Feinted Love (Crimes of the Heart Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 403 ratings

One hot Seattle summer. A half-baked revenge plot. A gambit for love.

Arnie

One minute I’m minding my own business enjoying the sunshine, next I’m wearing my iced coffee. Of course, the perpetrator is THE guy I’ve never forgotten—it seems though that he’s forgotten me.

I’m awkward and generally have no clue what I’m doing, but this time Tobias isn’t brushing me off.

Tobias

I've never forgotten Arnie, or the night we had together. When I, er, run into him again, I realize want to get to know him—as more than a friend.

I may come from a wealthy family and I know money can’t buy happiness. But brash, socially awkward Arnie Ferguson makes me think happiness is possible when you let your heart choose.

nerd/geek, comedic elements, awkward, rich/poor, reunited, revenge-sort of, medium heat, shy lover, on the spectrum, loyal to a fault.

Feinted Love is a first person, dual POV, following Arnie Ferguson and Tobias Barrington as they do their best to awkwardly fall in love. Standalone, No cliffhanger, HEA guaranteed. Heat level, 3+.

opposites, awkward love, rich/poor, drama queen, comedic elements, second chance, new adult

About the Author

Author/imaginator & photographer (also rare Pacific Northwest Native), Elle grew up in Seattle, WA., with the Cascade Mountain range to the east and Olympics to the west.

Elle has between three and five cats, depending on who's counting. She's lived in four states, London England, and Hong Kong; always knows what time it is, and has little problem finding parking even in the most difficult places.

Elle's new series Accidental Roots is set in the Skagit Valley of Western Washington and made its debut spring of 2017. Writing has always been a passion but not something she was able to take seriously until recently. Now her head is full of ideas and not enough time in each day.

Broken, broody, mysterious, swoony, inclusive; those are my tropes.

It’s my grandmother’s fault! Alice Lee bribed me to read with a Nancy Drew box set—and changed my life forever.

Love at first binge read.

By the time high school rolled around I’d already discovered romantic suspense and gothic romance, and I’ve never looked back. What can I say? My love of mystery and suspense started early and runs deep.

Is there anything better than a character who by the end of the story manages to redeem/heal themselves enough to fall in love? No, there isn’t.

Fast forward to 2017 when, with a shaky finger, I pressed the Publish button for the first time. I’ve never regretted it. I love writing and telling stories that others enjoy, it’s a dream come true.

What else? I love both cats and dogs. Star Wars and Star Trek. Pineapple on pizza, and have a cribbage habit my husband encourages. We live in a log cabin near Hood Canal in Washington State, if the sky is clear at night the milky way is visible. But most often I’m inside devouring yet another book!

I love this new series from Elle Keaton! She is a master of romantic suspense and it was fun to see a new side to her writing. Arnie and Tobias were amazing characters with great personalities and the best HEA. I love how crazy and unique Arnie is! He is one of my favorite characters that Elle has ever created! I felt so bad for Tobias after seeing all the crap he has had to deal with from his parents but I was so happy when he finally was able to break free of their controlling ways. Even though their relationship started on a shady premise, I love that they were able to realize how much they wanted a real relationship with each other. I am so excited to read the next book in this series and can't wait to see what else is going to happen with these amazing characters. As with all of Elle Keaton's books, this was so well written with fantastic characters. I received an ARC for an honest and fair review.

Feinted Love is a second chance romance … sort of. Arnie and Tobias hook up at a wild college party at Tobias’ mansion, with Arnie losing his virginity. They get abruptly separated, though, when the party is broken up and then don’t see each other again for seven years. Arnie draws the conclusion that Tobias is an entitled rich boy who just used Arnie and then tossed him aside, and he seriously regrets haven’t given up his virginity for him.

So when Tobias wanders into the cafe where Arnie works, Arnie decides he wants revenge … of some sort. You can tell he’s conflicted because he clearly still has feelings for Tobias but is ashamed of himself for having those feelings. As the story plays out, we see that Tobias is in fact a really sweet, kind-hearted guy, far from the assumptions Arnie has drawn, and Arnie begins to realize it too. Tobias isn’t beneath a bit of deception though, as he enlists his best friend Charley to pose as his fake boyfriend to make Arnie jealous. Which then prompts Arnie to get his best friend Duff to try to steal Charley’s attention away from Tobias. It’s all a bit convoluted and some of the backstories aren’t made clear - for example, Charley and Duff’s. I assume that’s because they’ll be the subject of later series books. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next book.

The autistic traits were mostly relatable, and felt pretty accurate overall (the word autism is never actually used though). I wish it’d gone a little further into how (minor spoiler, if that) /Arnie went from blaming himself/his autism for his dad leaving to suddenly near the end saying confidently that he knows his dad is just a bad person who would have left anyway./ Autistic people may be hard to understand, but we do have an internal logic that Arnie didn’t seem to really have given those moments that felt out of place with his established character.
On the whole, more depth would have been nice—the chapters were choppy and the pacing was erratic, somehow both fast and slow; and then there were a few transitions that skipped right over the important bits. Like how did that conversation between the two MCs conclude and switch to where the next chapter picks up?? Kind of frustrating. I did t really feel chemistry either, and the revenge plot was less than paper thin and didn’t even theoretically get off the ground, would have made more sense to take it out altogether. The bff-drama was a very clear setup for the next book where I’m sure they get together. It’s like an overly nice story where the characters love each other because they have to and are a good fit but it’s hard to root for them because a) at no point was it even a possibility that they wouldn’t get together and 2) I didn’t feel their feelings at all. I’m a sucker for autistic rep tho.

Arnie is a hoot. Tobias is a gem. And, together, they are a wonderful couple! This is a full-length, low angst romance featuring two men in their mid-twenties finding their way to post-college adulthood.

I am a big fan of this author, especially her romantic suspense! I highly recommend this book and can see myself reading it again.

    Possible spoilers follow...

I much prefer older characters so I passed on this book for a long time, but I am very happy I read it! I didn't like Arnie at first and his plan almost made me not finish, but I as hooked! I have read thousands of romances and I love when an author can surprise me and these characters and this book surprised and delighted me! When expecting Arnie to do one thing, he did the opposite, and when expecting a big office blow up to be a major plot device, it didn't happen at all. I came to root for Arnie, laugh at his thoughts, and only occasionally roll my eyes at him. I hope readers get more Arnie and Tobias in the rest of the series which I assume is about their friends, all good characters.

    3.75 stars rounded to 4.

Elle Keaton is one of my go-to authors, so even though I am not a New Adult romance reader (like, nononono), I knew I’d be reading this. And as usual, I wasn’t disappointed. Still not a fan of the subgenre, but Tobias and especially Arnie dragged me in.

For one thing, I’m unabashedly a fan of a good rom-com couple, and this book has that in spades. Tobias is perfect as the semi-straight man - the Bill Pullman, if you will - to Arnie’s Sandra Bullock (Yes, I’m a fan of While You Were Sleeping - and??). The book had a slow start for me, but the banter flared up whenever Tobias and Arnie were together. Enough that I wish there had been more of that - more of the rom-com aspect - and less of the New Adult vibe overall. Also, Arnie is the quintessential rom-com lead, and I would have loved to see more of his bumbling-through-life moments.

It’s like watching second-tier Sandra Bullock movies - you know it’s gonna supply you with everything you want, but you really wish they’d let her comedic talents loose a bit more.

This stand-alone is the first in the Crimes of the Heart series. Great way to start; I can't wait to read Duff's story.

Loved this book! I enjoyed a lot Arnie's cuteness in his "revenge", and Tobias acceptance of everything, they were such a lovely couple! Their story was so wonderful and easy to read in spite the few angst situations that just made me happy. Just a perfect reading to spend a nice time!

This is a sweet, very low drama second chances, enemies-to-lovers style novel that is very different to Elle Keaton's usual work.

I loved how low drama it was, and I'm off to read book 2.
