Darker Days to Come (The DI Jimmy Bliss Crime Series Book 9) Kindle Edition
DI Bliss and his team absorb two new cases which don’t initially present as major crimes.
But who is the man who stepped in front of an express train? Did he willingly commit suicide or was he coerced? And what, if any, connection is there to an abandoned vehicle whose owner cannot be traced?
As Bliss and his team dig deeper they soon realise there are three people now missing – a journalist, a mother, and her young daughter. But as the investigations continue, the team struggle with too many unanswered questions. What they do know is that lives are at risk, and the chances of finding all three still alive decrease with each passing hour...

"Books like Bad to the Bone breathe new life into a sometimes stale genre and remind me why I’m such a fan of these types of novels. It was full of dark humour, well drawn characters and plenty of surprises to knock me off balance."
Tony J Forder is the author of the bestselling DI Bliss crime thriller series. Bad to the Bone, The Scent of Guilt, If Fear Wins, The Reach of Shadows, The Death of Justice, Endless Silent Scream, Slow Slicing, The Autumn Tree, Darker Days to Come, The Lightning Rod, and What Dies Inside Us will be joined in autumn 2024 by Something More to Say. There is also a prequel novella available called Bliss Uncovered.
Tony’s other books include two action-adventure thrillers, Scream Blue Murder and Cold Winter Sun, featuring reluctant hero Mike Lynch. Also, The Huntsmen and The Predators, feature DS Royston Chase, DC Claire Laney, and PCSO Alison May, both police procedural novels set in Wiltshire. In addition, Tony has written two standalone novels: a dark, psychological crime thriller, Degrees of Darkness, and a suspense thriller set in California, Fifteen Coffins.
Tony's first 8 novels were originally released by a publisher specialising in crime fiction. In 2020, Tony decided to strike out on his own, and subsequently negotiated the return of all publishing rights to himself. Each of those 8 books has subsequently been re-released under his own imprint, Spare Nib Books.
Tony lives with his wife in West Sussex, UK, and is a full-time author. He is currently working on book #12 in his bestselling Jimmy Bliss series. His first love was music, and he is currently gobbling up as many remastered vinyl albums as he can. Tony has played guitar since his early childhood, and despite selling off his collection at one point he has somehow managed to reacquire a new range and is up to 5 without knowing how.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2022Darker Days to Come, the latest entry of the Jimmy Bliss series, opens in beautiful noir style - Bliss on a dark, night drive, part of ‘the pulse’ of the city and the steady flow through its arteries, headed to meet a couple of d-list criminals. What unfolds for him however, are seemingly disparate investigations - a stolen Audi smelling of bleach, soon followed by a train platform ‘accident’. But both put his ‘copper’ instincts on alert- all is not as it seems. And Tony Forder has hooked us once again. This is an intense and complex procedural which moves surprisingly fast and grabs you from the start. Forder is a writer at the top of his game, confident, with an ease that shadows the wisdom and growth of his character Bliss. Its strong, gritty and humorous quality continues to be balanced with a wistful, reflective quality honed in his previous, The Autumn Tree. It continues to speak particularly well to those of us of a certain age like Jimmy, looking back to see how life helps us make sense of the present while informing the future.
This one is a book of the year contender for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2022This was a touchy subject going in. So it can be triggering going in. But its well written, handled with compassion, and kept a light side going as well. DI Jimmy Bliss just keeps breaking the rules, and we love him for it! Can't hardly wait for the next book to come out!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2022It’s getting hard not to repeat myself, but a good whodunit with a few false flags to lead one astray! Well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2022DARKER DAYS TO COME kicks off with a suspicious discovery followed by a confusing one that's related to a horrific tragedy. Baffling mystery surrounds both situations which only deepens when new information comes to light. The labyrinthine conundrums double in complexity as more angles are explored keeping every page riveting and flying by. New maze-like facets heighten tension with every chapter, intensifying with a stunning new avenue of investigation. Suspense skyrockets in the midst of a heart-racing, action packed, chilling conclusion. DARKER DAYS TO COME is an impossible to put down, one sitting winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars The mind
Really enjoyed how the storyline unfolded, from two normal unrealated cases, in to one, to catch a sycotic killer. Interesting use of the dark web to track and trace. Another one in great series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best One Yet
I absolutely love this series and each book keeps getting better. It’s fascinating to see various threads of cases and how they develop. The characters are very likable and become more well rounded with each book. The camaraderie and dry humour really makes for a very enjoyable read. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb addition to a superb series
I have been a fan of Tony’s work for a while now and I especially love his series which features the legend that is Detective Inspector Jimmy Bliss. I have read and loved every book in the series to date. When I heard that Tony was due to release another book in the series, I just knew that I had to read it as soon as I could. Well ladies and gents the wait is over because the ninth book in the series called ‘Darker Days To Come’ has just been released and it is another cracker of a read, which I thoroughly enjoyed but more about that in a bit.
What can I say about Detective Inspector Jimmy Bliss? He is certainly one of a kind that’s for sure. He has been in the police force for many years and it won’t be long until he has to start thinking about retirement (sob). Bliss is one of those police officers who gets results even if he has to bend the rules ever so slightly to get them. Bliss has a keen gut instinct and if something doesn’t seem right to him then he will investigate further until the itch has been scratched as it were and the matter has been fully investigated. You don’t get to where Bliss is now without making a fair few enemies along the way but he is aware of his enemies and deals with them accordingly. Bliss has been disciplined on more than one occasion and has been demoted. In a way Bliss is a bit of a rebel and he doesn’t always conform. I have to admit that I have a soft spot for Bliss as he reminds me a bit of my late Dad.
The fact that Tony’s name was on the front cover of a book that I hadn’t read was enough to grab my attention and when I saw the words ‘DI Bliss’ that was it. From then on I knew that I wouldn’t be able to put this book to one side for any length of time. I must be psychic (or should that be psychopathic?) because that’s exactly what happened. I made the fatal mistake of starting to read this book shortly before I went to be bed. Let’s just say that I had a distinct ‘lack of sleep’ hangover the following morning but it was so worth it. This was one of those books that stayed with me whether I had the book in my hand or not. If I wasn’t reading the book, then I was thinking about it. If I had to put the book down for any reason, then I would immediately look forward to being able to pick the book up again. I had my own suspicions as to what was going to happen and I couldn’t turn the pages of the book quickly enough as I galloped through the story. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘Darker Days To Come’ and I had to say goodbye to Bliss and his team. I found ‘Darker Days To Come’ to be a gritty, fast paced, tense and dramatic read which kept me guessing and which kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
‘Darker Days To Come’ is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Tony Forder. He has one of those writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. He has the knack of being able to catch the reader’s attention and enticing them into the story. For me, the story hits the ground running and maintains a fast pace throughout. Reading ‘Darker Days To Come’ felt like being one hell of a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. Just when you thought that you could take a moment to gather your thoughts, catch your breath and reclaim your stomach then off the action would go again. I love the way in which Tony makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. I even found that I wanted to interact with the characters and I was ‘talking’ to them as if they were real. I kept wanting to leap to Bliss’s defence and to give certain characters a piece of my mind.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Darker Days To Come’ and I definitely recommend the book and the series to other readers. This is one of those series that just gets better and better and goes from strength to strength. I will definitely be reading more of Tony’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

5.0 out of 5 stars a New Jimmy Bliss Crime thriller
Darker Days to Come
When Book 9 landed in my inbox I knew I was in for a ‘blissful’ few days, as a huge fan receiving a new Jimmy Bliss book is for me, manna from book heaven. As a reader, reconnecting again with the team, watching their characters and roles develop through so many traumatic and emotional events over the series, has been thoroughly enjoyable and interesting. Their working relationships are fascinating, believable and reliable, each has a clearly defined role and directed by DI Bliss, they work and manage the traces, links and clues unearthed to expose and reel the offenders in.
‘Darker days’ presents us with a mellower and more reflective Jimmy Bliss, who in this book, is at last able to lay some ghosts. Though his retirement is only a year away his passion for the Job is still relentless. Events begin unfolding when he’s presented with a seriously clean and abandoned car, his antenna is on high alert and with good reason, minute traces of blood have been missed in the attempted clean-up. The complex plot evolves with seemingly unconnected incidents, all within days of each other, firstly the mystery of the abandoned car, then a tragic and horrific suicide, a vandalised house, followed by missing person inquires. With unexpected twists and tenuous, worrying, links Jimmy and his team become immersed in an emotional rollercoaster ride. This intricate storyline with its sub-plots kept me engrossed and page turning well into the wee small hours. In Darker Days Tony Forder has crafted a fascinating police procedural crime novel centred around a fictional and historic child abduction case, allowing us an insight into inter-agency cooperation and politics along with one or two “who would have thought it” moments.
Thank you, Tony Forder, for another excellent adventure with my favourite and much less curmudgeonly hero and thank goodness he still has a year to go before his retirement.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great read
As usual this DI Bliss book was excellent. I thought I had the answer a couple of times but was wrong! The regular characters are all here too. So many twists and turns and a few red herrings, which I love. Tony Forder has done it again!
