About the author

Elizabeth Bailey grew up in Africa with unconventional parents, where she loved reading and drama. On returning to England, she developed her career in acting, theatre directing and finally writing.
Elizabeth's latest venture is The Lady Fan Mystery series, published by Sapere Books. The novels feature amateur sleuth Lady Ottilia Fanshawe and a cast of family members including her husband and champion Lord Francis Fanshawe. She originally published Regency romances with Harlequin Mills & Boon and has many titles in her Brides by Chance Regency Adventures series, now also published by Sapere, as well as standalone Regency and Georgian romances.
Elizabeth also writes edgy women's fiction: Her dual time novel Fly The Wild Echoes, which deals with past lives, and For One More Tomorrow, where the ghost of the real Macbeth returns, protesting his villainous portrayal by Shakespeare. And she has published a romantic suspense novella, Silence of a Stranger.
Elizabeth lives in Sussex, England. She is still an inveterate reader with eclectic tastes and she spends her spare time helping other writers improve their craft.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2019Such a delightful story told more in the words of times past that was really wonderful. Two friend's who secretly admired each other but expectations and promises stood in the way.
Marianne, a poor relation that had been taken in by her cousin, Grace, Lady Purford when she had been orphaned at twelve. Grace's stepson Justin, the now Earl of Purford, became good friend's with Marianne and she had secretly loved him from the first. When she got older she hoped he would offer for her.
Justin had promised his father he would marry someone in his class so that he could sire a heir and carry on the line. But he did not love her and he secretly has feelings for Marianne.
But sometimes fate steps in the way and seems to alter the course of love. I really enjoyed this story so much and truly cannot wait to read more from this author. Her descriptons and characters made me feel I was back in Regency England and I could only smile as I turned the last page! I cannot wait to read more!!

Elizabeth Bailey's Brides by Chance series is a lot of fun to read, and I enjoyed this one. I love a "poor relation" story, especially when the H and the h keep their love hidden from each other. The 'big reveal' is usually so romantic; it gets me every time :-)
No exception here, the 'reveal' is a little long in coming. Both the H and the h are attractive characters, but things could have resolved a little quicker, without detracting from the quality of the story.
Try this series - so far my favorites have been the first and the seventh.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2019I have missed reading a Regency era story with a lot of the fun, era colloquialism and sayings.
The hero and heroine are basically good people trying to do the right thing by their families. But their people pleasing keeps them away from each other. There is plenty of angst here. I love angst.
At times i I wanted to hit them over the head but that was also part of the charm and fun of this book.
All in all, I highly recommend this book.
PS I think it would be really fun for Grace to get a HEA.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2016What a tension filled story, but wonderful! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I wanted to reach into the book and shake both Justin and Maryanne until they came to their senses.
All through the story they both skirted around their true feelings for each other, at times it angered me, made me cry,and made my heart goes out to each of them.
What awful burdens people of the tongue were under! I can't imagine marrying a person based on rank or position instead of love. How unhappy most of them were. Thank goodness those demands are behind us today. Well I certainly hope they are.
Beautiful love story actually! Well done Elizabeth.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2016This is a fun, clean, light, romance and it is great to watch these two lovers stumble over their feelings until they get it right. I like Elizabeth Bailey’s books because they are romantic but not full of unnecessary explicit sex as so many romance stories of today. Her characters behave in a way true to the time period and speak with words true to the time as well. I’m always glad to hear she has a new book coming out and look forward to more of them. I was given a free copy of this book by the author (thank you so much) and this is my honest voluntary review.
Marianne is a “poor relation” who was taken in by her cousin, Grace, Lady Purford, when orphaned at the age of 12. Grace is also the step-mother to Justin, the young Earl of Purford, who Marianne has loved since the first time she saw him. They have been best friends for years and she was disappointed when he did not offer for her hand when she turned 18 several years ago. Since then she has been hiding her feelings for him. Justin is about to marry a woman he does not love but who his late father chose as the perfect bride for him. He would rather be marrying Marianne but his father droned it into him that he has a duty to marry someone of the “right blood” to continue the family line. Fortunately, other family members see that Marianne and Justin are perfect for each other so when his bride-to-be exposes her deceitful nature they are there to nudge Marianne and Justin into each other’s arms.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2019Marianne has been in love with Justin for years, and she thought it hopeless. Justin promised he would wed Selina. When the engagement is scandalously broken, will Marianne have her chance or will misunderstanding consign her to spinsterhood forever?
This was a delight to read. I enjoyed seeing Marianne and Justin. Of course, I would have liked to see better communication between them but the story would have been over before it began. Nevertheless, they both were lovely characters.
Though a lot of their getting to know each other happened before the beginning of the novel, their attachment was obvious. They had time to know each other and that made the romance so much sweeter.
The rest of the cast was amusing. The pace of the plot was slow at times, especially when the miscommunication happens between Marianne and Justin.
I would recommend this to fans of sweet Regency romance. I received a free copy from NetGalley for reviewing purposes and all opinions expressed are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2025This book was hard for me to get into at first. I think a lot had to do with the language. There were several words I had never heard before and had to look up. The characters were fine, even if they could be frustrating at times. The book got better towards the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2024I was kept in suspense through the majority of this book. I wanted to scream at Grace. thanks to Alex ,Justin was able to finally declare his love for Marianne.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tension-filled shortish story
After reading the excerpt I had to buy this. As other reviewers have noted, there is a tension throughout the story, keeping the reader wondering about the outcome. Marianne is a poor relation of Justin's stepmother; she has loved Justin for years, but he is trapped in a betrothal by a deathbed promise to his father. Marianne is very pragmatic; however, when she has a chance to honestly express her feelings to Justin, she denies them.

5.0 out of 5 stars read and enjoy!
Really enjoyed this :) marianne has been in love with justin since she was 12 years old, but due to a past promise he had to become engaged the the eminently suitable selina, but scandal erupts and justin is free. he needs a bride, but can marianne ever be considered eligible as the poor relation? and just what are justin's feelings for her? this story takes you right back into 1800 and is one i will read again and again! though it has to be said 'friday dreaming' is my all time favourite :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet story
Beautiful and steady, yet going through heartbreak. Marianne is sweet and steady, an epitome of decorum, yet loving Justin with a passion. Truly bound by duty, Justin suffocates, longing for Marianne with every ounce of his heart.
They were bound to overcome all difficulties, of course. But what I loved were their characters, the way they both support each other, accept their own faults, and cherish their love, even as they taste passion and togetherness. Truly made for each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars A proper regency
At last a proper regency, with good characters, neat plotting, a good grip on period & a happy ending. No improbable dramas, social justice maunderings, or modern dialogue to spoil the mood.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Clean Regency novel
3.5 stars.. yes, as other reviewers mentioned there definitely was a lot of strain between H and h and one could easily feel it, but reading their angst and tension for 200 pages was too much. Secondly why is there so much coffee drinking during regency era? Though the story is well narrated, there should have been lighter moments too , one can't read only about the anxiety between Justin and Marianne all the time. Story stars with Justin getting betrothed to Selina as per parents wishes. Marianne is poor relation of Grace who is also step mother of Justin. Marianne is orphan so is dependent on Grace's charity. Both love each other but maintain their silence. Marianne knows she is way beneath as Justin is Earl. This engagement leads to strain between their friendship. Selena elopes leaving Justin free. Here he bungles up not sure if Marianne loves him or not, proposes her, she thinks he has done out of pity and refuses , now both believe that the other person doesn't love so again we feel anixety and strain. By this time I was wondering if there was ever going to be HEA, the author seems delighted to write so much misery .. finally towards the end, they have the courage to reveal their feelings and we have happy ending. I believe the author could have done better, there should have been balance of light heartedness and anxiety.Maybe I differ, I cannot read only misery and anxiety in a book. Overall ok read
