Claiming Marcus is an excellent start to the Lords of Discord series. The vampire world the author has built within our world is rich in detail and rife with danger and intrigue.
Marcus is a strong character, taking the health and wellbeing of his family as his ongoing burden to bear. He is lonely, though. Marcus was raised with prejudice many years ago. It is always at the forefront of his mind when he ponders his desires and abject loneliness. He is a juxtaposition of innocent and worldly. Sweet and stern. Artistic and deadly.
Ethans’ need to find the vampire that massacred his family leads him to Marcus and his family. He is also a strong character with a definite sense of honor that keeps him from endangering any that are innocent.
These two learn, over time, to love and trust each other, even as they keep their secrets. I like that the author gave them this time together. They did not need immediate physical satisfaction if they were to grow into each other. But their passion is intense and gives some spice to the story.
There is a smooth flow from scene to scene and action to action that kept my attention from the moment I opened the book. I kept a feeling of satisfaction even as I made my way through the pages, having found trust in this author quickly. I don't have the words to tell you why I feel this way, but I do.
Claiming Marcus is the first I've read by this author, and I look forward to more.

I enjoyed this book one in a new series about the Verik vampire family of brothers. I like that each brother is a fairly unique personality though it does follow the formula of : playboy, politician, scientist, spy. There is a “father” figure as well who is mostly absent from the novel, as well as my biggest gripe, the mom, also mostly absent from the novel but still a huge part of the “why do they act this way”. Overall this was a mid level spice book with some moderate politics and a “save the humans” anti vamp group dead set on taking out the Verik Vampire clan (all 6 of them). The story didn’t feel too rushed and the background was explained enough to let me know what was going on without getting bogged in the details of world building and vampire mythology.
Why I deducted a star: the mom. I mean, I get it, she’s got a mental illness but holy heck. She keeps almost killing her kids, not sure in this case keeping her alive is a mercy. In fact, since she has to be basically caged the rationale “it’s not her fault, she’s wouldn’t be this way if…” is bologna. You are talking about an apex predator with psychosis where she attacks, and tries to rip out hearts of, those near her. Nope. Nope, don’t get it, don’t feel sympathy. In fact I was ready to DNF over it when the author fixed the problem in a weirdly anticlimactic “oh!… is that how…? ok fine.” Kind of way. In fact the deus ex machina happened a little too often to make the story a five star for me, even in romance terms. Overall I liked it. It wasn’t a meh read, but enough annoyed me (seriously the escape from the Wolf, and the magic bullets…just eye roll) to drop to four stars.

I don’t even know why I put off reading this one, but I should not have! It’s so freaking good. It’s literally everything I wanted from a vampire book. It’s spicy, lots of biting, vampire society, a group of brothers, giant conflict. So much goodness and now I can’t wait for all the other brothers. And daddy Aiden!

I am typically not someone that enjoys third person point of view in books; that being said, with this being dual third person POV, it was very easy to follow and separate the characters!

Jocelynn did a fantastic job with character development; both Marcus and Ethan work through things and their relationship is stronger for it!

I adored the found family feel to this story; the way in which Marcus’s brothers took Ethan in, even after the bomb that was dropped on them, was so heartfelt and wholesome! The banter between all the characters is also top tier!

This one was a book I have never seen recommended but it truly was such a good read!! I cannot wait to dive further into the series!

Please get past the 1st 2 chapters. It starts a little clunky and you feel like you're all over the place But believe me it's worth it. This story is amazing. Million 1 tails of vampire diaries in humans And they're interactions. It's hard to find any uniqueness But this author has managed to do just that. She gives you a tail woven that is not only unique but exciting The passion between Ethan and Marcus Is beautiful.. It's Ethan's face In himself himself and in Marcus That you fall in love with. Marcus is devotion to his family Is the perfect character to start this series.

    Character development 5⭐
    No misunderstanding/backstabbing tropes ( thank goodness )
    No BS filler drama
    Streamline story

I adore this story! I really enjoyed the balance between the romance and suspense factors. It demonstrates the strength of family bonds, loyalty, and love through the good and the bad. This book has it all: sweet scenes, heart-breaking scenes, bloody scenes, steamy scenes, and witty dialogue. While I love the relationship between the two MCs and the way it plays a bit with flipping stereotypes, the magical part of this story is the poignant relationship between brothers and how easily it expands to include Ethan. I will absolutely be reading the rest of the series and already know this book is a definite re-read for me.

I loved the world building in this book. The vampire political scene and its intricacies make an excellent background for this wonderful love story. I can’t wait to read Rafe’s story as I have fallen in love with all four brothers and their sire as well. A great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haven't read a book with vampires for a while...but this was worth it
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 5, 2023
Claiming Marcus is an excellent example of what a vampire series should be. The vampires have their hierarchy, have the usual aversion to sunlight, and each have their own unique talent, (and no, I don't mean their prowess with a musical instrument.)
This focuses on a human, Ethan, whose family were killed by vampires, he hates them, and gets involved with a shady organisation, who have the worst --yet funniest-- name imaginable, but as it's been a while since I read this series, I can't remember it off the top of my head.
Ethan is strapped for cash, managing to find a job with the enigmatic Marcus Varik, who happens to be the eldest of the brothers, and comes across as the serious type. Oh, and you guessed it, Marcus is a vampire.
I won't delve too much into the details as you should read it for yourself, but it's certainly gotten me back into vampire related books, as this one ticks all the boxes, and is one of the only vampire books I have read that features boy love.
It's an excellent start to the series, with some fun action scenes, some chilled out moments between Ethan and Marcus, some brotherly bonding scenes and some hot scenes later on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meet the vamps
Reviewed in Canada on June 3, 2020
Lived this first book of what promises to be an excellent series about the Varik clan!

Ethan and Marcus were fantastic together but it doesn't just focus in on the couple and lose the rest of the world. There is an introduction if all the Varik brothers, the world they live in, other vampires, the hierarchy, everything! Not to mention the human part with Ethan and what brings him into the orbit of their world. It was well thought out, even down to the part that things aren't working out the way they should, and both setup this first book well and leads into the many adventures that are sure to happen in ensuing books!

Marcus is the oldest brother and outside of their site he is essentially the leader. It has meant coordinating his brothers, checking in on all of the family, fixing messes, smoothing over concerns with the council, and just generally looking out for the many facets of their lives. He keeps an assistant to help him do all this and manage in the day time. The assistant must be available at all times and it is quickly clear that they must also be available to help out with any crises with Marcus's brothers, mostly about getting needed supplies. Marcus looks after everyone else, has his while life, so having someone come in that would have the priority of looking out for him is a bigger change than even he realizes.

Ethan lost his entire family, in fact his entire community, to a group of vampires when he was a child. Determined to avenge those he has lost he wants to kill the vampire that did it, but with only the knowledge that it was a group of men lead by a crazy woman there isn't much to go on. When a group that hunts vampires sets him onto the Varik's it seems obvious; a group of brothers with a reclusive mother who is known to be a problem. Ethan goes undercover as Marcus's assistant but everything he sees starts to throw what he thought he knew into question. As the deadline for his job is getting near and there are pressures coming from both vampires and humans, Ethan has to decide how to help the Varik's. And the Varik's have to decide what sort of future they want.

An excellent read! Looking forward to getting to see the next stories through the eyes of the brothers.
