4.3 out of 5 stars 624 ratings

King Arthur is destined to return, and Tom is destined to wake him.

When sixteen year old Tom’s grandfather mysteriously disappears, Tom stops at nothing to find him, even when that means crossing to a mysterious and unknown world.

When he gets there, Tom discovers that everything he thought he knew about himself and his life was wrong. Vivian, the Lady of the Lake, has been watching over him and manipulating his life since his birth. And now she needs his help.

Danger threatens the old forest of Vivian’s world. To save it, Tom must wake King Arthur, who’s been sleeping for centuries. But first, he’s determined to find his grandfather.

Tom starts a journey that will change his life forever. He discovers that fey and magic still exist, and myths are very real.

If he wants to survive, he must learn to fight, and find courage he never knew he had.

If you love magic, mystery, and Arthurian legend, you’ll love Call of the King, book 1 of Rise of the King.

The old legends and stories about King Arthur end with the fatally wounded king being taken to Avalon. The readers are left with the enigmatic statement that King Arthur will return when England needs him most. This book starts many centuries after Arthur disappeared. Who decides when he will wake, who will wake him and how will he be awakened? The author does an excellent job of answering these questions. The Call of the King is, in my opinion, a wonderful that adds to the legend of King Arthur. I recommend this book.

This was a fun fantastical escape into another world where there’s action, a little mystery and a fun cast of characters. I already want to know more about many of the characters and wouldn’t mind spin-offs or short stories with more backstory on them. I can’t wait to read the next two books and jump back into this world. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for clean young adult fantasy about King Arthur with a twist.

Call of the King is the first book in the Rise of the King series.

This is the first book series from TJ Green that I read. The characters are so enjoyable and well written. I was engaged immediately by watching how the the imagination of TJ Green brought life to King Arthur, for one. It was so enjoyable I read all 3 back to back wanting more from this author. TJ Green. I am an older adult and enjoyed this series immensely. I wanted it to continue. It actually could as the adventures were fresh and new and full of magic. I am grateful that TJ Green shared her wonderful talent with us.

I don't know whether this book/series was written for the youth audience. If it was, it's a good opener for a series. If it was written for an adult audience it missed the mark. I gave the book 3 stars because I found the book to be too juvenile and its characters too simplistic for adults. I would have given the book 4 stars if I were recommending the book for middle school audiences.

I’ve always loved Arthurian legends. This is a new twist. A descendant of King Arthur, after 1500 years are so is chosen to go into the Otherworld by the Lady of the Lake, Vivian, to wake Arthur from his sleep. Many adventures await Tom and his cousin, Beansprout, along the way. The Queen of American Forest has been killing off her own kind. Tom and his band wake Arthur, the suspense during that section made me nauseous, I have a sensitive tummy. Lol. Quite a few shocking reveals in the book. Absolutely adored it and the prequel.

I love T J Green’s books, great storylines, amazing characters. I have read all her books and love them all. The world that Tom and Beansprout enter in the search for their Grandad is magical. The characters from the ‘other’ Woodsmoke and Brenna and of course King Arthur are the kind of friends we would all love to have at our side. This story leaves you feeling good and wanting more. I couldn’t put it down. Excellent, thank you T J Green, more please..

Good story but more for the teenager I think, strangely imagined the story to be an animated film rather than real people. I will be reading the other books in the series even though it is some 50 years since I qualified as a teenager

The characters.. Tom, Brenna, Beansprout, and Woodsmoke are wonderfully described. Arthur, King of Britain, lives up to the legends. Tom’s courage is believable. The story has great villains. Fun to read.
