4.4 out of 5 stars 1,392 ratings

A whirlwind romance set in Regency England! Perfect for fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Jane Aiken Hodge and Jane Austen.

Can Chloe bring order to the Montrose family?

Regency England

As a practical doctor’s daughter living in the countryside, Chloe Norris has had little experience among the aristocracy.

But when she leaves her quiet existence to act as a temporary social secretary to the Montrose family, Chloe finds herself caught in a whirlwind of wedding plans, star-crossed lovers and unacknowledged family tensions.

Amid the chaos, Chloe is surprised to find solace in intellectual conversation with the intriguing but aloof
Lord Ivor Montrose, the family’s eldest son.

And as their connection grows stronger, her cool-headed attitude is soon put to the test…

The Courtship of Chloe by Dorothy Mack is a classic Regency romance full of twists and surprises.

I had this author recommended to me by a fellow member of a Facebook readers group. She stated that Dorothy Mack whose work as an author greatly resembled Georgette Heyer's. So, of course, I had to check it out. I am so glad that I did! This was the first of Ms Mack's books I have read but, I assure you, I am off to buy the next one in the series. Her prose is lovely and very true to the Regency time frame. I particularly enjoyed the depth of character development, and the Intriguing unfolding of the storyline. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys well written Regency Romance.

I read many of Dorothy Mack’s books in the 90s. She is in the line of Georgette Heyer, tho not as polished as Heyer’s. This was an enjoyable read. It was fairly slow paced and predictable, but it was fun to see how the author worked everything out in the end.

Wonderful and insightful story of the mannerisms and constraints of a time long gone by. Chloe is a lovely, level-headed daughter of a doctor, brought up to be well educated in Latin and the classics. While her father is off with friends in Scotland, she is brought into the Montrose family as a temporary amanuensis prior to a family wedding. There she finds herself unwillingly embroiled in a family dominated by cold, scheming matriarch. Plus there is the added stress of her growing feelings toward Ivor, the earl, who is very much attracted to her and hoping to end her 5-year engagement to a peripatetic ship's captain. A warm & wonderful romance I have read several times. So happy to see it in Kindle format as the pages of my paperback is yellowed & fragile.

The story was excellent and well written. It was a delight to read a story where the female lead was so logical when she processed the situation around her and that it didn't take away from making the story boring. On the contrary it was refreshing since it made it more realistic. Also, I felt like the scene where the male lead realizes he's in love with the female lead was so romantic but not in a over done way. The way he showed he felt about her was so touching. It definitely put his character on my top five favorite male leads. Additionally its so difficult to find books that are not sexually explicit so kudos to the author for being able to give you all the feels while still keeping it clean and not having to deal with religious undertones in order to enjoy and clean romance. In conclusion, I always rate books with stars but I never write a review so it just goes to show how much I liked the book. If you're a fan of Georgette Heyer's this is definitely up your alley and would recommend you give it a read.

This novel is repeatedly described as a Regency romance, but the cover art is decidedly Victorian. I have not actually read it so I'm guesstimating with three stars.
Maybe it is just poor marketing, but as someone who is interested in historical costume, I was annoyed at the blatant inaccuracy.

There were some bits that felt like a modern woman in a Recency setting, but not to the point of ruining it. I quite enjoyed this one.

While typically reading scifi, police procedurals and biographies and histories centered in the American Revolution, historical romances became a mainstay during "that" year. I've read hundreds of romances since and can safely say that this author has to be the very most gifted writer in this genre and others. I'm grateful to have discovered her and this series and suspect I will reread these books many times going forward, something I never do. These books are lustrous gems of literature.

I always feel ashamed at my enjoyment if these simple and undemanding tales, but really, in such uncertain and distasteful times, the chance to escape into a fun and entertaining story is sheer happiness. Well written, light hearted and kindly. Away with you, rigour of reality! Who wants more truth, we get enough of it on the news. I recommend this book o anyone who needs cheering up

With a firm story line running through, and a practical, lovable heroine, the story is a comfort read. It is not an amusing romp as some of Dorothy Mack's stories are, but the subjects are dealt with with a sensitive flair.

Dorothy Mack has done it again. This was a riveting good story with interesting characters a little bit different to the norm. Not to many accidents in this one, thank goodness, the story progressed without the need to throw too many characters under a carriage.

The characters were married and interesting and the plot had some interesting curves. A very enjoyable book that could have been a touch longer to prolong the enjoyment

4.0 out of 5 stars Superlative elegance of style, stromg lead couple, but one-dimensional characterizations afflict several supporting roles
Reviewed in Italy on January 30, 2020
The sheer verbal bravura and richly satisfying phraseology of this author always strikes me most favorably, but the introspective finesse of the lead characters contrasts with the repetitive, knee-jerk reactions attributed to some of the supporting cast.
