Christmas in Nuala (The Inspector de Silva Mysteries Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 1,288 ratings

It’s Christmas time and the little town of Nuala in the beautiful tea country of colonial Ceylon is full of good cheer.
Until murder overshadows the festivities.
The mystery he needs to solve baffles Inspector de Silva. It’s just as well he has his English wife Jane to support him in his race to unmask the villain and save an endangered romance.
If you love vintage-style mysteries, spiced with colourful characters and a dash of humour, don’t miss the Inspector de Silva series.

Christmas in Nuala was originally published as a Kindle Short Read but is now available in paperback as part of book 11 in the series, Break from Nuala.

“This is an unexpected treasure. Set in 1930s Ceylon. It is an interesting look at colonialism from the colonial side. I was engaged from the first page and kept in thrall until the end. Inspector de Silva and Jane are well drawn characters and I plan on following them through further adventures." Anna

“I started reading this series after a quick trip to Sri Lanka. Now I am hooked and read them as fast as they come out. Even if you have never been to Sri Lanka these books evoke an interesting period in history and the low-tech state of forensics in the 1930's. The clash of cultures is interesting as well. I can't say enough good things about this series.” S.Smith

Welcome to my author page! Whether you're new to my books or have already read some of them, I'm so pleased that you found your way here. I began my writing life with four historical novels, but the lure of murder mystery finally proved too strong and I began to create my Inspector de Silva mysteries. The series now runs to eleven books with more on the way. They're set in Ceylon, the former name for the island of Sri Lanka, in the 1930s. I'm told by readers that they love the books for their engaging characters, their colourful setting, and their vintage style of mystery.

Writing is inevitably quite a solitary occupation, so I love to connect with my readers. I hope you'll sign up to my newsletter at my website,, https://harrietsteel.com, or come and chat on Facebook (Harriet Steel Author) or Twitter (@harrietsteel1). Like Inspector de Silva, I'm a keen gardener and I often share my successes (and failures) as well as snippets about my life in general. I look forward to being in touch.

Best wishes,

Harriet

More about Harriet Steel

Harriet Steel is a British author who writes a series of widely praised, atmospheric mysteries in a traditional style. A few years ago, she spent time on the beautiful island of Sri Lanka and this is where they are set, but in the 1930s rather than the modern day, when it was still the British colony of Ceylon. Her love of history, art, and travel influences her writing, and she also published four historical novels before turning to crime.

She was born in London but not long afterwards her family moved to a farm in the country where she grew up. She later studied law at Cambridge University and was a lawyer for many years before becoming a writer. She would love to go back in time and spend a day having lunch with Hercule Poirot, tea with Miss Marple, and dinner at the Ritz with Lord Peter Wimsey.

This series is just wonderful. I started out with the first one, and I'm working on book four. I enjoy de Silva and his lovely wife Jane. These are "gentle" reads, even though they deal with murder, and they're historical as well, so I like learning about that part of the world and that time period. Highly recommended!

I wish that I had found this short gem of a story actually at the holidays, but it was, nonetheless, charming, even when read during springtime. Any seasoned mystery reader will know at once who the murderer is, and will spot the main clue; the fun lies in seeing how the characters assemble the information proving that their instinct to shield the obvious and supposed culprit is quite correct. Despite being short, a nicely Gothic atmosphere to much of the tale, and a touch of philosophy make for a well-rounded, intriguing mystery.

I loved this series - everything about it! First, I loved Jane and Shanty. I so enjoyed their love for each other. These books are so thoughtfully written! They are not fast paced which allowed for excellent character development. As a result you really get to know the characters well. I so enjoyed spending time with each of them - well, except for the bad guys. I loved Jane and Shanti's home. I enjoyed his garden. I loved the rain and the mud and the heat. I was always waiting for it to get cooler - knowing it would't. Poor Ella, but I know that with Jane as a friend, she will be alright. Thank you for such a wonderful series.

An enjoyment of what Christmas is like in a different era and place. One didn’t expect a.quarrel after they all left, to end in murder of the Uncle. With.Jane by his side the Inspector has a case to solve, of which Jane has the missing piece. Good series, and this is an added one to enjoy during the holidays.

I really like all of her others novels. This is more of a short story with rather insipid characters and plot.

Inspector Jane solves the mystery! Another delightful chapter of the Nuala Inspector Shanti da Silva series. If you like character driven stories (Louise Penney's Armand Gamache comes to mind), you would enjoy these mystery-light novels.
