1945

26-year-old Lieutenant Commander Jacob Miller is now on his second combat tour in the Western Pacific. He’s survived the Battle of Midway and been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. But now the war is grinding away at him. And another bloody battle is always just around the corner…

Commander Warren Troost is determined to prove himself worthy of his family’s outstanding naval legacy. He’s already earned a Navy Cross for his bravery at Pearl Harbor, but now he has to do all he can just to stay alive…

Submarine commander Tony Trapasso has been liberated from a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. He’s been given leave, but he knows it won’t be long before the need to serve his country calls him back into the action…

This is the stirring saga of epic fury at sea and in the sky – of the men who fought and the women who loved them – as the flames of combat marked the climax of one giant conflict and ignited a violent new struggle against a relentless new foe.

CARRIER WAR is the second military action and adventure story in the US Navy Historical Thriller series: a heart-pounding international thriller spanning the War in the Pacific at the end of the Second World War to the fierce battles in Korea.

The book was generally well written, and developed the characters fairly well. There was enough action to sustain the action reader. But honestly I signed onto the series as a World War II series, not as a long-term series about several individuals. It does however hold enough of my attention and interest for me to complete it through the third book.

    Very good item

All thre of Mr. Jewett's novels in the series have a really nice historical/fiction flow with interesting story threads, but, the technically inaccuracies drove me to distraction. I.e. Compass bearings called out in two, or four digit groups when the proper way is always three digits, or " Fighting Squadron 8 " flying bombers. In book three, F-4 and A-4 aircraft went on a raid when suddenly they were joined by (non-existent) A- 8's.
For me it distracted from otherwise fine novels.

The journal continues with the further growth and advancement of Warren, Jacob, and Tony, while Glen was killed in action. The one difference with this book over the first was the greater inclusion of life on the home front and the feelings and emotions of the wives of these brave men. Life for career Naval Officers is really tough on their wives and their families. You have to take some breaks while reading this book, because the action is unrelenting.
The action is also realistic and graphic. I felt the tension in the battles, whether on the sea, on the land, or in the air. I felt the sorrow and loss when comrades were killed, especially with the death of Glen. War is portrayed very vividly and evil is graphically described in this novel as it was in the first book, so be prepared. This is a no holds barred story of men in War and of the women who loved them and stood behind them through the best and worst of times. I really liked this series for its honesty and grittiness. Now I am on to Book 3 in the series.

Solid manly soap opera in the WEB Griffin genre.
Some technical issues were bothersome, like repeated references to our hero pilot firing his wing mounted .50 cal machine guns - the Panther had 4 20mm cannon in the nose). The characters were not always fully fleshed out. At times I was confused who was sleeping with whom.
But these are knits, the story is good and the writing better than most.

YAreal wartime thriller! As we pilots say of flying, hours of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer panic. Very little boredom!

I was concerned that I wouldn't enjoy the second book as much as the first. I needn't have worried. I enjoyed watching the characters and stories unfold every bit as much as I did with the first volume. This one of those books where much of the story is developed through character dialog and not just well-written prose. I found myself fully engrossed in the intertwined stories. Once again, I found that there was a flurry of activity as the book came to an end but that is to be expected as it accomplished its prime purpose, to entice me to buy the third volume which is what I'm going to do right now. I want to be ready for tonight's reading.

Some more action at end of the book but generally not what I expected. If you are not American some of the book can be hard to follow.

I wanted to read about carrier warfare. This title was miss leading. If I wanted to read about navy seals I would have got a book about them.
