The Soldier Brat (Man of Conflict Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,230 ratings

The Soldier Brat … Youngest son of a wealthy English merchant, Septimus Pearce is an utterly spoiled brat whose disgraceful conduct threatens his family’s good name. His father forces him to join the army in an attempt to reform him, but even the disciplines of army life where he sees bloody action in three countries fail to exorcise his nastier character traits. Born agricultural working class in Hampshire and passed the 11+, took a degree that included Economic History, a fascination ever since, taught for ten years, worked with the Police Force in Papua New Guinea for another ten, took a few contracts in the Middle East as well. In between I was a constituency chairman for the SDP, married happily for thirty years with a son and daughter, was widowed fourteen years ago.

I write first of all for me, for my pleasure. That other people seem to enjoy my books adds even more to that satisfaction.

Where I offer a fact, I believe it to be correct, and will be very happy to be told if I am wrong. Where, very frequently, I offer opinion or interpretation, then I generally think it to be not unreasonable, but...

Besides that, I live with my son and daughter, three St Bernards and a neurotic English Mastiff, I collect pressed glass and have a general interest in antiques.

I intend to keep writing. I very much hope people will keep reading.

An amazing read. I enjoyed every page. I put it down only to do what was absolutely necessary this Wednesday past.

A second son to a wealthy merchant wasting his life away, is forced into the Army by his father. A close look and an outstanding story of a new young officer of the British Napoleonic army period.

If you ever enjoyed a Hornblower read, Andrew Wareham writes of that period and even perhaps better!

I was snowed in and desperate and this looked, if not better, not as bad as anything else I could find. It was surprisingly good. Little hints of Lamdin and Cornwall, but still it's own story. Aside from battles and regimental life the novel shows some of the iron bound class divides and societal rules of that age. Often wondered how "Old Blighty" escaped a communist type revolution .

I choose to read Andrew Wareham's books because his in-depth descriptions of the British military in the late 18th century is so thorough. The writing style is easy to follow and the story here is very good. Made me want to read nonstop.

The bad boy, youngest son of a wealthy merchant basically sends him to the army because he's out of control. The brat surprises even himself as he learns soldiering.

This is,a good one for readers of historical/military fiction.

Volume 1 is a Kindle Unlimited freebie, the remaining volumes must be purchased. On principle (or just cheap) I avoid buying books with hooks, but I may have to splurge and buy this set. I enjoyed the literate writing, grammar, spelling, word usage, lack of which can be so distracting in otherwise interesting novels. Mr. Wareham is an historian as well as a talented author (see his bio). Since the hero has advanced to the rank of major in the first book, I'll be curious to see what battlegrounds and plot twists will emerge in the ensuing volumes.

Excellent, I would say, in many ways better than the SHARPE series. Some reviewers have said that the character is "callous" but in many ways, the protagonist is simply a typical man of his class and times there was very little of sympathy for foreigners, the Irish, or what was called the "Lower Orders' in Georgian England, and they were certainly not infected with political correctness! I have read both books in this series and am eagerly awaiting more. A great read by an excellent writer

Andrew Wareham is no Bernard Cornwell, but I did not regret the time reading this book. Too much happened over too many years in too few pages to put much depth in characters or events, and some more background research would have improved the book.

Always intrigued by England's gentlemen officers. Born to a society that indulges the first born and forces the other sons to make do. This is anther story of such, Sept I'm us stands true to the English officer.

An easy read. It kept you in suspense. It was hard to put down.
It reminded me of the Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read

What makes a good read? Quite simply put, when you start to read a book in today's world where the internet, satellite television and social media take total centre stage, you ignore them in favour of old fashioned reading, you know you have found a gem. I have to go now as book two of this series is beckoning me rather seductively.......... enjoy 'Facebook and Twitter' folks, I've better things to do.....

A novel covering all ranks and classes in a class conscious society. It covers the trials of being posted to the sugar islands and all that goes with it. Thank you Andrew , just finished book 1 and to book 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by its cover
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 9, 2015
Much to my surprise I enjoyed this. Looking at the awful title and naff cover image I was expecting it to be awful. But it's a lot grittier than you'd imagine from those. I like the hardness of heart in the character towards people outside of the army. If you read military eye-witness accounts from the 18th or 19th centuries the same bigotry and aloofness comes through quite clearly. I also like the semi-Victorian style of writing which again reflects books written at that time but is not so overdone it makes reading hard work.

The book was a bit epic in scope, swanning all over the world in only a moderately sized novel. Each third of the book could have been made into a novel on its own with a bit more work. But I can't complain about getting lots of adventure for free :) I'll definitely buy the next one and hope it stays at least to the standard of this one.

This is a very good book even for Andrew Wareham whose novels I have always liked. I cannot wait for the next in the series. This novel reflects the actual history as I understand it and although there are other novels with similar stories this one is the most exciting and readable for me.
