The Bridge of Sand: Celtic fury challenges the might of Roman steel... Kindle Edition

3.1 3.1 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

A thrilling adventure story set in Ancient Britain! Perfect for fans of Morgan Llywelyn, Bernard Cornwell, Matthew Harffy and Simon Scarrow.

Britain, 80AD

The Island stands as one of the farthest outposts of the Roman Empire – a misty, mysterious land of wild weather and sudden death.

Juvenal, poet and regimental commander, is ordered to conquer the Island. With a small column of men, he must fight his way through the swampy, hostile countryside to the legendary Bridge of Sand that leads to the Island and her bounty of wheat.

The column strikes out into an uncharted, mystical wilderness – a land of Gods and Goddesses, of illusion and superstition – to find that Rome’s seemingly invincible might is threatened by Druidic magic...

Will the Romans survive their quest? Will they reach the mysterious rumoured Bridge of Sand?

And can Juvenal appease the Gods and conquer the Island for Rome?

Written with sharp wit and undeviating irony THE BRIDGE OF SAND is an Ancient History novel following a band of Roman soldiers on a military campaign.

‘A distinguished novel ... a striking and clever story — imaginative, exciting and sinister’ – Sunday Express

I was really interested in the poet-officer, how plainly he saw the greed & ugliness of his general.
The mission to find the “land of wheat” & the Bridge of Sand was fascinating, how the native Britons strove to end the Roman soldiers using strategy & superstition.
But, the ending of the poet-officer, relegated to demotion, being cast as dereliction of duty, was depressing.
If I had known it would be so unsatisfactory, I wouldn’t have read it, it was futile.

Another of John Jame's enjoyable historical novels. If you have never read any of his books, then start now! Recommended.

Many years ago I bought 3 books by this author and liked the quirky humour in them. This book is rather humourless and I am not sure I shall finish it or even keep it.
