Israel, 1960s

Struggling to find a purpose in life, she has fallen into a desperate cycle of drink and depression.

Her only friend is Kofi, an itinerant Arab house-painter.

Kofi, with the help of his charming half-Jewish daughter Hanna, gradually brings Gerda back from the brink.

And when he offers Gerda the chance to adopt a desperate orphan, hope floods into her heart.

But moving forward is never easy. And soon devastating events will conspire against Gerda’s new beginning…

Have always loved Lynne Reid Banks. I had this book years ago, loaned it out and never got it back. It was definitely worth another read!

There’s no denying that Reid Banks is a craft woman with words. This story about a broken woman who takes in broken children to heal, is not without flaws though. If you don’t like reading about neurotic characters then this won’t be for you. Also the protagonist is often quite unlikable and makes at least one questionable choice (although that might make her character more interesting) the supporting characters for the majority of the book aren’t very interesting (IMO) then towards the end there’s a couple who have such a great back story, but unfortunately we don’t spend a lot of time with them. The settings of the book are so well written that I was there in sweaty steaming passageways and hopeless smoke filled rooms and if I was interrupted when reading it felt quite jarring to come back to reality

I found it long and drawn out, although as it went on I started to enjoy it. Bot for me
