The fourth book in the ever popular 'nostalgedy' series of books. However, you don't need to start at Book 1 and work through to Book 4, or even start at Chapter 1 etc., you can dip in and out at will, and it will all make sense.

Yet another collection of tales from yesterday and today, designed to bring a smile to your lips (although I can't think of anywhere else you would want a smile) and a warm glow of recollection…wherever you fancy having a warm glow, I suppose.

Here you will find a whole bunch of 'nostalgedy' stories. For those of you new to the concept of 'nostlagedy', it's a word I've coined to describe nostalgic articles where the accent is on comedy. I thought about 'comalgia' but I decided it sounded like something you would need to rub with liniment.

They say that strategy is something that is only obvious in hindsight (I don't know who this 'they' is, but they seem to say a lot of things) but it is certainly true of this compilation. I was casting about for an overall theme for the stories when I realised that, one way or the other, the majority are about transport. Of course, I've now decided that this was my intention all along!

Armed with an overarching theme, the structure for the book just had to be after the style of the old Highway Code, which I remember poring over, first for my Cycling Proficiency Test and later for my Driving Test (and have never looked at it again since). Do you remember the old Highway Code? It used to have separate sections for the different road users, such as The Road User On Foot, The Road User On Two Wheels and so on. Well, if it was good enough for the Highway Code, it's definitely good enough for me. Hence this compilation is split into sections covering The Author on the Road, The Author on Rails, The Author at Sea and, finally, The Author at Large, which is a catch-all description of everything that I couldn't shoe-horn into the other three sections.

In these sections you will experience, amongst other things; the dubious delights of flat, warm beer at 08.30 in the morning as you set off by train for Blackpool, the horrifying sight of three less than agile people crossing the M5 on foot, the three-year slog of endeavouring to learn to drive and the trials of trying to find a working cash machine in Malaga in the wee small hours. All of these stories, and many more besides, are yours for the reading.

Philip is a retired university lecturer in Human Resource Management. You wouldn't believe how many potential friends he has lost, over the years, by telling them that.

He has now turned 60, which is marginally better than not turning 60 in his opinion, but not much. He has also occasionally been accused of humour. If you can forgive him these facts, then you might just enjoy his writing.

He lives on the edge of the Derbyshire Peak District, because that is as far as they will let him in. He was born and brought up, in Burton upon Trent, the home of the UK brewing industry, and spent many of his early years attempting to support that industry single-handedly. Much of his writing over the past few years, for the Derby Telegraph, Burton Mail's "times gone by" magazine and Mature Times has featured his recollections of growing up (allegedly) in the 1950s and 1960s. He's christened his combination of nostalgia and comedy 'nostalgedy', he did consider 'comalgia' but he thought it sounded too much like an unfortunate medical condition.

"Steady Past Your Granny's" was Philip's first, self-published, collection of stories, available in Kindle and Paperback formats. The bumper sequel, "Crutches for Ducks" was published on Kindle on 1st November, 2011, and the third collection of 'nostalgedy' stories, "A Kick at the Pantry Door" burst onto the scene on 1st July, 2013. Number 4 in the series, 'Giving a Bull Strawberries was published in March, 2015 and boasts of being the only book to have a 30 foot shovel on the cover! Finally, the fifth and latest book in the 'nostalgedy' series 'The Things You See...' is the first in the series to be available both as an e-book and now in paperback. There is also a Christmas Special containing a mix of 'nostalgedy' and humorous fiction guaranteed to get you into the festive spirit at any time of the year 'A Christmas Cracker'.

    Bravo! Once again Philip Whiteland flexes his wit and comes out on top. If you're ever looking for a little something to bring a smile to your face, any, and all of Whiteland's collections of "nostalgedy" will fill the bill. He always manages to find the humorous side within life's many pages. After reading this, should I ever find myself taking a cruise, I will be better prepared.

    This is the first of the nostalgedy collection I have read - and it was good. Probably not the kind of book that you would sit down and devour feverishly in one sitting, but one that you would pick up and fall into, comfortably, chapter by chapter, having a wee quiet chuckle as you did so. Charming.

    This is the fourth book by this author that I have read and I think it is the best. It was enjoyable to hear all the stories about the different cruises he went on and the funny situations Philip and his wife found themselves in. It was also very nice to see all the photographs included in the book.
    There was also funny stories about rail travel, and coach travel, one horrifying story that I could not believe people would do, is crossing a motorway on foot to get to their coach the on the other side (one of the party was in a wheelchair) they crossed safely. Unlikely that this could be done in today's traffic.
    The title of the book "Giving A Bull Strawberries" I know that saying as "Giving A Donkey Strawberries" an interesting twist in different parts of the country. This is a lovely book.
