Cruel Candy (Cozy Corgi Mysteries Book 1) Kindle Edition
Winifred Page and her corgi, Watson, move to Estes Park to hit the Reset button on life. Fred is about to open her dream bookshop, and the only challenges she anticipates are adjusting to small-town life, tourists, and living close to her loveable mother, Phyllis, and hippy stepfather, Barry.
When Fred steps into her soon-to-be-bookshop for the first time, she expects dust bunnies and spiders… not the dead body in the upstairs kitchen. The local police have an easy suspect—Barry.
Determined to prove quirky Barry innocent of murder, Fred puts on her detective hat, and with Watson by her side, she explores her new town and gets acquainted with her fellow shopkeepers. Could one of her friendly neighbors be the real culprit? And what would be the motive for killing the owner of the Sinful Bites candy store? The secrets Fred discover put her at odds with the local police sergeant and threaten her cozy future in Estes.
With snow falling outside, all Fred wants to do is curl up by the fire with a good book and Watson snuggled at her feet. But before she can begin her new life and put her plans for her bookshop into action, Fred and Watson have a mystery to solve…

About the author

Bio: Reading the Cozy Corgi series is pretty much all you need to know about Mildred. In real life, this author is obsessed with everything they writes about: Corgis, Books, Cozy Mountain Towns, and Baked Goods. They're not obsessed with murder, however. At least not at their own hands (nor paid for… no contract killing here). But since childhood, starting with Nancy Drew, trying to figure out who-dun-it has played a formative role in their personality. Having Fred and Watson stroll into their mind was a touch of kismet.

Fred is feisty, but her sidekick corgy, Watson steals the show. He has a nose for the best treats on Main Street and seems to know who of Fred’s fellow store owners will give up the juiciest gossip. Investigating a murder may not be the most polite way to meet your neighbors, but it is a wonderful way to introduce the reader to the backdrop of storefronts and the rich vibrant “characters” that inhabit Estes Park, Colorado. Fred’s family is quirky and colorful and adds just the right amount of seasoning to her character, both grounding her and motivating her. This is a classic small-town cozy that sets the tone for the series of books to come.
I received a complimentary evaluation copy of this book from the author. All opinions and insights are my own.
CRUEL CANDY begins with Fred (Winifred Page) and Watson her four leg, furry companion arriving in the small mountain town of Estes Park, Colorado ready to push the Reset Button on her life. Before you begin the story, you realize how important Watson is to Fred and how closely she involves him in her internal dialogs and her verbal conversations with the smart and cute little guy.
Leaving a life of betrayal and disappointment behind in Kansas City, Fred plans to create a cozy bookstore filled with actual books, comfy chairs for reading and a warm and welcoming ambience. Not a stranger to the town, her mother and step father own a good portion of the downtown properties. Fred’s designated bookstore was the former Heads and Tails a taxidermy store. Sandwiched between Sinful Bites, offering delectable pastries, chocolates, and assorted candies; and the Healthy Delights bakery offering sugar-free, healthy treats. Meeting the two highly different sisters who own the bakeries was confusing and dismaying to Fred.
Finally, as evening falls, Fred and Watson navigate their way to Fred’s mother’s home. Pausing, Fred is reminded how vibrant the stars appear in the mountains, overlooking rocky peaks and massive forests. Reflecting on the calming beauty, the scent of pine, earth, and snow, Fred begins to feel that the abrupt move was right. This was good, so very good.
Unable to sleep, Fred wakes early the next morning to begin her new life. With Watson at her side she enters the premises of her store ready to explore and plot the layout of the bookstore. Despite Watson finding a feather and Fred bravely opening a deep freezer finding a large frozen owl, they climb the stairs to the second floor, a compact apartment. Watson is happy to find a selection of scattered cellophane wrapped candies. Fred quickly checks for chocolate and realizing they are licorice, allows him one as they push into the kitchen. The counter is covered with supplies and baking equipment. As Watson begins a low dangerous growl, shoulders drooped down, his back rigid, and rump in the air, showing his fangs, Fred cautiously follows him. She finds a rolling pin on the floor, one end stained dark red. A body lays behind the counter in a pool of blood. This is Fred’s welcome to her new bookstore and the beginning of a fascinating mystery.
With Watson as her steadfast companion, Fred meets the handsome police Sargent in charge of the case, an interesting edibles vendor and a curious and efficient park ranger, as she looks for clues. Fred uses her love of murder mysteries, instructions from her late police Detective father, as well as, common sense and courage to solve this murder mystery.
There is an engaging group of relatives, and townspeople to offer humor, decorating ideas, elbow grease, and recipes to make Fred and Watson feel at home even before her moving van arrives.
I found myself cheering for Fred, as she is so low key, adores Watson, has a little snark, and is convinced to push that Reset Button. One book into the series and I am eagerly looking forward to the next mystery.
Winifred, or Fred, has just moved to town along with her corgi, Watson. She has had a few problems in her life recently and is looking forward to starting over by opening a bookshop in town. Her mother and step-father live in town and actually own the building that she plans to open her bookshop in. When she introduces herself to the store owner next door, she doesn't get the reaction that she hopes for. That is just the start of her trouble since she will soon find a body inside the building she plans to open her store in.
I thought that the mystery in this cozy was very well done. I had no idea who the culprit was and I had a great time going along with Fred and Watson as they met the other shopowners. The story went in a couple of directions that I didn't see coming which added to the appeal. I loved the small-town setting and quirky characters. Fred and Watson made a great team!
This was the first time that I have had the chance to listen to Angie Hickman's narration and I was impressed. She did a great job with all of the character's voices and was able to bring the story to life. She used a very pleasant voice and I thought that the pacing was very well done. I would definitely listen to her narration work again in the future.
I would recommend this book to others. This was a fun little cozy that was able to keep me guessing. I definitely plan to read more this series very soon.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading others in this series.
The narrator’s voice was slightly annoying. I found it a bit high pitched
Overall I would recommend this book.

Cozy Corgi Mysteries was everything I was hoping for. It had flair bringing the characters in this story to life.
Newly resident of the quaint little town Estes Park, Fred is planning on opening up a bookstore. Not just any old bookstore, she has big plans for her Cozy Corgi Mysteries. Her side kick and companion, Watson is actually a Corgi. Yep, he’s a dog and Fred’s a woman. Confused? Read on.
Fred short for Winifred has left her old life behind. We learn throughout the story about exactly what kind of life she left behind. It’s about what you’d expect for a thirty something woman. I don’t think it’s possible to get to that age without having some history behind you.
It soon becomes clear that Fred is an attractive, intelligent woman who spikes the interest of Sergeant Wexler. She is by no means a wallflower, but by God, I thought I was going to combust if she didn’t grab that sexy man and snog the face off of him. Obviously being reserved is a talent I haven’t yet mastered.
Fred and Watson find themselves with a mystery that they would like to solve. Fred’s stepdad is under suspicion for a heinous crime. It’s not too long into the story where we learn Fred is more than just an beautiful, intelligent book Corgi loving woman. She has a case to solve and no one is telling her she can’t investigate. With Watson by her side anything is possible.
This book was such an interesting and fun read, I am looking forward to more from Cosy Corgi Mysteries.

by Mildred Abbott
Winifred Page, or Fred as she is known to family and friends, was about to begin a new life. She has driven to the town of Estes Park in Colorado with her best friend Watson, a cute corgi. Grandma had left Fred a taxidermy shop, Heads and Tails, which she planned to turn into Cozy Corgi, a bright happy bookshop, while she also lived in her new home, Grandma’s cottage. It was all so very exciting to Fred. This is a truly entertaining mystery. I bought this book from Amazon Australia and the review is entirely my own. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

In terms of the characters, I believe any reader would be hard-pressed not to love Fred and Winston; they are just so likeable, and Winston sounds adorable. However, it isn’t just the main characters that are excellent, the secondary characters are also delightful - I especially liked the attractive sounding detective, Branson Wexler.
As for the actual mystery, I already kind of knew who the killer was as book two, 'Traitorous Toys' briefly mentioned this case. However, that fact didn't ruin the story for me, and I still loved following Fred and her investigation.
Finally, in terms of the narration, Angie Hickman did a decent job bringing the story to life. It took some time to get used to her style, but there was enough character differentiation in her voices to tell who was who.
