Review
For me, the most important message that Eugenia Chu gives is one that transcends the daily news bites we receive through the media on a constant basis. We are often given a slanted view of other countries, often based on the political ties or conflicts that exist between nations. And unfortunately, often that is all people are able to process. On the other hand, this book provides a safe passageway to another country, filled with kind people who don't have strong political motivations that try to influence one against the other. The people are just people, plain and simple. Chu's ability to bring this to the reader is outstanding, and the positive characters she creates make Brandon Goes to Hong Kong - Xiānggǎng (香港) a shining star and clear winner for readers of all ages. Highly recommended."

About the Author
When Brandon was very little, the author couldn't find children's storybooks to read to him which touched upon Chinese culture and which included some Chinese (Mandarin) words to teach and/or reinforce his Chinese vocabulary, so she started writing her own.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2021My daughters and I enjoyed reading, “Brandon Goes to Hong Kong” together. The story has a great mix of imagination and learning all in one book! Brandon goes on a vacation with his parents and to his surprise, his grandparents join them on their trip. Brandon gets to meet is little cousin, Kelsey, for the first time and they discuss dragons and if they are real. Brandon keeps seeing glimpses of something red during his tour through Hong Kong, making him wonder if he is seeing things or if there really is something there like a real dragon. It's fun to follow along in the book with Brandon's adventures during his family vacation where he learns about different culture, religion, food, mythical creatures, and legends. He even gets to go to Disneyland where he is a nice big cousin and gets a picture with a princess to make his cousin happy. Brandon does his own research during his vacation to find out more about dragons. There are black and white pictures throughout the book and some pictures of various types of dragons. There are also Chinese words mixed throughout the book with a pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book. The glossary at the back of the book is helpful for some of the different Chinese words used in the book.
This book works great for a read aloud and would be great for kids to learn about other cultures. It can also inspire kids to do their own research to learn about the things they are interested in.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2021Another book in the charming and educational series of Brandon’s travels through China. In this adventure, Brandon and his family are visiting Hong Kong. He is surprised to find that his grandparents and cousin, Kelsey, will also be there.
The book brings readers on a series of adventures in which they visit Victoria Peak, a marine and wildlife park, Disneyland, and the Big Buddha. Brandon will have the opportunity to ride ferries, cable cars, and a glass-bottom boat. But what really fascinates him are the flashes of a red dragon he thinks he keeps seeing in the sky.
Brandon and his cousin set out to research all they can discover about dragons, but no one can seem to confirm whether they are real or mythical creatures. Brandon wants to believe they are real. A surprise visitor and a conversation with his grandfather finally give him the answer.
Children who read this beginning chapter book will enjoy the simple illustrations and the Chinese words inserted within the tale. There is a glossary for young readers who wish to try their hand at learning Chinese. I especially enjoyed the questions at the end of each chapter and the surprise ending. Highly recommended for elementary and middle-grade students, especially those interested in learning about Asian customs and culture.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2021The “Brandon” books series is a wonderful gift to children. They are fun, educational, imaginative and adventurous. “Brandon Goes to Hong Kong” is no exception. This is a chapter book for readers advanced past picture books. It’s 72 pages divided into 17 chapters. There are charming black and white illustrations sprinkled throughout. This book is fun because of the mystery Brandon has to solve. It’s fun because it’s not a Sherlock Holmes type of mystery, it just peeks in a bit, from time to time, and keeps the reader hooked, which makes it even more of a mystery. This book is educational, filled with cultural references of Hong Kong, and also teaches kids Chinese characters and pronunciations alongside the English text. There is also a very helpful Chinese/English glossary at the back of the book. This book is also filled with imagination and adventure, which makes me feel like a kid again. The type of book you can’t put down, and just read cover to cover. Do you believe in Dragons? I do.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2024Was it a dragon or not? That is the question! This author does an amazing job with keeping you at the edge of your seat after every chapter and asking you a question on if you thought it was a dragon or not. It makes you want to read more! I also loved her use of other languages in the book to introduce children and talking about some fun things to do while in Hong Kong! So much fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a clever book packed full of information alongside a fantastic story!
I love how this story includes so much opportunity for engagement and interaction as well as learning a second language almost incidentally along the way. So cleverly written with many fascinating things to learn about the local area too. Fact and fiction all rolled into one!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best children's books around!
Eugenia Chu is one of my new, favourite authors! Honestly, two books in and I'm digging everything she has to give us! Brandon Goes to Hong Kong is a delightful story that whisks the reader away to Brandon's fun, inviting world.
This book is longer than the first book (which was a short, picture book). We have a short, middle grade read just under one hundred pages. This is an excellent story for five year olds and up, and I can easily see an older age group appreciating this book too! There's more to unpack with this story, in all the best ways! There's also lovely illustrations too.
These are the amazing points that I love about this book:
1. There is an introduction to Mandarin Chinese and how the tones work. To me, this is super interesting! I love an educational book that is also fun. You don't have to learn how Mandarin Chinese works, but if you want to Eugenia Chu has video offerings on her website on how to pronounce the words and how to use tones.
2. This is a sweet book about family and fun! Brandon goes to Hong Kong (like the title suggests) and gets to experience exciting adventures with his family. You'll learn about a lot of major hot spots in Hong Kong when you read this book too. I definitely liked Googling some of the places he went to take me away during all the craziness of our current times.
3. There questions at the end of the chapters to prompt discussion. Whether you love story telling, or just want a more engaged audience - this book is selling it all and making it work!
4. There's a full glossary of words at the back! I love me some educational books. I also enjoyed learning how to pronounce these words (I'm not the best, but I'm learning and trying!).
5. There's also an introduction to Cantonese. It's a little less than Mandarin, but it's super cool! And an introduction to what buddhism actually is! That's a topic I've always wanted to learn a little more about, so it was mighty cool learning it from a book. It makes it kid friendly and simple, and it also doesn't go into anything too controversial. Just a basic understanding of what goes along with that word.
6. Dragons, kites, Komodo dragons, pandas and fantastical delights! What more can a young reader ask for?
Overall, I highly recommend this book. It's an excellent read for young and older audiences alike!
Five out of five stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Educational and fun
A beautifully written book with lots of cultural references to Hong Kong, including some Chinese characters. I loved the glossary at the back and the illustrations are great too.
