Anne Boleyn (Uncovering the Tudors) Kindle Edition
‘A very readable account of all the strands in the complicated tapestry of politics, religion, and that very uncertain quality, the King’s love’ The Times
Few queens of England are as famous as Anne Boleyn.
Yet, who was this woman? What was her life like before Henry VIII became infatuated with her? And just how influential was she in reshaping English religious and political life during the early years of the Reformation?
Marie Louise Bruce’s engrossing account of Anne Boleyn charts the rise and fall of this remarkable young woman through the course of her short life, from her early days at Hever Castle to the luxurious courts of France and England to her terrifying last days in the Tower of London.
By utilising a wealth of primary sources, including the love letters between Henry and Anne along with innumerable documents written by courtiers and ambassadors, Bruce brings to life the splendour of the Tudor court and its most famous king and queen.
‘A fine biography. She perceptively traces the development of Anne Boleyn’s character from its formative years in the French court.’ The Times Literary Supplement
‘Traces sympathetically and in great detail the life of Henry VIII’s second queen. What a woman, and what a terrible time to be her kind of woman! Beautiful, clever, talkative and strong-willed, in this book Anne Boleyn lives and dies vividly, leaving behind the proud and inescapable fact that her daughter became England’s greatest queen’ She Magazine
‘A readable and balanced portrait.’ Kirkus Reviews
‘Invaluable as an insight into this complex period and it has the rather rare virtue of being a good read.’ The Teacher
‘Eminently readable… Marie Louise Bruce is admirably fair (and) makes good use of Henry’s letters to Anne during their courtship’ The Sunday Telegraph

- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2021Anne Boots is so frequently presented in film and literature as a charming if not quietly manic coquette who catches the eye of King Henry and changes England forever. Here, we may see more clearly the tragically flawed character of Anne's intelligence and ambition. Whilst she is frequently portrayed (initially at least) as the pawn of her family's unprincipled greed and power lust here she is an exceptionally beautiful and alluring young girl whose natural charms and flirtatious manner are both her greatest asset and her greatest source of sorrow. This Anne Boleyn is tragically unaware, or rather learns too late, that her fate is off her own making. Those aspects of her character which drew her to the King's attention ultimately spell her doom. True to all Tragedy, she also seems her tornado that truth although too late to alter her course. She is, on this point, made sympathetic yet we see that her fateful end is clearly other own devising. She is larger than life, and yet seemingly driven by a sense of insignificance. She appears driven by a certain mania; constantly struggling to anticipate and out maneuver her rivals when her chief enemy is frequently herself. The larger issues of European power play are also clearly presented as influences far greater and more complicated taking the break from Rome, for example, and other major shifts which Henry VIII put into place in this period as being not so entirely motivated by lust for Anne Boleyn as by the very real need to maintain the proper balance of power for the safety of the realm. This book is insightful for this well researched and clearly presented portrait not only of it's titular figure but for its success in setting this delicate jewel in the harsh setting of her evolving world.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2024A very good book. I really enjoyed reading it, I feel that Anne's sister Mary had the best Life and I'm glad, I always felt sorry for her.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2024This was a really good read. I’ve read so many books about Henry VIII and his six wives but none of them had a take on how the wives must have felt. I’m bored to tears with the Tudors but, from a new perspective I couldn’t put this down.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2023Riveting. Readers come to understand this brave and ambitious woman who persevered for six years to become Queen of England. She never provided Henry with the male heir he sought, but through her and Henry's daughter, Elizabeth, became heir to a future queen of England.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2021This was an interesting take on Anne Boleyn. Her life has been written about, romanticized, and torn to shreds by those who wished to bring her down. Mary Louise Bruce brings Anne to the front again, and in some ways, rehashing all of the information that has already been presented about her.
I was looking forward to gaining deeper insight into Anne Boleyn through this book, but nothing truly jumped out as new and exciting. Nevertheless, it was a decent biographical work of this young woman who became the queen of England, losing her life at a young age.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2021If you are interested in the Tudors this is a must read. It is completely non-biased. Although in the epolog the author shares her opinion on Anne's guilt or innocence the book will make you look at things differently. I had always been a complete fan of Queen Anne, thought she had been completely railroaded (she was) and had done no wrong. This book opened my eyes to a few things. Definitely worth the read. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2021Having felt badly for Anne Boleyn since I was very short, the portions of this book in which she was portrayed as bewildered by the king’s attentions, I was especially drawn to. Henry was twice her age and of no use or interest to her marriage-wise. The way her male family members—besides her good brother—treated and misused her, is not only sad and unfortunate, but truly cruel and diabolical. With no one ever truly on Anne’s side, truly looking out for her best interests, no wonder this series of self-effacing and maniacally narcissistic individuals rode her all the way to the top, before systematically driving her straight into the ground.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2023It is historically realistic this could have occurred. In the end Ann’s daughter reigned and that is what she really wanted.

A thorough and shrewd look into the life of one so widely debated and pondered. The best book on Anne I have read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
One of the best history books I’ve ever read.
There is a depth of understanding rare in such books. Ann Boleyn is brought to life with sympathy, faults and all. Life at the top of the tree was dangerous, especially with the psychopath Henry VIII at the top.
Without Ann there’d be no Church of England.
I cannot recommend this book too highly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Condition disappointing
I haven't read the book yet but I was disappointed in the condition as the pages are very yellow so it wasn't in as good condition as I thought it would be.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Biography
Eric Ives originally credited this biography of Anne Boleyn by Marie Louise Bruce in the former version of his own biography of Anne. Considering that Ives is often cited as the major authority on Anne, that's high praise indeed.
This biography is detailed and enjoyable and although largely traditional in it's assessment is one of the best biographies of Anne Boleyn. Not only does set the scene beautifully bu she seems to make an effort to understand her subject so what we have is little a more rounded interpretation which is rare with Anne.
Overall, an excellent biography and worth reading or adding to your collection.
