Conquest: A thrilling historical novel set during the Norman Conquest (The Medieval Saga Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,258 ratings

The start of a new series by popular historical fiction writer, David Field! Perfect for fans of Conn Iggulden, Robyn Young, Alison Weir and Anthony Riches.

Life in England will never be the same again…

England, 1065

The Saxon kingdom is under threat of invasion at both ends. From the north comes Harald Hardrada of Norway intent on pillage, while across the Channel, Duke William of Normandy is about to enforce his claim to the throne.

Between the two lie the villages and townships defended only by part-time armies maintained by the Earls of Wessex, Mercia and Northumbria, barely united under King Harold Godwineson.

It falls to brave and determined young men like Will Riveracre and Selwyn Astenmede to stand firm against whichever marauding invader reaches them first.

But the initial battle could be the least of their worries as a new king ascends the throne – threatening to annihilate their traditions and customs forever.

Is there any hope for the brave Saxon warriors? Can they adjust to the new way of life?

Or will everything they once knew be changed forever…?

Conquest is the first historical novel in The Medieval Saga Series. This first book is a page-turning account of life in 11th century England before and after the Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings.

'An enthralling blend of fiction and history during the Norman Conquest, full of schemes, secrets, and sharp-drawn characters' - Daniel Colter, author of Brotherhood of Wolves

David was born in post-war Nottingham, and educated at Nottingham High School. After obtaining a Law degree he became a career-long criminal law practitioner and academic, emigrating in 1989 to Australia, where he still lives.

Combining his two great loves of History and the English language he began writing historical novels as an escape from the realities of life in the criminal law, but did not begin to publish them until close to fulltime retirement, when digital publishing offered a viable alternative to literary agencies, print publishers and rejection slips.

Now blessed with all the time in the world, his former hobby has become a fulltime occupation as he enjoys life in rural New South Wales with his wife, sons and grandchildren to keep him firmly grounded in the reality of the contemporary world.

An historical novel, but still a novel. I'm surprised at some opinions here that tear it down. I found the history to be informative and basically true, yet the characters are defined enough to make it a page-turner. An easy read that will not command weeks in a never-ending slog. I found myself looking up the history of it all, filling in blanks of knowledge I already had.

Story describes William of Normandy’s invasion of England, and all the different components of the invasion from the perspective of a English/Saxon peasant. Well written, very entertaining. Highly recommended.

The book is written at a level good for early teens, and not much detail and action beyond that age. I’m sure that was the authors target audience because he does write well.

The plot jumps ahead here and there, which allow several years at a time to be passed over. The dialogue isn’t as helpful or appropriate for the period of the Conquest, which can, at times, grate on my ears. Otherwise, well worth reading on a warm summer beach day.

Colorful and believable backdrop to the Battle of Hastings 1066. I've lined up the sequel to read next. The characters are real and realistically described, allowed to grow as the path William of Normandy cut across the land.

Glad for once to see a history of the Norman conquest that is a) told from the perspective of Anglo Saxon common people and b) extends both well before and after the conquest into William’s “scorched earth” rampage through the north of England, again from the perspective of Anglo saxons who had occasion to interact with both William and Earls of the north. It’s not Bernard Cornwell quality writing, but it’s not lousy either. Certainly refreshing to read something from the “common man’s” perspective vs yet ANOTHER book recounting William’s origin story (and yes, I’ve read every single one - along with Emma’s and Harold’s, and Harold Hardrada’s, etc). Obviously anything from a common fighting man or (gasp) a woman must be imagined but Field does is well. Kudos to him! I’m looking forward to reading the rest of his series.I enjoyed his crossover into Carol McGrath’s “the Swan Wife’s territory” - another favorite series for those interested in the conquest. Thank you for adding to the Conquest lexicon!

In the 11th century the Saxons of England were attacked by bands of Vikings from the north and the Normans from across the English Channel. William of Normandy succeeded in landing in England to claim the English throne. Not knowing or caring about the ways of the English, William was only interested in burning and pillaging the countryside to build numerous castles and fortifications to extend his rule, be crowned King of England and then return to Normandy. Two young Englishmen, Will Riveracre and Selwyn Astenmede, try to protect the residents of the villages from the ruthless soldiers led by William on their way to London.
Conquest, by David Field, tells the story of Will's adventures, learning to speak French in order to teach the Normans something of the English way of living and help the Saxons to come to terms with their new ruler. The author has done much research about medieval life to give the reader a flavor of the times. His characters are real, vibrant and alive. However, historical facts overwhelm Will and Selwyn's story, which is told piecemeal throughout the book.
Thank you to Sapere books for an advance copy of Conquest.

William T Sherman during the US Civil war said "War is hell and I have every intent of making it so" I studied the Civil War but did not experience it.

We are experiencing a war in the Ukraine and I just finished this book about the Norman Conquest. While centuries apart the similarities shown by the Normans and the Russians were striking.

This was the kind of story where I kept saying "one more chapter". I will be looking forward to the next book by the author. I like his style of writing .

A excellent historical story I hadn't had much of a education in this time of Britain's history when at school some 50 years ago other than the basic about King herald getting a arrow in the eye. So it was quite interesting getting some back story to the event around that time. From a perspective of fictional people. Well written by David field like all his books that I have read

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read but lacks depth.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 30, 2022
One of the reviews given here says that the level of this story is aimed at teenage readers, and if it is then that's fine. Although I am certain that there are teenagers who would like some more detail. I have to agree with that review.
It is easy to read but there isn't much of a plot there. It gives an impression of a summary of the story rather than the story itself. It skims through and both, the story itself and the characters are lacking depth. It is difficult to engage either with the fictional story line or the historical background, and you forget about it, when you put the book down. It flows, as it is rather simplistic, so if you just want to kill the time, rather than hope to find your next favourite book, it is ok but, if you are a seasoned reader of historical novels, and you have expectations for a page turner with some more complexity and detail, Sansom or Cornwell it is not.
