Call Me Ana: A Love Story (The Legrand Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 426 ratings

Illiterate runaway Ana Marie hides her true identity from everyone around her to preserve the stable life she’s built. She pieces together a home for herself, but life begins to pass her by one mundane day after another. She’s never been in love. She’s never even felt the excitement of a heart-aching crush. That all changes when a handsome man from out of town shows up at her work. The chemistry between them is unmistakable. There’s just one problem: he doesn’t know who she really is, and if he finds out, it could shatter her world and put him in danger. How will she keep her new love, and keep him safe? Caution: This book contains violence and is not meant for young readers.
Interview with the Author:

Why did you write Call Me Ana: A Love Story?

I didn’t intend to write a romance as I wasn’t a huge fan of the genre at the time (I have since seen the light). But the characters, especially the main character Ana Marie, were so vivid and real to me that I couldn’t possibly ignore them. The story evolved as I spent countless hours day dreaming and I soon felt a pull to write it all down. I had probably been taking myself seriously as a writer for a year or two at that point, but Call Me Ana is the story that truly made me a writer. I rewrote scenes to happen several different ways, and even if I didn’t have a place in the story for a scene, but couldn’t get it out of my head, I still wrote it. This method produced a huge amount of words, but I didn’t find any of it a waste of time. To this day, I still enjoy going back and reading some of the extra scenes that didn’t make the cut. The decision to publish came in an epiphany when I realized if I didn’t put it out there in the world, the characters would die with me. This thought overcame any of the shyness I felt at putting such a personal story out there. And so here I am, still chipping away at finishing the series and slowly polishing it up to get it ready for publication.

What genre is Call Me Ana?

While it is a love story, Call Me Ana doesn’t seem to fit neatly into any romance subgenre. It has some thriller aspects to it as I wanted to write a suspenseful piece to drive the story forward. It is contemporary as it falls in modern times, although the first book could be classed as new age since it begins when Ana and Grant are young adults. There is some tragedy that Ana Marie must overcome, but ultimately, one of my goals was to write a compelling (and steamy) romance between two good, sweet characters. They both have their wild streaks, which will come out as the series progresses, but Grant, Ana’s love interest, is not a 'bad boy' in the sense that their relationship never walks a line of abuse.

What other books are like Call Me Ana?

Call Me Ana fits in with other books where a character overcomes a traumatic, painful past laced with abuse and comes out stronger for it.

I spend about 80% of all my consciousness day dreaming stories, particularly in The Legrand Series universe. My day job is being a stay at home mom to my young children (well day, night, holidays, weekends, and then some), and by night I am a writer/editor. Whenever I need some stress relief, besides reading, I turn to crocheting, chocolate, music, and tequila. Not necessarily in that order.

I, absolutely, loved this book. It is an emotional story about Ana who has left her home in New York and moved to this small town in Georgia.
Ana, who calls herself Rachel, is an illiterate waitress who lives a hard life on her own with little money and few friends.

Then one day Grant walks into her restaurant and manages to change Rachel’s life. He is attracted to Rachel and begins to ask her out. There is lots of clean romance, but there is also a lot of angst.

I found this story so absorbing that I never wanted to put the book down. The author uses first person, which added to my enjoyment. I was able to completely understand what Rachel was feeling and thinking because, like her, I had no idea what Grant was thinking or feeling.

Both Grant and Rachel are very complex and well-developed characters. The plot is also complex and filled with lots of problems and difficulties. I fell in love with Grant because he is so gentle and caring, plus he bases his feelings on people by their character traits and personalities and ignores their status, wealth and other things like that

Unfortunately, this book is not a stand-alone book because it does not have an ending. However, I am happy to say that book two, Call Me Yours, is already available.

    I highly recommend this book.

The writing and storyline were very good. True to life for some in this world, which is heartbreaking. I cannot comprehend living such a devastating, unfulfilled life. I did enjoy that Rachel/Ana was strong in character, and made a beautiful place to live her life, that she enjoyed helping those around her. And Grant was so gentle and patient. A great hero for the story.

I like to escape when reading, but was unable to do so with this story. For me, It was mostly a sad, depressing read. BUT...I couldn't put it down. So 4 stars. BUT because it ended as a cliff hanger, if you want to get any kind a happy ending whether for now or forever, I took 1/2 star away. I don't want to leave this story hanging, so I'm sure I'll read the rest through Kindle Unlimited.

Call Me Ana is a romance story with a character trying to overcome a painful past. Ana Marie or Rachel as she’s now known, escaped a troubled life for a fresh start in a new town. She’s got a nice job and loves the people in the town. One day, a handsome stranger named Grant comes into the restaurant where she works. An attraction brews between the couple, yet as they continue to grow in their relationship, Ana’s past threatens to destroy her happiness.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. Stories where you have the characters escaping a troubled life and starting a new one, are the types I love to read. Out of all the types of stories I've read, Call Me Ana is in the top ten with these books.

Ana is one of those characters you’re intrigued by. Reading about her tough life, you want her to find the happiness she deserves. The author does a wonderful job of showing the emotional turmoil of Ana’s life. As a reader, I could feel the pain Ana went through. There were a couple of scenes where I cried for Ana. Even though it’s an emotionally-driven story, the author does lighten the mood. My favorite scenes consisted of the diner crowd and Ana's banter with Pam, the diner's owner.

Scarlet Bonnet is a new author to me, and after reading Call Me Ana, I'm intrigued to read what other stories this talented author has up her sleeve.

I first read this book back in 2017 and liked it enough then to keep it because I was waiting for book 3 to come out. I waited years for that book and am about to finally read it after rereading books 1 and 2. Now that I just re-read this book I don't know what I found so special about it. Obviously this book ends in a cliffhanger. Had I just read this book for the first time I wouldn't have continued on with the series. I don't really remember book 2 (except the ending. That's what made me impatiently wait for the 3rd book) but I'm hoping it's better than book 1.

This love story is deeply real. And yet I've still escaped into a life vastly more interesting than my own, with a concentration on Ana's whole life, not just her love life. Scarlet Bonnet gets people's inner workings, where certain emotions hit me to the core. I remember working as a waitress, remember those small town nuances of aid and delight in misery and drama, the need to be a part of and yet separate. It just hits the gut harder. I would run away with my little runaway Ana anytime I wanted a sincere experience, get back to the important little things. She has such heart and strength and yet not your superheroine that no one can possibly imitate. So many secrets and small town intracies get wrapped up into her life until she can't sustain them all, not when there's this man making her feel more deeply than ever before, a man that can only spur on jealousy from those in her town. The chapters created a slow addiction for me which were oddly satisfied but the dramatic ending. But that addiction lives on for the next book in the series!

This is one of those stories that pulls you in from the beginning. The characters are well-developed and nothing is over done. It has some dark themes which lead to a confronting climax, but this is what made it a page-turner for me.

A sweet story with a dark underbelly that will leave you wanting more.

I fell in love with this story, I have actually reread this series quite a few times. I found Rachel (Ana) to be a very relatable character and I enjoyed watching her and Grant's love story unfold through her perspective. Be warned there may be some triggers for readers in this short read, Rachel/Ana has gone through a lot in her young life. You will fall in love with Grant the Southern Cowboy/Special Ops knight in shining armour. Please be warned this does end on a bit of cliffhanger, once you finish you'll be dashing to click "purchase" on Book 2, Call Me Yours.

I’m really not sure what I was expecting from this book based on the cover and the blurb, but it certainly wasn’t what I got!

The novel is a compelling mix of thriller and first love, in a setting that is small-town America at its worst and where everyone knows everyone else’s business.

Throughout the story Ms Bonet carefully and cleverly hides the secret of Ana/Rachel’s past, and I got to the last page still not much more enlightened. The suspense drove me mad, and if the author doesn’t hurry up with the promised sequel I might just sulk for weeks.

Ana is an intriguing soul – older than her years in some ways, much younger in others; a virgin when it comes to love, but not when it comes to sex. For some reason the book reminded me of Twilight (minus the vampires and the werewolves) with the MCs courage and determination, and her voice.

Not for the faint hearted, the violent scenes are possibly more graphic than the love ones, and both are well executed in their different ways. The characters are no mere pen portraits but are fully fleshed out and complex, though I would like to see a little more depth to Grant (which I suspect may come in the sequel). Even the villain is a complex blend of psychotic and neurotic, topped with a dash of self-realisation.

I sometimes have to skim read the first book when the second comes out, just to refresh my memory; I have a feeling I won’t need to in this instance, and this novel will stay with me for a good long time.
