Nicola Hudson loves books: reading them, talking about them...and writing them! She comes from Birmingham, England but has a love of most things American (including Red Vines, Vegas and the word y'all).

Nicola has always been an avid reader but, after somehow stumbling her way into New Adult, she has become addicted to the category. After reading Hopeless by Colleen Hoover and Easy by Tammara Webber, Nicola could no longer fight the urge to pick up a pen (well, switch on her laptop) and start writing. Several months later, her first novel CURVE was released.

Nicola's second novel, HEART, releases in November 2014. The third, and final, novel in the Define series, Fault, will be released in Autumn 2016.

The subject matter was handled very well and I appreciated that. I loved the characters so much. Cass and Neve are great bff's and Flynn was a great boyfriend, I'm so glad that Rob was dealt that ruling and sentence. Neve was a terrific friend to Cass and wow Cass went through so much and she had to go through lots of feelings but I'm so happy she was able to become stronger and that her mum and her were able to bond and build a better relationship over this unfortunate circumstance. Every woman and girl should read this book.

This was a lovely book. So very real and honestly written. Dealt with some difficult subject matter that was well handled and was nicely balanced by the slow butterflies-in-the-belly build of Cass and Flynn's relationship.

❝Rob was with you for a bet. ❞

I can’t imagine anything more crushing to a seventeen-year-old girl than to hear those words.

Rob is the school’s super-stud and has girls fawning all over him left and right and I can only imagine Cass’ delight to discover that he actually wants to go on a date with her! SQUEEEEEEE!!!! Yeah, sounds awesome, until his “real” persona breaches the surface and she realizes that Rob is actually a super-sleaze bucket. Never fear! Because Cass has an awesome support system to help her pick up the pieces and thank goodness for Flynn – she has always seen him as an older brother type, but to my delight, a sweet romance begins to bud between the pair.

After the horror and humiliation of scoring a date with the handsome Rob only because of a bet, Cass returns to her normal routine, but Rob isn’t having it, he is determined to finish what he started. What began as a joke turns into an obsession and the target is Cass. Although Rob’s attention seems a little “off,” she thinks he is harmless, never thinking that the devil lurks behind that handsome exterior… until the unthinkable happens. Cass’ life is forever changed and she retreats from everything and everyone that previously brought her joy. Once again, Flynn is her strength and works tirelessly to once again feel confident and safe.

Although Cass’ vicious sexual assault is ever present in CURVE, it isn’t necessarily the focal point of the story. Curve is about innocence lost, healing and finding love in the most unlikely of places. Author Nicola Hudson does a fantastic job at “showing” rather than “telling” and I think showing is so much more powerful, and lends a hand to creating multi-dimensional characters, than telling. The relationship that transpires between the very innocent and “never been kissed” Cass and the college-aged Flynn was sweet and refreshing and sometimes pretty hot!

❝Every millimetre of me craves his touch. As the fingertips on one hand follow the lace edging of my bra, causing goosebumps to follow in their wake, his other hand slowly strokes downwards. Past the indent of my belly button, past the curve of my tummy, under the elastic of my knickers. My left hand is enmeshed in his dark hair, my nails grazing his scalp, as he kisses the line of my neck, branding me with the heat of his mouth. My whole body is on fire and I can feel a release just out of reach when his mouth stops and leaves my neck naked.❞

CURVE is labeled on many shelves as a “young- adult” novel, but I would say 18+ due to sexual content and adult themes. Any way you slice it, CURVE is a winner in my book and I enjoyed every minute of it. Lovers of New-Adult romance and drama will likely love it too – you can bet I will be checking out more of what this author has to offer!

Imagine you’re 17, you’ve never been kissed, never had any boy pay you much attention then suddenly the hunky rugby player at school is asking you to dance at the Christmas disco. You’re on cloud nine; this is the best night of your life! Then you find out he had ulterior motives, he only asked you for a bet. You would be devastated, humiliated and never want to show your face at school again.

Well this is what Cass is facing when the story starts, and my heart went out to her straight away. Luckily she has her best friend Neve to console her, and also her very own knight in shining armour in the form of Flynn, Neve’s older brother.

Before that night, Cass had never taken much notice of Flynn. Now, she is viewing him in a different light. Feeling like a spare part in the home she shares with her mum, step dad and young sister, Cass spends a lot of time at Neve’s house, and after staying up one night talking to Flynn she realises that she likes him. A lot. Unfortunately for Cass, Rob (the hunk) isn’t too happy that he lost the bet, and he’s not going to walk away quietly.

The story is everything I love about mature YA/NA stories. Those butterfly feelings you get at the start of something new, the excitement of your first love, and feeling that nothing will ever come between you. Flynn evokes all of these feeling in Cass, feelings she’s never had before and she embraces it all. I loved Cass, she was so sweet. She lacked the confidence to believe that a boy would find her attractive but when she spends time with Flynn she started to blossom, I could feel her positively glowing! And as for Flynn, I fell in love with him big time! The way he was so gentle and patient with Cass, not wanting to rush her into anything made my heart melt. He knew just what Cass needed, when to say the right thing, when to take a step back, and when to step up. The little things they did together were so sweet, especially the scene in the park. I’ll never look at a packet of Minstrels the same way again!

I don’t want to spoil this story for you by saying too much, but there is some… how shall I say… unpleasantness for Cass and Flynn to deal with, and it threatens to tear them apart. My heart broke for the pair of them, I wanted to reach into the book and give Cass a hug and to tell Flynn to hang in there. I was rooting for them to overcome the obstacles because they were perfect for each other.

This was a great debut from Nicola Hudson, and I’m very happy to learn that she is writing a second book about Neve and Jake (Flynn’s friend). I’ve added Heart to my ‘to-read’ list and I’m secretly hoping there’s more of Cass and Flynn in there too!

I didn't know anything about this book or author when I purchased this book, she is attending a book signing next month and I am making my way through at least one book of each of the attending authors, but I am so pleased that I have found her!!!

I read this book in almost one sitting, I could not put it down and wanted to know how it would end.

The book does touch upon quite a sensitive subject, but it is handled so well. You feel like you are right there in the book, experiencing it too and facing the harsh realities of every aspect of Cass' plight. But that's not to say the book is depressing and all doom and gloom, there is the classic love story through out and there are strong supporting characters.

The best way to describe this book is heartbreakingly beautiful and I cannot recommend it enough.

    This is stunning debut novel.

I found 17 year old Cass very easy to connect to. She's in her final year of school and thinking about university. She's not into partying and socialising. She's happy to work at her part time job, finish her home work and spend time with her best friend Neve.

A descision to attend the schools Christmas party as opportunities like it are running out, starts a series of events. Some pleasant and some very unpleasant. But all of which influence the person Cass is becoming.

The relationship between Cass and Neve and Cass and her mom make wonderful reading. This book is set in and around Birmingham, UK.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in these series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me cry!

I found out about this book via a recommendation on Facebook and thought I'd try it even though it isn't my usual genre. It took me completely by surprise and so I'm writing my first ever review!

Curve tells the emotional story of Cass, a character every young woman can relate to. I don't want to give anything away but, just when things seem to be going well for her after the first problem she has, it all changes. I was surprised by how serious and emotional things got. At that point I couldn't put the book down as I was so involved with it all. I cried sad and happy tears by the end!

4.0 out of 5 stars A bowl of warm soup on a cold day!

“Curve” tells the story of Cass, a young woman embarking on her first love, Flynn, the brother of her best friend. It is a lovely debut novel – full of charm and warmth. It builds up cosily from the beginning and then you realise that the author has lulled you into a false sense of security... because then Cass goes through an ordeal that threatens to ruin her love for Flynn altogether. The first chapter is an absolute gem and sets the scene most excellently... as first chapters go, it’s practically perfect. My only real criticism of Curve is to do with the chapters that immediately follow. I felt it needed to keep up the pace a little more at that stage, to make sure to keep every reader’s attention... and a little variation too, maybe a chapter here and there from another character’s point of view. Having said that, the early chapters are still lovely to read because they’re all about this perfect, budding romance. (It is wise to keep in mind that this book is aimed at young women who might be in a similar situation to Cass: about to embark on dating, love and sex for the first time; and to them, the early chapters could be totally relevant.) The book becomes a page-turner after the incident in the middle of the book that tests their love. On the whole I found it charming and a good read, with its heart in the right place. I kept thinking of it as being like a bowl of warm soup on a cold day – Flynn’s love for Cass is unshakeable and their love scenes are sooooo endearing it’s untrue. Nicola Hudson, I look forward to the next offering!

    5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a believer! (Not a Belieber)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 27, 2014
My first introduction to YA fiction- I'm nearly 40- and I just loved this story. It deals sensitively with very mature and, at times, dark themes. (SPOILER) I ended up finishing it in one night as when things got really serious for poor Cass, I felt like I couldn't leave her like that without knowing where she'd end up- always a good sign! Since reading Curve, I've explored the genre quite a bit, but as a Brit, nothing else I've read feels as authentic and relatable to me as this story of young Midlanders. Ace debut by Nicola Hudson, I can't wait to see what the sequel brings...
