Cunningham: The Greatest Admiral Since Nelson (Leading the Modern Royal Navy) Kindle Edition
Perfect for people who enjoy biographies of Chester W. Nimitz, Isoroku Yamamoto or other legendary World War Two admirals.
‘In the Eastern Mediterranean we found in Admiral Andrew Cunningham an officer of the highest qualities and dauntless courage.’ Winston S. Churchill, The Second World War
After serving in the Boer War and World War One with distinction, Andrew Browne Cunningham, popularly known as ABC, served as Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet when the outlook for British forces looked bleakest at the start of the Second World War.
A brilliant naval tactician, Cunningham led his fleet to smash the Italian Navy at Taranto, the first completely all-aircraft naval attack in history, and later at Cape Matapan. He successfully evacuated the army from Greece and later from Crete and worked tirelessly to keep supply lines to besieged Allied forces in Malta and Tobruk open. As the tide of the war began to turn he directed naval support for Eisenhower's landings in North Africa and Italy.
From 1943, ABC became First Sea Lord and professional head of the Royal Navy, overseeing the final defeat of Nazi Germany’s naval forces and assisting with setting the strategy for defeating the Japanese in the Far East.
Drawing information from Cunningham’s personal letters and wartime diaries has allowed John Winton to provide vivid insight into all of this naval leader’s merits and flaws. Additional material from official sources and contemporary memoirs gives a thorough and unique perspective of the Second World War at sea.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2024The work does a great job of not just recounting Cunningham’s life, but also how he interacted with others. Although not a primary source in and of itself, the author presents very good “guideposts” on where to find said sources. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Admiral - warts and all
This is an excellently researched and detailed biography of one of our greatest Admirals. However it is not merely praise of a sanctified image. The author is well aware not only of the strengths, but also of the failings of his subject and so we are presented with a full picture of the man. It includes a wealth of anecdotes which show different aspects of the man and so allow us to form a fuller picture of who he was. Don't read this book if you just want to be told how great Cunningham was. Read it if you really want to discover who he was - warts and all. That is not to deny his greatness, but simply to recognise those things with which he struggled. This book is a great achievement and an excellent testimonial to a very great seaman and commander.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of RN in WWII Mediterranean
It gave a rounded portrait of a great admiral showing his strengths and weaknesses in full. Since he was one of the major active leaders in the world war it also gives a full detailed account of the strengths and failings of the men and women involved and an insight into UK relations with the USA and France. By focussing on one area of this conflict it is easy to understand and makes the reader aware of the complexities of managing lots of different ships and new technologies. He had little personal life but that is sensitively covered as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely facinating
Book does Justice to the legacy of Admirals in the Royal Navy like Nelson and Fisher though of a later era.
