Could a mysterious stranger be the answer to Diana’s prayers…?
1809, England
After the death of Sir Peter Chalfont his daughter, Diana, and her mother were left nearly penniless and at the mercy of their relative Sir Sidney, who inherited the Chalfont estate.Sir Sidney had no plans to retire to the countryside from his frivolous life in London and the women were allowed to remain at Chesdene Manor.
But with no money for upkeep, the grand building soon fell into disrepair.
Intelligent and headstrong, Diana is determined to take her future into her own hands. She advertises for a tenant in the hope of supplying herself with an income.
But who is the strange man who agrees to the lease? Why does he seem to have a particular interest in the building?
And how long can Diana keep her home before the rakish Sir Sidney returns to claim it…?
TENANT OF CHESDENE MANOR is a classic Regency Romance by Alice Chetwynd Ley: a traditional British, historical adventure story with a twist of suspense and mystery, set during the Napoleonic Wars.‘Alice’s books were amongst the first Regencies I ever read and I’ve loved them ever since’ – The Word Wenches
‘These vintage Regency romances hover somewhere between Jane Austen and the genre as we know it today. I really enjoy them.’ - Sonya’s Stuff

- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2018The Tenant Of Chesdene Manor by Alice Chetwynd Ley has been on my keeper shelf for a very long time in fact I have a copy of this book that was issued in 1974.
I was in my late teens when this was published and I will show some of the Blurb from the back cover that would have made me buy and read this wonderful book with relish.
Dazzling, fearless, she was a gambler's daughter betting life and love in a wager of the heart....
A PLAY OF PASSION IN FORTUNE's HAND
Beautiful, enterprising, keen-witted Diana. Her sole legacy was the use of a small wing of the once glorious Chesdene Manor, ancestral home of the Chalfonts. Ingenuity suggested leasing the delapidated main house for income to sustain herself and her widowed mother.
What mysterious force brought the handsome, brooding Christopher Richmond to apply for tenancy of Chesdene Manor?
Reading this re-issue was like getting into the wayback machine./time machine. The cover is a little more modern but the lovely romance story with it's hidden secrets and a lovely heroine who helps the hero to fall in love and to reveal his secrets. I do hope more of this authors lovely Historical Romance books will be re-issued.
I highly recommend this book.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley and Sapere Books for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2024Only read this book if you don't mind a little close family intermarriage. First cousins! I realize it's just a story but still. Gross.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2018When a mysterious man becomes the tenant of Chesdyne Manor, Diana Chalfont is both relieved and delighted. Though the estate is owned by a cousin, the income will help support herself and her family. She goes to London with a friend, frequently encounters Mr. Christopher Richmond, and finds herself being pursued by the very cousin who inherited the title and estate at her father’s death.
I’ve begun to think of this author as a definite favorute of mine, ranking with Georgette Heyer. In this novel, we have Diana, who is a lively, practical young woman, who has seen her family’s fortune decline steadily. She knows her own mind and heart, and does not encourage men’s attention just to make a good match.
The plot moves at a good pace. There is a secondary plot, a growing romance that is sweet and pleasant to read along with Diana’s story. It is easy to see through the twists of the plot, but it does not detrimental to the story.
I would recommend this to readers who enjoy classic stories. I received a free copy from NetGalley for reviewing purposes.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021Really enjoyed this “fan-fiction” tribute to Austen. Marvelous story and I so enjoy the genre when it’s done so well. This is second or third book read by this author and my favorite by far. Plot, characters and dastardly deeds made for a great read. The more modern authors give male and female characters more authenticity that modern readers relate to.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2022All at once there was both too much and too little. Too much mystery, too little romance. Too many people and stories, too little development. It all seemed rushed, but slow.
For me, the blend was curdled. I don't object to romance with a bit of mystery but this was instead many small romances, one unresolved, and a large messy mystery.
I think I was left a bit bewildered by it all.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2021This is only my second book by the author but fully intend to read them all. Totally entertaining story. Glad they are available on Amazon Kindle Unlimited!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2021I found this story pleasurable. A tale of a young lady and her mother fallen upon dire straights because of her father's habits.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2018I have read other works by this author. They are all interesting and lighter than those written by Georgette Heyer, yet are in similar veins. There is mystery, a dastardly villain or two, a surprising hero who enjoys investigating mysteries, and a sweet, intelligent heroine. Of course, there is a HEA, though it is implied on the final page, in a most humorous manner. This is an easy read, with a little suspense, but easy enough to figure out who will win the lady.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good
A good read. Author very much of the era and style of Georgette Heyer. Maybe not be quite so witty but substantial plot without relying on sexual content. Certainly will read more from this author
