Cats in the Belfry (Feline Frolics Book 1) Kindle Edition
When Doreen Tovey brought home her first Siamese kitten she had no idea what she was letting herself in for…
Animal lovers Doreen and Charles Tovey were used to opening their doors to various pets: from Shorty, the highly-strung budgerigar to Blondin, a mischievous squirrel.
They had never been enamoured with cats, but when their country home became overrun with mice they decided to bring in a kitten.
But Siamese pedigrees are not like normal cats…
Before long Doreen’s world is turned upside down by the new arrival … and from that moment on she never looked back.
CATS IN THE BELFRY is the first of Doreen Tovey’s memoirs about living with Siamese cats: set in the British countryside, it is told with wit, mischief, and above all humour.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2023And it's just as sweet and funny as it was then, all those decades ago!!*
I'm wiping away tears as I just finished it- a minute ago I was laughing at the antics of Solomon and Sheba! Anyone who loves cats, or people who love well written British domestic comedy, or just love to laugh, will definitely love this book!
The best part, to me, though?
Just found out that Doreen Tovey wrote a whole series of these! And evidently when she tired of her cats, she started writing about Donkeys!!*
Life doesn't get much better than this....
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2019This is an easy 5+ star read. For any age with a love of Victorian era, English, cats and especially Siamese cats. Anyone who has had the privilege of being owned by cats will love this funny family read. Owned by Siamese? A must. Ms. Tovey writes with love and respectful for animals which makes it perfect to read to little ones before bed. Laugh out loud funny and nostalgic. I'm buying the audio books and hard copies for my collection. All of Ms. Tovey,s books are reasonably priced to get them all. Start your collection to read these very special books, to yourself, to children, to grandchildren or even to your own cats. (You know they love your voice) And, no, I am not related to the author. But I do know a quality book when I read one. (Parents: the passing on of one kitty, bird and squirrel are touched on gently if you have very sensitive young ones. Can easily be omitted from the story) BRAVO MS. TOVEY. keep them coming.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2020Such a fun book! I am a cat lover. (Why else read it?). However, apparently it is only a work of fiction and not based on real events, which makes it a bit disappointing. Still, it was,a fun read. Just glad my real cats aren't as crazy as the ones in this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2012This and its companion book, "Cats in Cahoots" are wonderfully written books about the lives of the author's two Siamese cats. I first fell in love with the author, Doreen Tovey, her husband and the many wonderful characters that fill her books, nearly 50 years ago (yes, that's right, fifty years). I am happy to see her books are being published again for new generations to enjoy! You, too, will fall in love with the cats -- siblings Solomon and Sheba -- and laugh at their adventures over the years as they grow from kittens to adults in a small English village in the country. True to life, there are a few tears of sadness along with laughter, but the cats' often hilarious antics are true, as the guardian of any Siamese cat can verify (myself included) and their story will keep you smiling from page one. Doreen Tovey has written many other books about her precious Siamese cats and other pets over the years, but these two are my favorites. I would give this book a 10-star rating if I could. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2018Doreen Tovey's books have been a favourite with me for nearly forty years. She writes about her darling cats and donkey with such humour, I often laugh out loud. I never get sick of reading these books and have downloaded them to my Kindle so that I can keep on re-reading them and so has my daughter. We've all lost beloved pets and Doreen takes us through the highs and lows with such charm and wit that it is impossible to be sad for too long. Feel good books for all ages. (Especially if your neighbours think you are a bit barmy)
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2014This book was a great read. Having Siamese cats is a challenge and never boring. This is something the author can attest to as we watch the shenanigans of her two Siamese. I laughed till I cried at the adventures of the Siamese as some of them happened to us. We have two Siamese and always have had two Siamese throughout our 43 year marriage. The antics of Siamese are so amusing, its very similar to the book.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2016This entertaining book will appeal toanyone who has ever been owned by a Siamese. The author is British, so her humor tends to be dry, which appeals to me. The book tends to be low key, featuring amusing anecdotes that, although from a bygone era, still have universal appeal to cat owners.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2022The word I was seeking is “Anthropomorphism”. Then supplying their conversations as well made this read dreary after awhile. I’m sure Siamese cat lovers may enjoy this book (and there are more), but I did complete the read. Solomon and Sheba wore me out. The time element in the early fifties in England may have also influenced my reactions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating, feel good and laugh out loud read.
Read this at school and as a result I have been tyrannised by Siamese cats ever since I was old enough to acquire my first chocolate point. Slightly old fashioned but delightful, Doreen Tovey has elegant and humorous prose but its the cats that steal every scene. I don't think anyone has understood and captured the fascinating (and maddening) characteristics of Siamese better than Doreen. Re-reading this I was worried that it would have dated or lost its charm but it hasn't. The idyllic setting, the village cast of Father Adams, Miss Wellington and the Tovey household make this an enchanting, feel good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars I just had to keep reading.
Loved it! I remember when it came out in serial form in Mum’s magazine in the 1950s and it,s still as funny now. I am a Cat lover still.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for cat lovers
I originally heard about this book from my parents, who owned many Siamese cats over the years and they remembered it. So I was delighted to find it on Amazon and quickly ordered copies to give as Christmas gifts and one for myself. Absolutely great book for all cat lovers but especially if Siamese hold a special place in your heart. Highly recommend for gift giving ...

5.0 out of 5 stars another wonderful and enchanting cat book by this author
Doreen Tovey's cat books are addictive: once you have started reading them, you won't be able to stop. They are all about the life of Doreen and her husband and their animals (mainly cats) in a rural village in Somerset. They are charming, funny, entertaining, and a nice description of rural English village life between the 1950s and 1980s, with certain villagers appearing in all of the books. A highly recommendable read! Being a cat lover and owner of 7 cats myself, I can relate to many of the cat stories she describes. The books are a MUST for all Cat Lovers!
