Fake Boyfriend Breakaways: A Short Story Collection Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,877 ratings

Breakaways is a collection of short stories from Eden Finley’s Fake Boyfriend universe. They all feature side characters from the series but do not contain fake boyfriend tropes.

Rebound (Fake Boyfriend 2.5)
Aron and Wyatt have been best friends since college and are both rebounding from bad break-ups. One night of drunken sex makes them question their whole friendship and what they’ve had right in front of them all along.
Best read after Trick Play in the Fake Boyfriend universe.

It’s Complicated (Fake Boyfriend 3.5)
Max has been in love with his childhood best friend, Ash, for years. The reason he has kept it a secret is because Ash also happens to be Max’s brother’s ex-boyfriend. Complicated doesn’t begin to explain their relationship.
Best read after Deke in the Fake Boyfriend universe.

Winning You (Fake Boyfriend 4.5)
(Previously published in Heart2Heart volume 2. This story has been extended from the original and re-edited.)
Marty and Luce win a blind date through a charity raffle. Marty is young and vibrant. Luce is older and a little bit bitter. In one night, they manage to change the course of each other’s lives.
This is a prequel of Hat Trick in the Fake Boyfriend universe.

    There are three short stories, each written in dual first person POV. None of them have the fake boyfriend trope, but that actually made more sense to me. Each had some fun sexy times (M/M) and a good amount of humor. I think that the author gave just enough backstory so that these could be read as standalone but I think you get more out of them if you’ve read the series first.

    The first story is Rebound and follows Aron and Wyatt, who are minor characters in book 2 (both are part of the friend circle). Fun story. No crazy angst.

    The second story is It’s Complicated and follows Ash (Ollie’s ex from book 2) and Max (Ollie’s brother). I almost skipped this one because I didn’t like Ash when I read Ollie’s book and this story didn’t completely help that feeling. It was still an interesting read but had more angst than story one but Max’s family makes up for it.

    The third story is Winning You and follows Marty and Luce, neither of whom we’ve met before but their story revolves around Jay and his band and apparently Jay is the subject of book 5. I really enjoyed this one and hope that book 5 contains more of Marty’s snark.

    Summary: A collection of three novellas about some of the side characters from the Fake Boyfriends books: Wyatt and Aron from Trick Play, Max and Ash from Deke, and Luce and Marty from Hat Trick.
    Review: I’m not always a fan of novellas and short stories—they often feel rushed or more telling than showing or like a good outline for a longer story, but these are really well done—especially “Winning You” about Luce and Marty. In all of the stories, the characters feel well rounded and complex, the pacing is just right, the dialogue is good, and the connections between the characters feels real and solid. While I enjoyed all of the characters, I adored Luce and Marty and their chemistry and banter. They were the couple I was most interested in from reading the main books too, so I guess it’s not a surprise that I’d like them best in their own stories too.

    If you’ve read and enjoyed the Fake Boyfriend series, I highly recommend this collection!

    Loved reading these since I already finished the Fake Boyfriend series. Luce/Marty was my favorite! Glad Wyatt and Aron got their HEA. Love Max still not a fan of Ash though

    I enjoyed Aaron and Wyatt, I believed their bond and appreciated getting to learn more about the connection to Rebecca and Skylar. I wasn’t fully invested though.
    Ash and Max were my favorite, not for their relationship, but because I enjoyed the writing most here. I laughed, smiled and appreciated spending more time with Ollie and Lennon. I actually was a little underwhelmed by Ash and Max and, after the way Max treated Lennon,I was kind of glad at the amount of anxiety Max felt over confronting them both (which probably sounds terrible, I know).
    Max was put into an awkward position when Ash and his brother broke up, but it seemed like there was more animosity aimed at Ollie and Lennon than Ash and his hook-ups. And then I just didn’t really care about the incident with the friend. I knew how things would end.
    Finally, Luce and Marty. I thought they were fun and enjoyed reading them together. It was also interesting getting a glimpse of Radioactive’s journey before the events of book 5. They, Luce and Marty felt a little unbelievable though. I don’t know if they needed more time or if they just didn’t gel with me.

    I’ll admit I didn’t care about Aron or Ash when I read the original Fake Boyfriend books, but these three short stories were excellent.
    The first two are friends-to-lovers featuring Aron (Noah’s ex) and Wyatt and then Ash (Ollie’s ex) and Max (Ollie’s brother).

    Aron and Wyatt are pretty low-angst, as they’ve been good friends for years who never crossed that line, even though they both considered it. I really rooted for these two, because they were likable and they seemed like a good fit.

    Ash and Max are more complicated- longtime best friends and business partners, Ash gave up years ago wishing his straight best friend Max would ever reciprocate his feelings. He dated Max’s brother Ollie for years, and while that relationship was real, he never really got over Max. And Max takes a lot of years to figure out his real feelings for Ash, but once he does it’s too late. So these two are a mess- secretly in love, scared to admit it, and facing the incredible awkwardness of having Ollie in the middle. This was a good story, and real to life in the complicated feelings between all three of them, but I don’t want complicated in a short story!! Wish this one was a little more clear cut...

    The final story was great- two guys meet through a charity concert giveaway and hit it off. This is a prequel of sorts for the final Fake Boyfriend book as the two characters wind up managing Jett/Jay’s band (Jett/Jay is the MC of the final book). This one got me excited for the final book!

    All three of these stories were nothing short of amazing. I cannot decide which couple I love more. Marty and Luce were completely unexpected but so so great. I cannot wait to see what happens with Jay.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Très chouette lecture !

    4.25/5
    Un très chouette recueil de 3 novella sur des personnages secondaires qu’on a eu plaisir à rencontrer dans la saga principale !
    J’ai eu une grosse préférence pour la dernière mais j’ai passé un super moment de lecture dans l’ensemble ! L’écriture d’Eden Finley est toujours aussi afflictive et efficace même dans un format court, c’est dingue ! Et j’aime encore plus quand elle fait des petites références à la pop-culture (Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Retour vers le futur…etc.) !!

    * Rebound : 4/5
    Une lecture très sympa qui va à l’essentiel (presque un peu expéditif!) avec une trope Friends to lovers assez prévisible quand on connaît la relation Aron/Wyatt. Et quel plaisir de retrouver Noah même fugacement, sa présence était plus que nécessaire pour clôturer l’arc d’Aron !

    * It’s complicated : 4/5
    Trop contente de lire l’histoire de ce couple, notamment après avoir pressenti dans le T3 de la saga principale que Max aimait Ash au-delà de l’amitié haha.
    J’ai adoré revoir Ollie et Lennon (mon couple préféré EVER) et également voir Jordan avant sa rencontre avec Blake d’Elevé (qui apparaît dans le T4 de la saga Famous) !!
    Dans l’ensemble cette novella était très chouette mais c’était un peu long aussi. La raison qui empêche Ash et Max d’être ensemble est certes valable mais j’ai trouvé que ça durait un peu trop longtemps étant donné qu’il suffisait de parler à Ollie, qui est plus qu’heureux avec Lennon et qui, bien qu’un peu réticent, n’allait sûrement pas les empêcher d’être ensemble…
    Mentions spéciales aussi pour le matching tattoo : j’aime bien la raison pour laquelle Ollie souhaite qu’Ash garde le sien! Et pour la famille Strömberg qui est juste tellement drôle et unique !!

    * Winning you : 4.5/5
    Clairement ma novella préférée des 3 !! J’avais peur que ce couple ne m’intéresse pas plus que ça et en fait j’ai ADORÉ leur histoire !! Leur rencontre, leur alchimie, l’évolution de leur relation après ce rendez-vous gagné et puis, revoir Jet et savoir comment tout a commencé entre lui et Luce : c’était TROP BIEN !!
