The Magick of Dark Root: A Paranormal Fantasy (Daughters of Dark Root Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 985 ratings

“There are rules that must be followed, Maggie.”
“Even in witchcraft?”
“Especially in witchcraft. What someone puts into the world comes back to them.”
“You mean karma?”
“Like karma, yes. But for a witch it comes back threefold. Never forget that.”
“That doesn’t seem fair.”
“Who said life was fair?”

In the second installment of The Daughters of Dark Root series, Maggie Maddock and her sisters are back, training under their coven-leading mother Miss Sasha Shantay to take over as the new leaders of The Council. But life isn’t as smooth as Maggie had hoped it would be. Harvest Home’s taxes have come due, and her mother’s illness has returned, stronger than ever.

Desperate, Maggie and Eve devise a scheme to make money through witchcraft.

And that’s when things go terribly wrong.

*Author's Note* This is the second book in a series, but can be read as a stand alone novel. If you are interested in reading the entire Daughters of Dark Root Series I suggest you begin with The Witches of Dark Root as the second book contains spoilers for the first book.

The Magick of Dark Root: A Paranormal Fantasy (Daughters of Dark Root Book 2) am loving 💓💕💞💖💝💞💜💙💚💛 this series! I am glad to have found it. The story is mesmerizing every page takes you on an imaginative journey. I can't wait to read book 3.. definitely recommend reading 📖 this book / series 📚

It's been a good while since I read a novel that I started and couldn't put down. Like The Witches of Dark Root, Magick stuck with me from beginning to end. The story is intriguing, the laws of magick in this universe are different from witch stories I've normally seen, and the characters are very believable. Maggie is a very flawed but realistic protagonist. Other characters with certain flaws that I normally wouldn't find redeemable actually ended up growing on me, and that was interesting.

Just keep in mind when going into this that you're getting a very character-driven story, not an action-packed tale. If that's something that would interest you, I would absolutely recommend The Magick of Dark Root.

I'm glad I continued the series and gave this book a chance. It was faster paced and had more compelling action. It had flashbacks but not as many as the first book and these flashbacks did make more sense. I like that this book revealed more secrets and showed more of the characters personality. It was a much quicker read and now I'm actually looking forward to reading the next book!

In the second book of the Daughters of Dark Root saga, Maggie Maddock is coming to terms with her identity as a powerful witch who is being called to assume her aging mother's role as leader of The Council. While Maggie and her sisters Eve, Merry, and Ruth Anne prepare to oppose the sinister forces bent on destroying their quiet little town, Maggie must also fight an internal battle--a secret she cannot reveal to the man she loves. Maggie is young. She sometimes makes bad decisions. She can be maddeningly, frustratingly stubborn. She must learn the hard lesson that power alone cannot solve all problems and even witchcraft has rules that must be followed.

As in the first novel of the series, Ms. Aasheim uses the context of fantasy to explore human relationships: the fears, worries, and responsibilities of motherhood; sibling rivalries; jealousies between lovers; and the sometimes frightful burdens of caring for an elderly, dying parent. In the hands of such a capable writer, life among the witches sounds remarkably like our own.

Another fun read. Again Aasheim pulls you right into the quirky world of Dark Root. A tongue-in-cheek romp that is as lighthearted as it is appealing, I was once again captivated by the characters and this latest visit with what has become one of my favorite families of witches. I was glad to see the romantic tensions ratcheted up and made more appealing and realistic as should be with mature adult relationships and can't wait for the next installment!!!!

Maggie Maddock and her witchy sisters are back, training under their coven-leading mother Sasha Shantay to take over the family business. But Maggie soon realizes that witchcraft can’t solve all of their problems.
This is a book about family, love, life, and sacrifice. There is more magic in this book than in the previous one and more interactions between Maggie and Eve. We also get to meet two new characters: Ruth Anne and Larinda. There’s a bit more romance too as Maggie and Shane’s relationship heats up.
The book is a continuation of the first as Maggie struggles to determine wrong from right. Maggie learns the hard way that karma is real, and if you are a witch, you pay an even heavier price for the things you do.
I enjoyed this book as much as the first one and can't wait to see what Aasheim conjures up next!

This was a pretty decent read. I like the characters and while the story lines are not especially exciting, they did keep me engaged. Everything had a nice steady pace to it so it was never boring or dull. I'd read the next one.

Maggie and sisters try to make some money and things go wrong.

    Things I liked:

    - Well written, like the first one

    - Found myself getting very irritated with some of the characters when they were being stupid, which is always good, means I'm involved!

    - The end scene was quite touching

    Reservations

    - Not sure if I enjoyed this as much as the first one. There was less of the family and home theme in this book, which for me, meant less of the warmth.

    - When they do what they do to Leo, I wasn't convinced the reaction was realistic. How would they ever have been convicted, as they used magic? On what evidence? They could've just called the police and moved on. Instead they did the worse possible thing and implicated themselves further.

    - I know that if characters communicated properly, there would be few stories, but I found it hard to believe that Eve and Paul wouldn't have had it out earlier, or that Shane wouldn't have spoken frankly with Maggie sooner. Maggie keeping quiet, I could believe.

Summary: still pretty good, worth reading

These books by April Aasheim are really well written and in many different ways highlights the various and challenging emotions felt by a family and their loved ones. Bring magic into the equation and it becomes even more so. Each sister had to find their own strengths and beliefs and to learn how to come together for the benefit of themselves, partners, children and the town that was built for them. There are many sad bits but equally many good bits and I loved the ending.
