Dance the Tide: A Modern Pride and Prejudice Variation Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 278 ratings

The higher the wall around your heart, the harder you fall when someone knocks it down.

Wealthy businessman Will Darcy is fiercely protective of his privacy and his family. When his sister is the victim of a violent crime, he takes her away from Boston to their Cape Cod beach house, where he hopes she can heal in peace—and he can restore his equilibrium.

Ecohydrologist Elizabeth Bennet is happily residing in the seaside town where she grew up. Her career, friends, and family keep her busy, allowing her to avoid any romantic entanglements—as those only lead to heartbreak.

A brief encounter on the beach between Elizabeth and Will leads to misunderstandings and lousy first impressions. They go their separate ways, confident they’ll never see each other again. But fate has other plans when Will turns out to be the best friend of her sister’s boyfriend.

When they meet again under more favorable circumstances, Will soon realizes his initial impressions of Elizabeth were unfounded—and really, her eyes are magnificent. And with some dedicated effort, Elizabeth begins to see a different man—the real Will—buried beneath his arrogant, reticent façade.

Romance blossoms as Elizabeth struggles to conquer her insecurities and Will works to overcome his distrust. But every relationship occasionally finds itself in rough waters, and greater forces can tug a couple under the waves. For their love to triumph, Will and Elizabeth will need to have faith in one another, move beyond their fears…and dare to dance the tide.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Dance the Tide is a wonderfully authentic tale about wading through the challenging and treacherous waters of life. A beautiful Pride and Prejudice homage that doesn't focus primarily on mistaken pride or overcoming prejudices, but instead brings about a splendidly rewarding tale of healing, deep love, forgiveness, and emotional well-being. I highly recommend." 5 stars - Austenesque Reviews

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Cat Andrews has always been an avid reader, but didn’t discover Jane Austen until her love of a certain British actor led her to the BBC’s 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice, because she just had to know—why all the fuss over this Darcy guy? What followed her viewing of that glorious miniseries was an inhalation of and immediate fixation on all of Austen’s novels, though Pride and Prejudice remains her favorite (and that certain British actor will always be, to her, the quintessential Darcy).

Her discovery of Jane Austen Fan Fiction opened up a whole new world, and thus began her addiction, and months and months of sleep deprivation, as she immersed herself in JAFF. After reading a modern Pride and Prejudice variation that she fell in love with, she was inspired to begin a cautious but earnest foray into the world of writing.

In real life, Cat has spent thirty-plus years working in healthcare. She is a confirmed thalassophile and enjoys life on the shores of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where she grew up, fell in love with her own Mr. Darcy, and raised a family. More often than not, you can find her at the beach with a book in her hand and her toes in the sand.

I’m not a huge fan of modern P&P variations, but this is one of the best I have ever read. It is incredibly emotional and passionate. While Elizabeth is the strong and wonderful character she is usually portrayed, this Darcy is amazing in terms of his emotional arc and gradual self-realization. This is a book you won’t be able to put down. A deeply satisfying read.

As a former resident of Cape Cod, this story was interesting to me because of the memories of my favorite beaches and the fun during the summer. Elizabeth is a scientist at Woods Hole and Darcy is a real estate developer ( huge commercial properties) and both live on the Cape although Darcy's a part time resident.
Many of the same characters are here except the Bennet girls consists of Jane, Elizabeth and Lydia... While Charles only has Caroline who is only seen occasionally. Of course the nasty Wickhams' here causing trouble and destruction in his wake.
Its a well written modern adaptation that hits the important events but focuses mainly on the relationship between the two.

Another lovely modern Pride and Prejudice novel by this author. The story was awesome!

I enjoyed the strong Jane which is unlike canon. She has Lizzy's back in so many ways. Lizzy has much she needs to overcome. Once Darcy gets his head out of his other body part, he is a romantic lead. I especially enjoyed this aspect of the story line. He has much to make amends for and not just to Lizzy.

Dance the Tide is an engaging modern Pride and Prejudice variation. Elizabeth Bennet and William Darcy meet and misunderstand each other, but eventually their misunderstanding smolders into attraction. As the major characters’ attraction develops into love, both must work through previous traumas to make their relationship work. There are twists and turns in this journey that you won’t see coming but that are completely realistic. Not only are this Elizabeth and Darcy well-formed and complex characters, but secondary characters, such as Charles, Jane, and Georgiana, are beautifully developed as well. Written by Cat Andrews, author of Sanctuary and An Unexpected Harvest, this variation spins its magic on Massachusetts’ Cape Cod. You will not only fall in love with Cat’s writing and her characters, but you may very well find yourself booking a vacation on the Cape for you and your family and friends his summer.

I can feel the inklings of an engrossing story (George is particularly slimy), but I’m over 200 pages into the book and I’m still reading exposition. At page 120 they’d only been dating for a week. A hundred more pages in and we’re at the five week mark. And the subplot with George is very much still an inkling on the horizon.

There’s only so much navel gazing one can do, only so much making out two grown adults can do, before the reader is bored out of their minds. I don’t know if I will finish this, but will update if I do.

This is one of my very favourite modern Pride and Prejudice variations! It combines an engaging and consistent plot with likeable characters, ecxellent dialogues and the beautiful setting of Cape Cod. I read the story on a fanfiction website a few years ago and was very sorry when it was withdrawn from the site before I could read it once more. Thus, I was all the more happy when the author announced that she was going to publish this story too. I highly recommend all her books and hope that she will write more in the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars A long and satisfying story

    4.5*.

This a very long story which draws the reader into the developing relationship between Elizabeth and Will. They both have traumas and difficulties in their past which are slowly revealed to the reader although not always to each other. This unwillingness to open up completely comes back to bite them with a vengeance.

The writing flows well and carries the reader along with Elizabeth and Will through the good, the bad, and the very ugly. There are huge rocks along the path to happiness as well as an enormous pit which they temporarily fall into but we can trust this author to pull them out.

I felt that the ‘modernisation’ of the classic was well done across the board but I thought this was particularly well done with Darcy. Again and again I spotted little examples which were pertinent to the story but also had clear parallels to the original.

    I highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really well written but angsty
Reviewed in Canada on April 11, 2024
This is a great story: developed characters, the writing flows super well, good editing, and with a very intricate plot. There were so many lovely scenes. E & D were very good as a couple and their love is so well portrayed.

Beware: It is very angsty too, regarding Mr Wickham’s actions to drive Darcy away from Elizabeth (which worked for a while), and the fact that Darcy then leaves Elizabeth in a difficult situation when he discovers it. That was such a difficult part of the book. Anxiety inducing. It is resolved and they have a HEA but it was painful.

Having read this when it was originally posted on A Happy Assembly, I was delighted to see it published. It even inspired me to work out the new system of purchasing, which I'd given up on previously.

This is a story that manages drama and tension without falling into melodrama. The characters are also self-reflexive, not only examining their actions and responses, but working to change, grow and trust. Highly recommended.
