She enjoyed life as a demon’s pet. Until the cries of an innocent tore her world asunder…

Emma Case is freaking out. Being surrounded by monsters is risky enough without breaking the rules, but when the soft-hearted girl hears a pup in distress, she can’t resist trespassing on forbidden ground. And after discovering the unfortunate creature is a wolf-shifter, she’s stunned when the child’s pack accuses her of the crime and abducts her for interrogation.

Tortured for information she doesn’t have, Emma pleads desperately for her handsome tormenter to believe her. Yet as the naïve young woman tumbles deeper into the realm of supernatural intrigue, she unexpectedly manifests frightening powers she has no idea how to control.

Will Emma’s hidden heritage prove a blessing or a bane?

Cursed Demon is the second standalone book in the character-driven Creatures of the Otherworld urban fantasy series. If you like sassy heroines, laugh-out-loud humour, and white-knuckle thrills, then you’ll love Brogan Thomas’s action-packed tale.

Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐️

"Emma was a force onto herself. I loved her journey, and the way the author wove the storyline to that of Cursed Wolf was both a surprise and a wonderful delight as each new facet unfolded." Goodreads review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐️

"I thought that Forrest's story (Cursed Wolf) was exceptional but Brogan Thomas has surpassed it with Emma and John's story. The scenes were rich, the storyline was excellent and the characters were amazing. I enjoyed every page and couldn't put it down. I can't wait to see where she takes us next." BookBub review

Brogan lives in Ireland with her husband and their eleven furry children: five furry minions of darkness (aka the cats), four hellhounds (the dogs), and two traditional unicorns (fat, hairy Irish cobs).

In 2019 she decided to embrace her craziness by writing about the imaginary people that live in her head. Her first love is her number-one favourite furry child Bob the cob, then reading. When not reading or writing, she can be found knee-deep in horse poo and fur while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

The flurry of events in the opening sequence was fast paced and intense. It also set the tone of the storyline. The characters were fascinating. The emotionally driven story full of darkness and suspense was captivating. I enjoyed every second of this book. I cannot wait to read the next book.

Really good. Very emotional. Should have come with a little bit of a trigger warning.

So here is mine - if being a nice girl got you nowhere fast - read this book. It will hurt for a little bit, but the ending pulls everything together and is worth it.

Growing up as a hybrid human pet to a demon, Emma lived day-to-day just blending into the background without bringing attention to herself. Then one day she decides to save a shifter child and her life forever changes. The author brilliantly weaves a story full of love, heartache, friendship, betrayal, pain, and healing. And intermingled throughout it all is humor and a determination to make the world a better place. Emma’s story pulls you in and doesn’t let you go until the very end. A must read.

Another fantastic story from Brogan! I love the characters and story. I liked how the heroine basically goes from innocent to completely bada$$ saving animals and people out of the goodness of her heart. Loads of action, intrigue and a fun little horse named Bob! Absolutely brilliant writing! Keep up the great work.

Emma is owned by Arlo, a demon - she's a demon's pet. Until she does a good deed & gets brutally tortured by a hellhound for it.

Arlo's training & conditioning of her, plus Emma's naivete & natural empathy cause her not only a lot of confusion but a lot of suffering. It's frustrating, but understandable to an extent, that she tends to trust & comply where she shouldn't.

After Emma's fall from Arlo's favor, it's baffling as to why he allowed John's 2 guards, especially within his own house. I found it unbelievable, even after finishing the book & having all the information.

The 1st half of this story is kind of brutal, similar to (but not quite as bad as) the 1st book - this world is like a paranormal Gotham in some ways - but thankfully, the second half is about how she learns to deal with it all in a positive, constructive way & becomes a force for good. It has a superhero flavor that I enjoyed.

The progression of Emma's relationship with John is actually fairly well supported & manages to fairly effectively negate the anticipated Stockholm Syndrome complaints - very much to my surprise - so I just have to acknowledge the fact that I don't like John for being a violent, unthinking brute who, in antithetical contrast to Emma's naively looking for the good in people, sees bad in everyone & presumes guilt over innocence.

But I'll credit the author that she at least successfully cracked a door open for his contrition, atonement & redemption. We see Emma & John learn to trust more... accurately... than in the past.

So, like book 1, if you can handle some brutality & language, there's a decently engaging story in here

*CONTENT: as a movie, this would be rated R.
-Possible triggers include some glimpses of torture, threats of rape, human trafficking,
-Shifting back to human form is normally naked, secular attitudes toward intimacy with some explicit talk but no peeping tom porn scenes,
-Language is still worse than normal but at least the f-bombs have gone down to 4 dozen here &
-Use of the Lord's Name trivially/disrespectfully (ie in vain) though none as curses, fwiw

Love this book and the world she created. I want more! At first I was concerned as the FMC has the potential to be weak and whiney but the writer rides the line and she keeps strength shining through! It kept me hooked as I really dislike whiney or too weak of an FMC. And the troublesome dynamics are written so well. The world and characters have depth and destination and there is an air of keep you guessing that I love in a good plot! Thank you!

NEEDS A TRIGGER WARNING! I NEVER would have picked up this book had there been a trigger warning. I managed to read the entire book. I had nightmares. I had ... negative thoughts and feelings. It wasn't nice, and I did NOT deserve that when all I was looking for was an interesting paranormal romance. That being said, I enjoyed the author's writing style, and I was definitely pulled into the story despite wanting to stop reading. I might try another book by the author, but I'm not sure it will be anytime soon. And I will definitely make sure to read the reviews first to make sure I don't have another horrible flashback. PTSD sucks. I really wish I would have noticed the reviews mentioning a trigger warning was needed / not included by the author. (I'm kind of jealous. It must be nice to not even need to think about giving others a trigger warning because nothing bad has happened in your life to make you realize other people might need one. *sigh*)

And, POTENTIAL SPOILER, seeing the main character forgive and fall in love with her torturer was ... disgusting. The author did an excellent job of making me hate him. I found the ending both wonderful (her becoming a strong independent woman who uses her abilities to help other people in desperate situations - that would have been enjoyable to see more examples of this), but the relationship (if you can call horrible sadistic torture and then 18 years of avoidance a relationship) unrealistic and disgusting.

I loved it, looking forward to starting the next book I'm this series.

While the first book was a solid 4 star read for me, this one got all the star.
The author tweaker her writing a little bit, I didn't "only" love the story and the heroine, I also could completely connect to the feelings and was crying while reading- which is "my" 5 star criterion.

This is a fantastic second book for a new writer (fyi. The first was equally delish). I totally love the characters....love the story and love the endings!
I love how difficult these two start was. I like that she found her strength before they got together and I like that he found his weakness too!
I also love that the author doesn't waste 10 pages every 20 in sex scenes that a good story doesn't need!
Thank you Brogan for deciding to pick up a pen!
