- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2022Format: Audible AudiobookVerified PurchaseVery enjoyable, have read all of these available on Kindle, and purchased the 3 of them that are currently audiobooks on Kindle. I love reading and hearing these vintage type books that - like in the old movies - keep the bedroom activities private. Personally, I read and buy many modern books, but skip past all those detailed sex scenes which most modern authors feel they must insert, and it is such as pleasure to be able to hear an ENTIRE audiobook without having to delete parts I find offensive. Fortunately most modern authors aren't yet forcing readers to experience the detailed realities of a character urinating, defecating, picking their nose, but with regard to sex scenes, many now cross a similarly disgustingly privacy border.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2012The book cover says - " Given the choice of wedlock or a debtor's cell, the dashing Nicholas, Viscount Torvil, agreed to marry a woman he had never met. Of course, he would continue his scandalous affaire with the flame-haired Cecile, Lady Montaigne. Hadn't Katherine Harmon, bartered-bride-to-be, overheard his plans for future infidelities before they were even wed? She would make him rue the day he bought his bride...and the night he tried to melt her with kisses. She was determined to do anything - but fall in love with the rake she had wed!" A well written book exploring how a girl tries to protect herself from the hurt of infidelity and the dangers of overhearing remarks not meant for her ear. Convincing misunderstandings underlie the plot and good characterisations make the tale an enjoyable romance. (A 1980 romance so if you are looking for explicit sex, look elsewhere.)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thought Kate was a good character in the book and Torvil was as deplorable as a person could be. He is a degenerate without any redeemable qualities whatsoever. I read the book until he decided to end their agreement and raped her. At that point I decided that I disliked him so much that I couldn't read anymore of this farce. No person should be subjected to that sad ordeal. I have to enjoy a book to continue reading so I'll move along and hope for better writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2015Nicholas Viscount Torvil is going to have to marry a woman his father picked for him. He had gambled and could never pay all his debts. His father refused to bail him out again.KatherineHarmon was to be the bride. He had to marry her or go to debtor's prison She over heard a man telling his mistress at a ball he was being forced to marry. He also told Cecile ,Lady Montaigne it would make no change in their relationship. Katherine did not want to marry someone she did not know. She could not believe when she meet Nick he was the man at the ball. She first refused him but only agreed so her sister could marry the man she loved.
The book relates the ups and downs of their marriage .they both are beginning to like one another but won't admit it.I think things could have worked out sooner for them. Katherine could have told him about overhearing him at the ball. They also took a backward step when she was confronted with Cecile. I will leave it up to you to see if they get their HEA. This is a clean romance for people looking for that type of book
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was swept up in the story almost from the beginning. There is a lot of emotion shown by the characters in this book. I liked Kate right away, but Nicholas had to grow on me. I didn’t have much sympathy for him in the beginning. As the story unfolded, I came to appreciate his qualities. Overall a good read, not my favorite by this author, but still a good story.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is not going to be for everyone. The entire book is about a marriage of convenience and in turmoil before it begins.
Both main characters are fleshed out, interesting and complicated. This is not a whimsical, fluffy book.
Highly recommended
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGood story line but I gave this a rating of 3 because the ending seems incomplete. Add an epilogue or final chapter to tie-up lose ends and/or supply future info. This appears to be a recurring issue for this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSo sweet and romantic. I couldn't stop reading. My favorite Dorothy Mack story so far. Complex, many - layered characters. Kate and Nicholas seem a mismatch, but are meant for each other.

2.0 out of 5 stars Over compensating and sexist
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThough the author is a good writer, there was an over abundance of description that went too far. I skipped over pages and pages of what society is like, what the actions and traditions are, the reason behind all that, what everybody was wearing and doing and thinking all the time... it was too much, unnecessary and frankly boring. As if I'd never read a Georgette Heyer before and didn't know what regency time was like. It was like the author was trying to educate the reader by shoving all this info down our throats. Condescending and unnecessary. This is not a new and unkown world that the author has to introduce us to.
And also, there were quite a few underlying moments of sexism in the book, in the dialogue, the thinking and the actions of the main characters, but also in the descriptions the author provided to justify the context. I am not naive; I understand perfectly that sexism was a much bigger problem in those days than it is now. But what I don't like is reading a book where the main characters are sexists themselves... it's an ugly quality, so why would I want to read a book with unlikeable characters in it? As unlikely as it is that we'd find many people without sexist mentalities in those days, the fantasy and the magic of this genre is that you read stories about men and women similar to you (hopefully not sexist or racist or any other ist) so that you can identify with them and enjoy their story. Not be repulsed by it. So all in all I didn't like the main characters, the man from the start because he is a sexist pig and the woman though starts strong, by around 70% of the book gives in to the man (despite him still being sexist). I didn't read anymore because, even if it all ends well and they end up learning and growing, they have both gone too far for my respect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEnjoyed this book immensely. It was well written, there were no noticeable typos, and the grammar was mostly excellent. The characters were well developed and very likeable. I realize that in every love story, there is a time when this love is put to the test. In this case, it was when the mistress insinuates that it was she who had picked out the gift of jewelry that Kate’s husband had given her. I feel that in view of Kate’s character, that is, she was a pragmatic, intelligent and mature women, it seemed a very flimsy reason to suddenly decide to end their marriage. It didn’t seem very logical to me. Apart from that, the story was intriguing and very enjoyable. Thank you for a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another enjoyable read.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was well written and again in typical Regency style. Kate and Nicholas' story was excellent, and the characters were endearing. Kate's mother was the typical insipid matriarch, bent on an excellent match and marriage settlement, although not necessarily for Kate, but Lady Langston had no say in the matter as the marriage was arranged by Nicholas's father and Kate's deceased grandfather. Kate's sister and Nicholas's brother were pleasant secondary characters, and of course there was the spiteful jealous mistress of Nicholas's who tries to break up the fledgling marriage.
All in all the read was enjoyable and entertaining, I initially read the book through Kindle Unlimited but I shall be buying my own copy as I think the book worth keeping.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cosy read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA very enjoyable read. The characters are drawn out well and interestingly. I would have given it a five star rating if some portions were not too long.
