CRY HAVOC: A Dark Epic Fantasy (Jack Frey - Demon Fighter Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 623 ratings

When the demons come, will you stand and fight or run and die?

Seven hundred years ago, demons rose out of the darkness and conquered all who tried to stand before them. Only the island nation of Abios remained free, protected by the warrior priests known as the Black Dogs.

Now, a demon fleet stands poised to invade humankind's last bastion and new warriors must be found.

Jack Frey, a street thief, is no one’s idea of a hero. He certainly didn’t ask to be thrust onto the front-line of a centuries-old struggle — but war doesn’t care who it calls to fight.

Across the Angel Sea, Lin, enslaved by the demons, has never seen a sunrise but she knows how to survive no matter what hell comes her way.

Little do they know humankind's fate lies in both their hands.

Can these unlikely warriors stop the demon hordes before all is lost?

Cry Havoc is the epic first book in the Jack Frey, Demon Hunter dark fantasy series. If you like impossible odds, breakneck battles, and shocking twists, then you’ll love Mike Morris’ grim tales.

Very enjoyable dark fantasy book. I would describe it as a late medieval Vampire Earth combined with Blood Song. The coming of age portion was handled very well with nicely timed jumps forward in time. The world itself wasn't given great detail, but the day to day lives of the people living in the Nostros' land was nicely detailed. The bad guys in this book are indeed bad. There were many great action sequences and an awful lot of death and destruction throughout.

My one minor complaint about the book: There were quite a few typo's and issues with grammar. This didn't detract from the story. But it could use an updated version to resolve these issues.

Bottom line, if you like a good Dark Fantasy action novel then this is a great book. I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed reading the book quite a bit. The typos were frustrating at times, but didn’t really inhibit understanding. It’s a quick read and entertaining, but don’t go into it thinking you’re reading Sanderson or other established authors with essentially fantasy canon under their belts. That being said, it was worth the read and I also look forward to the next one. Not every work has to be a masterpiece to be entertaining and worthwhile.

This book is an excellent start to a fantasy series, the characters felt very real, and it was never certain as to what their fate would be, in terms of "world-building" i was left a bit wanting, however i didn't feel like that took away from the story, it is just something that i felt could be added into the next book, Morris makes you care about the characters he wrote about, which is a very difficult task, i would ask him to make us care about the world he is writing about in the same manner. Overall am very happy to have purchased the book and will look forward to the next installment

This is definitely not the worst thing I’ve read. I was expecting—or rather hoping for a little more. The action is well crafted, but the rest of it just lacked the kind of depth I would like to see when an author is world-building. I don’t think there’s a real problem with the book, I would just personally like to pick up something in the genre that wasn’t written for 12 year olds. There were a few weird typos on my kindle edition, but nothing too bad. If you want a quick, fun read you could do worse. But I won’t be reading the rest of the series.

This book doesn't break any new ground but it does exactly what it set out to do. The pace is very quick, the action quite brutal, and the characters are pretty likeable, although a little bland. Overall a good read.

The Black Dogs! Lin, Jack! Was very pleasantly surprised by the detail that went into the training of the Dogs, the fight scenes, and the psychological impact of people knowing nothing but slavery at the hands of the Nostros. The main character is a total badass! I’m very much looking forward to more from Mr Morris.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read and a gripping tale of adventure

I have enjoyed reading this book, It is gripping and establishes the main character - Jack. However, it always builds other personas as the story unravels. Lin to be becomes formidable, you can begin to relate to her suffering and understand her loss. There are sections missing about when Jack gets back to the black dogs after he went back to his hometown and what Brendan had done when he was asked to leave Jack by the priests. Regardless of this I found it gripping and could not put the kindle down.

I chose this book after reading and really enjoying 'He Who Fights' by Mil Morris and was not disappointed. I read the whole book in little over say as I was drawn into the world on Jack Frey. The engaging story and fantastic descriptions had be wanting to read more. I am a huge fan of Terry Goodkind and George RR Martin and if you are looking for an easy to read alternative then Mike Morris is a great option

Good character development. Plenty of action. A good twist on Vampire horror.
(There are a few typo errors). I believe fans of fantasy and horror should enjoy this first book in the series.
