Broadland: A chilling Norfolk Broads crime thriller (DI Tanner Norfolk Broads Murder Mystery Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 14,612 ratings

A CHILLING NORFOLK BROADS CRIME THRILLER!
"I bloody loved the book.
Wow! Loved the twists and turns!" Ali Dunn

A girl’s body found mutilated by a boat’s propeller, another dumped at the bottom of a slipway, and a disused Norfolk mill, hiding the secret to both.

A COLD DENSE shadow fell over Jane Richardson as she hurried along the concrete towpath. To her left, moonlight danced over the River Bure’s untroubled surface as it slipped silently past, heading back the way she’d come. A low-hanging branch scratched at her face as she ducked underneath. From somewhere far behind her came the shriek of laughter, slicing through the air, only to fall silent a moment later to leave nothing but the sound of her high heels, click-clacking out a stark but steady beat.

When a girl’s body is found strangled, raped, and horrifically mutilated by a boat’s propeller, deep in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, newly arrived Detective Inspector John Tanner is asked to assist with the investigation. At first, all the evidence points to a man who had a multi-million pound reason to kill her. But when an alibi is produced from an unexpected source, and another body appears at the base of a slipway, Tanner finds himself turning to local girl, Detective Constable Jenny Evans for help. As a more romantic relationship develops between them, they find themselves facing a race against time to identify a lethal adversary, one with a lust for blood and a mind set on revenge.

Set within the mysterious beauty of the Norfolk Broads, this fast-paced British detective series is a dark cozy murder mystery with a slice of humour and a touch of romance that will have you guessing until the very end, when the last shocking twist is finally revealed.

Broadland is a totally addictive gripping crime thriller, the first in a chilling series of serial killer books, ones which will rapidly convert followers of L J Ross, Faith Martin, Joy Ellis, Damien Boyd, J M Dalgliesh, and Elly Griffiths into David Blake devotees.

Enjoyed plot and character development. Like sense of humor shared between DI and DC. Two plot items bothered me. 1-why was DI getting the suspect’s Susan ‘s address by calling into station when a big point was made that DI and DC went back to get a more inclusive employee list which included her phone and address-so they already had her address in their listing. 2-why make a big deal that the suspect Susan fell 10 feet through the floor of wind mill and disappeared when this point was left hanging, weak plot development when there was no follow up except as Epilogue comment about Susan picked up next day by police sneaking into her flat.

After reading St. Benet's , I read Broadland, and am absolutely hooked . The main two characters are likable and believable, and I am looking forward to learning about their developing relationship . While the storyline can get dark at times, there is a lot of humor as well, which is a great balance. This book has it all..(for those of us who enjoy this kind of thing!) ...an interesting British police procedural with well developed and likable characters, lovely descriptions of the surrounding areas, and a believable story!

The storyline was solid. I felt that the dialog between Tanner and Jenny was very out of place and did not suit the situation at all. Medical observances were in error. The pupils dialate with death not constrict. When they find Richardson's body, Tanner says talk to the neighbors even though the press has been staked out at the home and the perp was to have come in the front door.
Will read another to see if they get any bette.r

I wasn't sure I was going to like this book when I began, but the characters drew me in. One error (the ME told the detectives that one victim was 35 weeks pregnant, then in another place the author says they couldn't tell if the victim had been disemboweled because her abdomen was damaged by a boat propeller). But the dialogue is great, very realistic, behavior of individuals natural and believable, great plot and great plot development. Interesting manner of writing. I'm definitely buying the next book in the series.

UNTIL I VISITED THE NORFOLK BROADS I HAD NEVER HEARD OF THE AUTHOR DAVID BLAKE. IN THE DEPARTMENT STORE IN WROXHAM THERE WERE MANY OF HIS BOOKS FOR SALE CLEARLY BECAUSE THE STORIES WERE ABOUT A POLICE INSPECTOR NEWLY APPOINTED TO THE AREA. ON MY RETURN HOME I HAD A BIT OF SPARE TIME AND DECIDED TO READ THE FIRST BOOK (ON KINDLE). TO MY SURPRISE I FINISHED IT WITHIN 2 DAYS. NOTHING OVER SPECIAL IN THE STYLE OF STORYTELLING, SIMPLE TO READ, SHORT CHAPTERS, SOME CHARACTERS A LITTLE UNBELIEVABLE BUT AN EASY READ NOT TAXING ON THE BRAIN, TOTAL ESCAPISM. OF INTEREST TO A FIRST TIME VISITOR TO THE BROADS WERE THE PLACE NAMES IN THE BOOK AND THIS HELPED AS I WAS ABLE TO PICTURE THE SETTING OF MUCH OF THE FICTIONAL ACTION. ALTOGETHER AN ENJOYABLE READ. HAVE ORDERED THE SECOND BOOK IN THE SERIES IN CASE I HAVE A COUPLE OF DAYS GOING SPARE.
