As I have with each one of the Dirty Rich books to date, I loved Dirty Rich Obsession; in fact, I believe it's my favorite of the series so far, primarily because of its irresistible characters, but also because the story itself manages to convey so much power and feeling that it's palpable even between the lines. It works perfectly as a standalone or as a complement to the first two Dirty Rich novels. The secondary characters and their secondary plotlines overlap, but each story is unique and compelling.
DRO is, as expected, a sexy, passionate, provocative, and suspenseful enemies-to-lovers romance, but it's so much more than that. The external conflict - the source of the animosity between the Maxwells and the Wests - is so profoundly and unrelentingly bitter, the drive for vengeance is almost primal. It's reminiscent of the war between the Capulets and the Montagues -- if the feuding families were wealthy, greedy, powerful, hopelessly hateful and bitter New York real estate barons with deep, dark, ugly secrets. And, like Romeo and Juliet, Reid and Carrie are caught in the middle of this war, forced to choose between family loyalty and a deep, abiding need for each other. However, unlike, the famous Shakespearean drama, there is a lot of seriously hot, hungry, angry sex and an epic power struggle between Reid - an alpha male with serious anger management issues - and Carrie, a cunning and equally alpha female with some significant failings and flaws of her own.
What starts out as a hilarious skirmish between Reid and Carrie leads to a bitter, reluctant corporate partnership, which inevitably escalates to a deeply intimate, passionate, unexpected - and as the title implies, obsessive - forbidden relationship; a relationship that each is aware could result in total personal and professional destruction. The conflict forces them to face their deepest fears and greatest flaws; to make painful discoveries and even more painful choices, and, inevitably, to re-write their destiny. It's a beautiful, powerful, relatable struggle, exquisitely written, emotionally resonant, and entirely unforgettable.
Structurally, I noticed, as others have, some repetitive language and lengthy internal monologues that could create a distraction and slow down the pace. But the characters are so richly layered, and their conflicts are so eloquently conveyed, that it was easy to look past the few technical hiccups in the narrative. The secondary characters add depth and dimension - and, if you've read the previous books in the series, they feel comforting and familiar. If you haven't read them, you have something to look forward to.
I am a fan of everything Lisa writes, and I've already pre-ordered the next book in this entertaining, thought-provoking series.

still as good as i imagined
Yup. It still hasn't changed. I still find myself completely drawn in by Lisa Renee Jones' stories. They are engaging, mysterious and they call out to me in ways that i never expect. They hold aspects that are entirely realistic and makes me see myself in one or another character, and holds that wishful aspect that makes me wonder if it could come true. We all know that there are some real character types of people that live out there, the kinds that make you really question whether they are real, like Reid Maxwell. And when you have someone like Carrie more than able to match him in brains, looks and decision making, you can't help but root for one or the other. This time, i'm not sure if i was rooting for Reid to hold on to his regular nature or for Carrie to make him see the light and finally patch what is broken between him and his brother and sister. I know that if there is another instalment in this series, i'll be the first to run to it and get my grubby little hands on it and find out what else happens. It's just that kind of story that makes you more than a little happy to read, to let go of reality and realize that while you're having your own troubles, it feels great letting go and seeing others try to find their own way as much as you do. *ARC provided by Author in exchange for an honest review.
