About the Author

Donald Wells is a YEAR ZERO PUBLISHING author. I'm a New Jersey native and still make my home there. A voracious reader since childhood, I began writing about twenty-five years ago and now I can't imagine doing anything else. I've had more jobs than I care to remember, but Insurance Salesman, Real Estate Sales, Retail Management and Truck Driving were some of the highlights, and oh yeah, I was once offered a job as a bodyguard for a drug dealer who I ran into while he was walking home from prison. (I turned him down by the way.) To my readers I say, thank you. I love writing as much as I love reading and I only hope I'm writing books that others can love. The first 6 stories were a fun read. The stories and the characters were tongue in cheek but I thought the plots and characters were well developed with the common theme of the Caliber family running through them. The flashbacks to the 1880's Texas were handled well and were integrated into the modern day story line. Each story (Case File) was an easy read and all fit together well. I probably would not have enjoyed each story by itself but as a boxed set, the stories are a good value. I particularly liked not finding spelling and grammar errors. And the paragraph formatting with proper spacing and short paragraphs made reading these stories easier.

To write, and say briefly what you have to say, is unusual. Caliber Detective Agency is about a young boy found by a German settler in a covered wagon. He had a huge gun in his hand. They tried to calm him down and he surrendered the gun but kept repeating the number 11. Three Indian braves come charging toward the family and the boy quickly took the gun back and shot all three straight between the eyes. Then the boy started saying 14. They did not speak very good English so they saw Caliber on his gun and asked him his name and decided it was Caliber. Jacob Caliber became a legend in the west. His son moved the not very profitable detective agency to New York and Jacob Caliber the Third became a living legend by saving the President's life. His son was married and had two sons of his own, but died an early death. His wife built the nationwide detective agency and left the old man to handle the dangerous cases (Red cases). Her son was an exact copy of his grandfather and his younger brother was sent to law school. After visiting his grandfather and brother, he hurried to meet his mom in a coffee shop nearby before his law firm interview. The coffee shop was robbed and the cook killed. One of the customers was in television news and used his camera to capture everything and Christopher Jacob saved his mom by picking up the cook's gun and drilling 3 holes in the center of the robber's foreheads including the one who held a gun to his Mom's head. Chris had never used a gun in his life.

These are short stories that tie in from the first Jake Caliber, whose real last name was Steel, to the present Jake 3 and 5. The stories are short, but they convey a complete and unhurried book without all the fake ups and downs. They handle the cases that baffle other people. Jake 3 has been shot over 30 times and survived a car bomb. He is a living legend and the Sam Spade kind of detective. They also tie into Well's other series "Blue Steel" related to the Calibers and whose father was one of a long line of Texas Rangers. Blue works as a bounty hunter and the "Taken" series about a serial killer who fell in love with his victim and married her instead. He protects her and helps her with her criminal profiling. They get into the minds of these killers and take care of the ones the law cannot touch.

As someone who has read all seven Taken! books, I was looking for more from the same author and came across this series. Wow! While this series doesn't have the whiz bang action that the Taken! series does, it still grabs you and won't let go. In fact, Caliber is actually two series in one, because they all start out focusing on the first Jake Caliber in the old west and then show us what's going on in the present in New York City. It's a cool idea, and I wonder as the series keeps going, will we get to see the old man as a young P.I. in the fifties, I hope so.

If you've ever wondered what Mike Hammer would be like as an old man, this is the series for you. A great read.

What a wonderful and entertaining story this is.,when you.start.reading you find yourself falling down the.rabbits hole. The writer gives us a story that makes you imagine this happening in the 40's or 50's or the modern day version. The plot is good as well as the character development. If you want a new book then grab this one, interested in a new series then grab hold of the Calibers!

Okay I'm a fan, but how can I not be after the Tanners Series that you are taking a break from writing. I can't wait to read all of this series because it has a spell binding grip on suspense, drama, justice and plenty of action. If you are looking for a read that checks all those boxes then give this one a try and hold on to your seat.

I found these stories to be written in a somewhat light-hearted manner, with interesting characters and inter-relationships. You don't hang on to the edge of your seat with these but more go-with-the flow. If you enjoy these, there are more by the same author to enjoy. They almost remind me of the old-time radio detective stories (available online for download, for some unusual fun) where you can read or listen and you don't need to dwell on them to get in some good reading.
