Dangerous Lady: A historical drama set at Henry VIII's court (The Marwood Family Tudor Saga Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,122 ratings

The first book in a stunning Tudor historical series! For fans of Philippa Gregory, Elizabeth Chadwick, Carol McGrath and Anne O’Brien.

Will Thomasin choose duty – or love…?

1527

At seventeen,
Thomasin Marwood is plunged into court society when a husband is found for her elder sister, Cecilia.

But the mood at court is tense. It is split between the conservative Catholics, loyal to Queen Catherine of Aragon, and the fashionable Francophiles, enthralled by King Henry's mistress, Anne Boleyn.

While her parents sympathise with the old queen and her faith, Thomasin can not help but be drawn to the glamour and vitality Anne represents.

And her head is soon turned by the tall, dark and handsome Rafe Danvers who seems equally entranced with her.

But as a ward of Anne’s father, Sir Thomas Boleyn, Rafe represents the “other” side, of which Thomasin’s parents are unlikely to approve. And they have already lined up their own candidate for Thomasin’s hand,
Sir Giles Waterson, who comes from wealth and good standing.

Thomasin finds herself torn between duty and the desire Rafe has aroused in her. But when she is drawn into a dark plot concerning Queen Catherine, she realises the court is far more dangerous than it appears…

Which path, and with whom, will she choose?

DANGEROUS LADY is a page-turning historical drama set at the court of King Henry VIII and featuring Anne Boleyn. It is the first book in the Marwood Family Tudor Saga Series.

THE MARWOOD FAMILY TUDOR SAGA SERIES:

"A page-turning collage of lives" Times Literary Supplement.

"This insight is so rare and so valuable … a considered and scholarly account of the matriarch of the House of York" (Cecily Neville) Author Philippa Gregory

"Living Like a Tudor deftly recreates the medieval landscape, drawing on the five senses to offer a glimpse of the sights, smells and tastes of 15th- through 17th-century England." Smithsonian Magazine

"A long overdue biography of one of the most dramatic medieval heroines – vivid, very readable, and wonderfully detailed." Author Sarah Gristwood.

"What an artist does with colours on a canvas, Amy Licence does with words on paper." Amazon reviewer Anne Marie Bouchard.

"Amy Licence... is unquestionably the most prolific historian writing today. Her output of books in recent years is incredible, the culmination of a life’s fascination and study of the subject." Historian Nathen Amin.

"In each of Licence's books I've read and reviewed, she reminds me to be careful how I "interpret" the historical people, especially in regards to the era in which they lived. I appreciate Amy bringing my mind back to where it needs to be, to not make hasty judgments, and to take in to account the society, and culture, and unique circumstance in which they lived." Reviewer Annette Hart Kristynik.

"One aspect of Licence’s writing I most appreciate is that she makes it very clear what is fact and what is supposition. I particularly noticed in this biography that she often offered multiple interpretations of various actions, which I thought added depth to her writing." Reviewer Deborah, North Texas

"Amy Licence is one of the best historical writers out there. She is not an apologist, but a responsible historian out to give as much information as she can without imposing her own point of view." Author Carole P Roman

"Amy Licence is a very good writer. She puts you right in the heart of her books. For me, they are unputdownable." Amazon review.

"Licence delves deep into every whispered rumour and innuendo, using solid research to confirm or dismiss each reported fling. Her account is engaging and readable; treading the fine line between popular and academic history with expert precision. Even if you are well-read on the king's many relationships, there are plenty of gems in here that I haven't seen anywhere else!" Author Adrienne Dillard.

The best thing about this read is the conflicted main character, Thomasin. Her desires between wishing to support Queen Catherine as part of her upright court and her fascination with the wildly exciting court of Anne Boleyn are completely relatable. The supporting characters are well drawn in, although Rafe Danvers seems a bit of a caricature of that dark-haired bad boy lurking in many a girl's psyche. The more I read, the more I wanted to get back to the story. The ending is both satisfying and enticing, leading me straight on to the next book in this series.

I enjoy reading historical fiction and have read quite a few books dealing with the Tudor era. Amy Licence is a skilled writer who fleshes out her fictional characters so that they emerge as real people. King Henry VIII, Ann Boleyn, Queen Katherine, and other actual historical characters, seem to appear at the edges of this story. I was glad the author didn't dwell on them but told the tale of a family spending 2 weeks at Court where their eldest daughter is to be married. Things don't go as planned however.
There are secrets that come out . This book was MT cup of tea!

And well written, with attention to accuracy of known history and known historical figures, yet told in a new way from the point of view of a heroine who makes herself a major player even though she is but a speck on the wall. I won't say if she is historically based or not, but I enjoyed the story a great deal, and leave it to other readers to discover which characters are real and which ones are part of the authors imagination... and how difficult it is to tell the difference! Kudos are well deserved for this book.

This is the first time I have read this author. The book started out slow… it dragged on. I almost stopped reading it. I plunged forward and I’m glad I did. The characters grew on me and so did the story line. It ended up being entertaining. It had a bit of everything. Love, deceit, drama and happiness.

Once I found Amy License as author, I knew I had found gold. I’ve read both books in this series and was charmed by the story telling and searched for a third in the series without luck. Alas, no more of the Marwood family. I hope she will continue with a third. I highly recommend this series.

I really enjoyed this. It has evocative descriptions of the daily life in Tudor times, so well written I could imagine I was there. Thomasin is an appealing and likeable heroine who evolves into somebody who is able to navigate her way through dangerous times. I have just started the second Troubled Queen which looks to be just as good.

I liked this close knit family and above all the strong personality of Thomasin.
