Buku: Sun and Shadows: (BUKU Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 67 ratings

This darkness is deep enough to drown in.
Iris lives in a broken world. Still, her village high in the Rockies has found a way to survive. And they finally have a weapon against the test-tube beasts that brought about the apocalypse.

But Oso and Micah, the men who helped usher in the newfound hope, are now in danger. Iris urges her reluctant hunting squad to brave the buku and travel across the mountains to a new community, a place steeped in shadows and a hidden malignancy. There she finds allies and enemies and a fear that threatens to bury her.

Everyone she loves is entombed in a mountain, and none of them may survive.

Buku: Sun and Shadows is the second book in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian trilogy with elements of faith. While it is a stand-alone story, you’ll want to read Buku first. You might also check out Buku: Micah’s Story, a novella where the characters of Sun and Shadows are introduced.

Jennifer Anderson hails from Illinois -- the opposite end of the state from Chicago. There, among the corn fields and coal mines, she grew up exploring new worlds through books, while dreaming of creating her own worlds. With a degree in advertising from the University of Illinois, Jennifer became a copywriter, working mostly in broadcasting. She eventually landed at famed WSM Radio in Nashville, Tennessee. From there, she moved on to write and produce the syndicated radio program “The Crook and Chase Countdown” before deciding to pursue her childhood dream of writing fiction. BUKU is her first novel. Jennifer lives in the Nashville area with her husband Mike, where she snuggles cats, neglects housework, and heads up a mission project that encourages creativity among at-risk children. I eagerly bought this book as soon as it was available, having enjoyed the first novel so much. But I just got the chance to read it during Holiday Break - the all-consuming life of teaching during COVID interfered with my plans. Jennifer does such a beautiful job with words. She describes characters, feelings, landscapes, and EVERYTHING with such wonderful vision and detail. The plot of this book is so imaginative - it is so much more than a sequel. Thank you for, once again, taking us on the journey. I hope there are many more to come :)

Here's a sequel that just might be better than the original story. There are more twists and turns than you'll find on a mountain back-road in Colorado. It runs the gamut from occasional tender moments to some out and out warfare, and even a sort of "make my day" event. The ending wasn't what I'd imagined...a good thing, because it was better than my expectations. If you like thrilling science-fiction that's on the cusp of being believable, you will love "Buku, Sun and Shadows".

I very much hope this isn't the last book in the Buku series, because I've grown rather fond of the characters, their plight and the world thats been crafted within these pages. I want to follow them on more adventures, see them thrive and make a safe space for themselves and their loved ones.

Very good series overall, and I can't wait for more.

Book 2 did not disappoint. Characters are so effortlessly developed. This book is so well written it was like I was watching the movie in my head as I was reading the book. The worst part was that I read it within 24 hours of receiving it and now have to wait for Jennifer Anderson to publish book 3! Hurry, but take your time, Jennifer. ♥️🦏☀️👤

The second book in the series did not disappoint! I was glued to the first book until every last page was read. And I can honestly say I felt the same way for Buku: Sun and Shadows! The characters are well developed and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for them in the next book!

Keeps up the fast paced action and exciting conclusion to the series. Just had to get Micah's story go get a little more, and this series definitely needs one more book.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent follow on to the original.

What I really like is reading a story and thinking ‘I want more of this style of writing’.
Buku - does this in spades. The first book was about the creatures that made these people who they are - filled with love and foilibles and everything that makes us human.
This book is about these people wanting to be better and the hurdles they face trying to do this. Every character here is relatable and realistic to a point where you can’t help but see where they are ‘coming from’ even if you cannot agree with their actions. This book is actually about human frailty and where it can lead the individuals involved - for better or worse.
So ‘Sun and Shadows’ is my kind of read and, in a time when dystopian themes are ‘done to death’ is a fresh look times when the mixture of people people and insular self serving people have to sort out their collective differences- but for how long.

The characters are still strong, sympathetic and realistic. The action shifts so we get to see a little more of how the world has fared and the culture that has grown among other groups of survivors. You can see the action happening and the whole scenario feels very believable. I'm really looking forward to further releases in this series.
