About the author

Following retirement, after thirty-two years as a police officer, working mainly as a detective, Michael returned to the deadly business of murder, as a writer. His past work brought him very close to some nasty characters, including psychopaths, and gruesome cases and he draws on that experience to craft his novels: There is nothing gentle about Michael's stories.
His landmark novel 'Heart of the Demon', published in 2012, introduced Detective Sergeant Hunter Kerr. He has since written five novels and a novella featuring him. He also released the first of his DS Scarlett Macey books in 2016.
He is also the author of a stand alone crime novella 'Chasing Ghosts' and a true crime thriller 'Safecracker'.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2013I have read the three books so far in the series. I would love to see 20 more! The characters are very real. All of the detectives etc are well developed. You get to know them all. None are thrown in for fluff. From the start you really like them all and become very involved. It's well written and intelligent. The perfect mix of the situations, procedurals, and developed personal relationships.
Sorry I didn't get into the details, but with many reviews, it's like being told the end of a movie before you watch it. You will not be disappointed with the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2014The story and characters are gripping and well developed, but the copy-editing is so bad as to make this a difficult read. The final chapters, especially, read like a rough draft, and almost every apostrophe is used incorrectly. I don't know if it's just the Kindle version (which is lacking commas throughout--and not just the pedantically correct ones, but those essential to making sense of the sentences), but the book desperately needs a copy editor. I'm reluctant to read another because this process--despite the strong story--was so frustrating! Caveat emptor.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2014Having given the other two DS Hunter Kerr novels five stars each how do I go about rating this one even higher? Like the other two novels this is an excellent read and I would highly recommend it. There are two separate storylines, firstly there is a murder case that Hunter Kerr is trying to solve as well as another storyline involving his own father. Even though there is no connection between the two stories, apart from Kerr's involvement, this dual storyline works very well. I am a fan of novels where an incident in the past plays out into the future and in this case I was able to work out part of the solution linking the past to the present, but I won't give away any endings here. As far as I can see there are only three novels in the series but I hope Michael Fowler has a few more in the pipeline.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2013I have read all three of this author's books and I really like them. The skeleton of the police procedural is fleshed out with the telling of how the crime is solved. The main character, Hunter Kerr, is very likeable although one must feel sympathy for the spouses of police persons who have to manage on their own whilst a crime is being investigated. It was a good change to read of the two main characters' intact marriages and Kerr's wife being such a support for her husband.
Some minor points: incorrect use of possessive apostrophies. unnecessary use of precise terms e.g. mandible instead of jaw, location 503 - early doors in her career - I can't guess what the correct word would be. - She kir with the other location 2475. A few more but nothing that a good proof reader shouldn't be able to clear up.
I look forward to reading more of this author's work

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2014This is my first book by this author but it won't be the last. He covered just enough details to not drown the novel with them. I am going back to read the first book in the series. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just gets better with each book
This 2nd continued episode from the series builds on the first introducing more characters and multiple story lines making this a really good read. Whether its because I have lived most of my life around where the books are based or just that the author was a former detective himself but the books feel authentic with the right amount of attention to detail that makes it all so believable. Can't wait to read the next instalment.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pint of Wards & a whiskey chaser
The second CD Hunter Kerr book
Michael Fowler`s experiences as a South Yorkshire cop come through in his compelling writing. He had me captured from the word go with his portrayal of the underbelly of Scotland and south Yorkshire. Great reading, I enjoyed this and his first book immensely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Second book in a series of three.
As in 'Heart of the Demon', a good detective story. This was an excellent read. D.S.Hunter Kerr is a man who thinks about and looks after his family as well as being a copper through and through. A team player but a clever individual. I loved it! Hears to book no. 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Cold Death'
I really enjoyed this book - it showed how the police work without blinding us with science and yet being very informative at the same time. The characters were believable and likeable (except the villains of course!) It proves that you don't have to use foul language to make the conversations more 'realistic'. It was all the more interesting for having 2 separate murder plot and Cold Death (D.S.Hunter Kerr) investigations running at the same time. The narrative flowed easily, unlike some books. I look forward to more books by Michael Fowler.
