    Cora Harrison schafft es, mit ihrem 2011 erschienenen "Death of a Chimney Sweep", nahtlos an die spannende Handlung der bisherigen Bände der Reihe "The London Murder Mysteries" anzuknüpfen.

    Der vierte Teil der Serie ist wie immer dramatisch, aufregend und unglaublich spannend. Auf 181 Seiten zeichnet die Autorin ein lebendiges Bild der Stadt London im 19. Jahrhundert. Man spürt, riecht, fühlt förmlich den Nebel, die faulige Luft, welche von der Themse aufsteigt, sieht die engen Gassen, spärlich erleuchtet von Fackeln und Gaslaternen, erlebt hautnah die Armut und das Elend der Großstadt.

    Alfie Sykes entdeckt den Leichnam von Joe dem Kaminkehrerjungen, welcher achtlos unter einer Gaslaterne geworfen wurde, direkt am Ufer der Themse. Niemand sonst scheint sich um den Tod des armen Jungen zu kümmern. Aber Alfie ist fest davon überzeugt, dass Joe ermordet wurde. Also macht er sich mit seiner Bande, bestehend aus seinem blinden Bruder Sammy, ihren Cousins Jack und Tom, sowie Sarah, einer Spülmagd und dem Hund Mutsy, daran, den Fall zu lösen.

    Bald schon muss Alfie sein Leben hoch oben auf den Dächern von London riskieren und eintauchen in die dunkle, geheimnisvolle Welt der Kaminkehrer, um eine tödliche Wahrheit aufzudecken.

    Gauner, Ganoven, die vornehmen reichen Leute, Straßenhändler und Bettler bevölkern das Buch und die Freunde müssen sich gefährlichen Gegnern stellen, wie etwa Grimston, dem Kaminkehrermeister, einer Verbrecherbande oder einer ganzen Horde von Ratten.

    In einem unglaublich rasanten Tempo wird der Leser durch die Geschichte geführt und man verfolgt voller Spannung und Begeisterung die Geschehnisse.

    Zwar sind gute Englischkenntnisse vonnöten, um der Handlung zu folgen, doch ist es keineswegs so, dass man ständig ein Wörterbuch brauchen würde, weshalb das Buch für junge Leser doppelt interessant wird, da sie aufgrund der fesselnden Geschichte von sich aus Wörter nachschlagen und sich so ein guter Lerneffekt erzielen lässt.

    Auch die kurzen Kapitel mit zumeist einem spannenden Cliffhanger am Ende, laden zum Weiterlesen ein und machen es schwer, das Buch aus der Hand zu legen.

    Besonders Jungen werden sich mit den Helden identifizieren können, aber Cora Harrison gelingt es, durch die Figur der sympathischen und klugen Sarah, ganz sicher auch Mädchen für diese herausragende und wirklich großartige Serie zu begeistern.

Gute Unterhaltung und angenehme Lesestunden sind garantiert. Eine faszinierende Serie voller Spannung und interessanten historischen Details, Herzenswärme und packenden Kriminalfällen. Man darf gespannt sein, auf die nächsten Bände der Reihe. Sehr zu empfehlen.
