Death Notification Agency, Volume One: The Reaper (DNA Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

“You got 24 hours to live.”

That’s all he knows. Doesn’t know the how or the why— just the
when.

Meet Ramsay Carnes. Known to his friends—like the one he told was gonna die today—as "Ram."

Ram’s a process server, a
reaper, for the Death Notification Agency—the DNA—which is now the biggest government organization in the world thanks to a mysterious and highly-guarded technology that can determine the time of anyone's demise, right down to the minute.

That’s where Ram comes in. It’s his job as a reaper to deliver
death notices to soon-to-be-deceased citizens 24 hours before they give up the ghost. That’s it. Nothing complex about it. He’s assigned to District 598.4A. Hollywood. Not that one. The other one, in Florida—his own sunny armpit of the world.

And life ain’t that bad for Ram. Besides a wrecked marriage and kids that barely talk to him, Ram floats through his days letting people know when their life’s about to go belly up, then heads to Nasty Nate’s Tavern in his aloha shirt for a drink. As he sees it, at least he’s giving people a chance to put their affairs in order and say goodbye to their loved ones.

It’s definitely not the most glamorous job, but hey, it’s a job. And since the DNA’s never been wrong in predicting a death, he works with the confidence of knowing he’s doing his part to help people in their final hours.

But Ram’s simple life is about to get a lot more complicated when one night…

He receives his own death notice.

The Reaper is the first volume of six in the Death Notification Agency series.

About the illustrator

Canadian-born visual artist launched his artistic career as MAD DOG JONES in 2017. His works, presented at his world premiere show “Afterl-ife World” in Tokyo and via Instagram where their popularity spread quickly. MAD DOG JONES’ works deftly interweave cyberpunk elements with the beauty and freedom of nature. As a lover of the wilderness, which was ever present where he grew up, he brings a fresh thematic to the metropolitan aesthetic, done up in citrus and neon tones of technology somehow rendered as a space naturally human. Having grown up around Thunder Bay, MAD DOG JONES draws constant inspiration from the Canadian wilderness, as well as from Japanese animation, SF films, and cyberpunk, pulling together a rare and powerful fusion of two worlds sometimes deemed irreconcilable. His dual affinities with music and art have led him to create cover art and other works for Maroon 5, Jabbawockeez, Chromeo and more.

Wow - I really enjoyed this story! It’s so original. Love the premise and the twist where the main character receives his own death notice that sets the table for the rest of the story.
If you love sci fi stories like Total Recall and Minority Report you will love this.

Couldn't put this one down, loved the noir-ish add on to a minority report, DOA type of story line. Plenty of action, as we are fully behind our hard-headed protagonist Ram through this mind-bending fast-paced ride vying for his future and the future of everyone. Because of course this type of thing happens in Hollywood. Hollywood, Florida, of course. Great writing, fantastic voice and best of all in these current days a real good time--

Neo-Hard-Boiled to it's core, DNA is a fantastic noir debut. Couldn't put it down and can't wait to read the rest. Excellent premise, wildly imaginative world, great characters, and gritty as gunpowder prose. This one's special, guys.
