Breathe Again; A Riveting Serial Killer Thriller (DCI Jamie Carver Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 998 ratings

Young boys sometimes find older women 'interesting', They usually grow out of it. But what if the interest is mutual, and she's not what, or who, he thinks she is?

Newly arrived in Brackers Lake, Brandon Sawyer is missing Brooklyn, and hates everything about the sleepy upstate New York town his family have moved to. But when his father volunteers his services to help clear the yard for the nice lady who lives across the street, all thoughts of running off back to Brooklyn soon disappear.

Taken in hand by Kit, the town Sheriff’s daughter, Brandon learns that ‘sleepy’ Brackers Lake isn't so sleepy after all. The brutal but "completely weird" murder of a local councilman points to dark secrets lurking behind the town’s pretty lace curtains and picket fences. When Brandon and Kit discover that his new employer may be party to those secrets, it leads them towards danger of a sort they cannot begin to comprehend.

An ocean away, DCI Jamie Carver is staring at a photograph purporting to show that someone he thought was dead, may be alive and living somewhere in New York state. Uncertain if it is genuine or someone’s idea of a sick joke, he is rapidly coming to a stark conclusion. There's only one way to find out…

The sixth in the Jamie Carver Series, Breathe Again picks up where Death In Mind left off, with a method of killing that echoes one Carver has seen before - and the possibility that the horror he thought was all in the past, may not be.

"Perfect for fans of the likes of LJ Ross, Peter James, JD Kirk, and J M Dalgleish."

Born in Liverpool, England, Robert F Barker served thirty years as a police officer and detective, most of it working in and around some of Northwest UK's grittiest towns and cities. He writes stories that are dark and edgy, but credible enough for the reader to believe they may be based on some sort of reality, which of course they sometimes are. (Names changed to protect the innocent.. etc.). During his service, he learned that no matter where people live, whatever their position in society, they are never far from places where darkness dwells. Those places may be inner city sink estates where drugs are dealt and violence rules, or leafy suburbs where neat gardens and lace curtains conceal the sort of evil that no one ever imagines - until the worst happens.

As a former Senior Investigating Officer and Firearms Incident Commander, he knows all about the pressures police officers face, as well as what it means to have to make life-and-death decisions in the heat of live operations. Given his background, his stories are as authentic a portrayal of crime and policing as can be found anywhere in today's crime fiction.

He splits his writing-time between his family home in Cheshire, UK, and the beautiful island of Cyprus, where he gains inspiration for a series of Cyprus-based thrillers which he intends will compliment his crime novels.

This series has been very difficult to put down. From the 1st to this one, I was hooked. Kept me on the edge of my seat. Disappointed when I finished one because I wanted them to go on and on. This writer pulls you in and keeps you wanting more. Great series and I highly recommend it.

The detective Jamie Carver and his complicated relationship with killer Megan Crane continues to keep my attention. I enjoyed this book. However, I'm very disappointed in the lack of editing to correct basic grammatical errors and especially those obvious cultural faux pas made as pertaining to American conversational English, etc. I would have expected an author of Barker's quality to insist on correcting such. I'm very disappointed.

Jamie Carved heads to the U.S. when he is sent a picture and a note saying 'She is here.' The She is Megan , the serial killer that almost got Jamie several years ago.

The story continues in a wonderfully suspenseful novel. Megan or Miriam, is still as devious as ever! Jamie Carver is as clever as ever and the end appears to be a beginning.?

How anyone in Jamie Carver's circle can continue to support & admire him puzzles me. He neglects the woman he supposedly loves, lies to his partner, takes no responsibility for his son, can't control his emotions and is essentially an arrogant man that attempts to disguise it all under his desire to get the bad guys. CAN NOT BELIEVE how this one ended. Ridiculous. The author might want to employ an American editor if he brings his character back here. Here's just one error, but there are many. We drink lemonade not a glass of lemon.

This book meanders along, spending WAY too much time on stuff that doesn't matter. The ending is pretty predictable after you've read the first third of the book. Could have been 100 pages shorter, easily.

I found this story to be rather boring in a lot of places and far too long. I don't like the way Jamie behaved.

I read this series one after the other, I only wish there was another to follow. A suspenseful and at times inconvenient page-turner, as I couldn’t put it down (long sleepless nights), it didn’t disappoint…I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely gripping

Having read all the previous books in this series, I was really keen to buy this next one as I just wanted to find out what had happened to Jamie Carver after the death of the woman who had dominated his life for such a long time. Needless to say, I certainly was not disappointed as this one had all the excitement we have previously seen. However, this one was different in as much as it started out in a totally different country, with no sign of Carver and his team. Right from the outset we are transported to the USA and are introduced to the young lad, Brandon Sawyer, who has just moved into the Brackers Lake, New York area where his father takes him across the road to meet Miriam Crane, a totally captivating woman who he makes friends with immediately and starts clearing her garden for her. Naturally, nothing is as it seems and as the plot deepens it is filled with mystery and dilemmas. We gradually begin to see where it could be leading but have no idea of the full truth. Then DI Jamie Carver arrives in the USA following up an investigation into a local killing in the same Brackers Lake area, with just happens to have similarities to the dominatrix crimes that he has been working on back in the UK. It takes a while for the action to get really horrifying, but when it does, it is certainly gripping and breath-taking. The final chapters keep you turning the page into the night, right up to the end where we are left wanting and needing more. As I read the final lines, I was left with a feeling of dread that this could be the end of Jamie, something which I would hate to happen. This beautifully crafted novel is certainly well worth a read and will stay with you for a long time to come.

Barker outdoes himself with this thriller. A totally different and unexpected viewpoint by two teens and her Sheriff father adds a brilliant perspective to Carver’s ongoing quest. This one really leaves you hanging …. unable to wait for the next instalment.

Read the entire series … you will not regret it.

I have just finished reading the latest novel Breathe Again in the Jamie Carver series by this outstanding author of crime novels.
It is an absolute page-turner from the first page to the last word on the last page.
I loved the voice of the young man Brandon recalling what happened to him in his life as a young teenager who had just moved into a new district in upstate New York, USA
The plot is great! I could not stop reading the pages with all the twists and turns as the plot unfolds. Unstoppable and unshakable the plot is brilliant, as expected of this author’s work. I can’t wait for the next book to be published!
