Maude Caulkin finds out the hard way that if you're poor and female in Victorian London, you are powerless.
After continued beatings from her stepfather, she tries to escape his fists, working for a pittance, and starvation. But, she soon finds herself facing even worse. Hired by Ned Hicklin, a prolific photographer and publisher of dirty books, he introduces her to one of his customers: the sadistic Charles Courtney-Duff.
After a devastating encounter with him, she turns the tables, and Courtney-Duff finds himself in her power. Maude has learned a lot from the freak shows she loves to frequent. But sometimes, you can go too far…

About the authors
C S Alleyne grew up in Australia and originally trained as a hotel manager in the UK. After several postings in the Caribbean she changed tack and completed her MBA followed several years later by a PhD in Information Systems. She is a management consultant and also lectures in several universities.
With a lifelong love of reading, anything historical and a fascination with the supernatural and death, her vacations usually include visits to such places as the Pere La Chaise cemetery and the catacombs in Paris, the tombs in Egypt, the Popes’ crypts in the Vatican and any church yard with gravestones – you get the picture…
Cheryl was inspired to write Belle Vue by her daily journey past a block of luxury apartments that had been converted from an old asylum. Like her protagonist, Alex Palmer, she started to investigate its past and learnt that one of the inmates was murdered there in the late 19th century. The victim’s sister was hung for the crime. Cheryl was also thrilled to discover the asylum’s overgrown cemetery in her explorations of the area!
Her novelette, POWEЯ, a tale of horror and revenge, was published in December, 2019 and BELLE VUE, a paranormal horror, on 25 August 2020 by Crystal Lake Publishing.
She is currently working on the follow up to BELLE VUE.
She is represented by Gandolfo Helin & Fountain Literary Management.
Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.
Welcome to Crystal Lake Publishing—Tales from the Darkest Depths.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2022POWER by C.S. Alleyne centers on a young woman trying to improve her station in life without prostituting herself. Unfortunately, one customer refuses to acknowledge the no-touching policy after she models for some photographs. Maude decides then and there to take revenge for herself and all the other girls who have been victimized.
This short is full of brutal scenes, including rape and torture, so consider this a content warning. However, the author is careful not to go into detail about the violations against Maude and the other girls, but rather focuses on the fallout, after she makes the monster her prisoner.
This definitely qualifies as body horror, and I don't recommend this to anyone with a weak stomach or casual tourists of the genre. However, if extreme horror is your thing, you're going to love the ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2020Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Revenge is a dish best served cold. Where there is a will there is a way. There are plenty of adages that you could apply to Power, but none of them adequately capture what C.S. Alleyne has captured here.
Maude Caulkin is a poor woman, of poor circumstances, trapped in poor relationship. She is the subject of abuse from her step-father, the pornographer she works for, and his monstrous client, but at no point in this story can you call her a victim. She is a woman of vision and purpose, suffering temporary indignities while she seizes an opportunity and create something bigger, something better for herself.
Make no mistake, she has a darkness within her, a fascination with the morbid curiosities of broken human beings, and that darkness is what gives her the Power to end the cycle of abuse and turn it back on her abusers. She does horrible, violent things in the name of justice . . . but she does so with love in her heart, under the veneer of medical education and scientific discovery.
Without giving away the how and the why, the way Alleyne brings together all of the story’s themes in the bloody twist is both grossly brilliant and darkly inspiring.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2019Growing up with her family getting poorer by the year, when her mother died, Maude did piece work to support herself and her abusive stepfather.
Maudeʼs life is sympathic to the point of hypnotizing the reader. Maudeʼs actions are completely reasonable.
This short story ends and the readerʼs hypnosis is broken.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2020Gory!!! Short and bloody. It begins with sewing and a beating and ends with sewing and more. You'll be grossed out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Museum Freaks and Power
You’re nothing but a gutter trollop as common as they come. I’ve paid for you and, if you please me, I’ll come back for more on my return.
Those words, spoken by a vile, abusive man, who visits a photographer and his women, are aimed at young Maude.
After her mama dies, and her step-father sends her to Hicklin to pose for his photos in various outfits, Maude takes advantage of the position by learning photography and doing Hicklin's books.
She wants more for her life, including marriage to handsome surgeon Arthur Munk. Fascinated by the Victorian freak shows, she wants to learn more about the human body.
Arthur, teaching her dark skills, gives her back some of her power.
Initially channelling Dickens and the archetype of the fallen woman, it soon switched gear into gruesome body horror and a sort of morality tale against female abuse.
Well written and very grim.
