About the author

Simon Michael, often referred to as “the British John Grisham”, is the author of the best-selling London 1960s legal crime thrillers featuring his antihero barrister, Charles Holborne. Holborne, born Charlie Horowitz, is a former heavyweight boxer and occasional criminal who was once known by his former East End associates at "the Yiddisher Brick Shithouse". Now he's a barrister, battling prejudice, entitlement and corruption in his West End profession.
Simon was published in the UK and the US in the 1980s and returned to writing when he retired from the law in 2016. The Charles Holborne series, now nine books, have garnered strong reviews for their authenticity and excitement and are under contract for a TV series.
Simon’s tales from the Bar and the plots for his novels are based on his criminal practice, his life and that of his own family. Refugees from the Spanish Inquisition, the Michael family arrived in the Port of London in 1492 and remained in the East End for the next 450 years. Simon believes himself to be the only member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple formerly to have been a council labourer, a van driver and a gardener. Once qualified he practised as a barrister for 37 years, working at the Old Bailey and other criminal courts, defending and prosecuting a wide selection of murderers, armed robbers, con artists and other assorted villainy. The era about which he writes, the 1960s, was the “wild west” of British justice, a time when the Krays, the Richardsons and other violent gangs fought for control of London’s organised crime, and the corrupt Metropolitan Police beat up suspects, twisted evidence and took a share of the criminal proceeds. Simon weaves into his thrillers real events of the time, the cases on which he worked, and his unusual family history.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2020Reading “Corrupted,” the fourth in the Charles Holborne suspense series by Simon Michael, created a sense of “this sounds vaguely familiar.” The story is partially about a scandal that happens with UK politicians in the 1960s. But there have been so many scandals involving British (and American) politicians that I wrote off the sense of familiarity as likely due to something I reads in the newspaper. But when I reached the end of the story, I discovered that Michael based this story on real events and real people, even going so far as to use the real names for some of the characters.
I was right. I had read about it in the newspaper. That’s why it seemed so familiar.
It’s the mid-1960s. Holborne, a World War II hero and a Cambridge graduate, is a highly successful barrister. He works for a law chambers that handles mostly criminal cases, and his success in both defending and prosecuting criminal cases makes him something of a “rain man” for his colleagues. But several of them would still like to see him gone. They don’t like his reputation, and they don’t like the fact that, before he was Charles Holborne, he was Charles Horowitz, an East End Jewish boy who knew a lot of rough-and-tumble days.
A “rent boy” Holborne helped in a previous story shows up at his office with 100 pounds, asking him to take on the case of a 15-year-old boy accused of murder. The usual process is to go to a solicitor first, who then contacts a barrister, so Holborne has to do some quick stepping to get the procedure worked out correctly. The boy charged with the crime seems completely resigned to his fate, and only gradually does Holborne draw him out into explaining what happened.
What Holborne learns is that his ongoing collective nemesis, the gangster Kray Twins, are involved, and they want the boy dead. The boy knows way too much about two members of Parliament, one Conservative and one Labour, and if his story goes public it will bring down the government.
“Corrupted” weaves a story that grabs you by the throat and won’t let go.
Michael is the author of five novels in the Charles Holborne series, with a sixth set to be published in November. He studied law at Kings College, London University and was called to the Bar in 1978. He worked primarily in the field of criminal law until the late 1990s, when he focused his practice on clinical negligence. He began writing in the 1980s and resumed it when he retired from legal practice.
The author’s knowledge of the law informs the courtroom scenes, as it has in the previous novels. Watching the back-and-forth and the brilliant work done by Holborne before the judges is simply captivating. “Corrupted” joins the previous Charles Holborne novels as an outstanding suspense novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2020This book in the series is more gruesome and hard-hitting than the previous ones, but just as good. With each book Charles becomes more interesting, with both flaws and good characteristics. I like the fact that the books are partly autobiographical, and the fact that the author, Simon Michael, is prepared to expose himself in sometimes unflattering light; it makes the character more real. The legal aspects of the story are well presented, and never too dry, which adds to my enjoyment, and the historical aspect always eye-opening. I was born around the time in which these books are set, and I'm always flabbergasted at how things have changed in so many ways, such as the decriminalization of homosexuality, yet are the same in so many others from a societal point of view. For me, the mark of good historical fiction is that the nature of life in the time setting is conveyed realistically, and these novels do that brilliantly while telling good stories at the same time. I have the 5th book waiting for me, and I'm looking forward to it immensely.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2018I was totally engaged in this book from the first page to the last! Simon Michael paints pictures of London in the ‘60s which has the reader living every moment of this story. From the Crays to the law, and encompassing the seedy side of London and its beating heart. I would highly recommend this legal thriller, on its own, or as the forth in this excellent series about lawyer Charles Holborne.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2019I am enjoying these books immensely. Simon Michael has captured sixties era London and the practice of law at the time perfectly. I am awaiting the next book with much anticipation. I highly recommend this series. It's 3 am but I had to finish the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twists and turns as Holborn defends against the Crown, the Krays and the establishment ...
After feeling a little let down by "The Lighterman", not enough to deduct a star though, I am delighted that Simon Michael and his barrister creation Charles Holborn/Charlie Horowitz are back on track; although Holborn's life is anything but on track, but I won't spoil the story. Weaving fact with fiction "Corrupted" is based on the very real and relatively recent events surrounding Lord Robert "Bob" Boothby's relationship with the Kray twins, Tom Driberg and the Sunday Mirror, but unlike a lot of wefts of fact and fiction this is not fantasy fiction, it's fiction, but very credible fiction.
Once again the story mixes courtroom drama, action (albeit less action than in "The Lighterman" but this time it's more believable) and elements of Holborn's complex relationships with his family, his loves, his colleagues and boxing although fortunately these diversions take more of a backseat than in the previous book and are more relevant to the story. Gone too are the flashbacks that were used in "The Lighterman" to tell Holborn/Horowitz's backstory and this book, like the first two, flows better for it. But what remains is a cracking story of twists and turns; of good, bad and very bad in 1960s London as Holborn again takes on a no-win defence case and this time it's not just the Crown and the Krays he's fighting but an establishment that's rotten to the core.
That's four down in a little over a week with one to go, and while this instalment has less focus on the Charles Horowitz/Charles Holborn backstory than the previous book and could work as a one-off do yourself a favour and read the books in order, they are not very long and it will make for a better experience.
PS. I still think these books would make an excellent TV (or perhaps radio) series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Personally I would recommend reading in order to get to know the main ...
Corrupted is the fourth book in the Charles Holborne series. Personally I would recommend reading in order to get to know the main character better but the author does give enough information from previous books so that you can read them out of order if you so wish.
This was such a sombre read due to the nature of the story. Even though the author doesn't go into any great detail with the sex ring, it is still very much an uncomfortable read. Teddy, the young lad that Charles finds himself helping, broke my heart. Even thinking about him now whilst writing my review I can't help but get all emotional.
What I love about this authors books is how he brings the real world into fiction. Everyone knows of the Krays. No doubt they were men at one time that were looked up to and envied. I think this will remind us though of the darker side to the brothers and the atrocities that they were party to.
Corrupted is a dark and enthralling read that kept me turning the pages. Charles as always oozes charm and will certainly appeal to readers. This is a series that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend and if you haven't had the chance to read any yet then I urge you to do so.
