Dare to be Wicked (Daring Daughters Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,324 ratings

Their mothers dared all for love.
Just imagine what their daughters will do...

Dare to be Wicked

Two daring daughters…
Lady Elizabeth and Lady Charlotte are the daughters of the Duke and Duchess of Bedwin. Raised by an unconventional mother and an indulgent if overprotective father, they both strain against the rigid morality of the era. The fashionable image of a meek, weak young lady, prone to swooning at the least provocation, is one that makes them seethe with frustration.

Their handsome childhood friend…
Cassius Cadogan, Viscount Oakley, is the only child of the Earl and Countess of St Clair. Beloved and indulged, he is popular, gloriously handsome and a talented artist. Returning from two years of study in France, his friendship with both sisters becomes strained as jealousy raises its head. A situation not helped by the two mysterious Frenchmen who have accompanied him home.

And a simmering sibling rivalry… Passion, art, and secrets prove to be a combustible combination, and someone will undoubtedly get burned.

I knew I would love the first book in the series - it was a continuation of all the characters I love in the original series (you don't have to read the first series, but it helps if you want to know the parents in this one) but now their children twenty years later. It was so much fun revisiting with old & meeting the new, awesome grown children & a couple of friends Cass brought with him from France. This story is based around Cassius (Cass) Cadogan, Viscount Oakley & son of Jasper Cadogan, Earl of St. Clair & his wife Harriet Stanhope Cadogan & Lady Charlotte (Lottie) Adolphus daughter of Robert Adolphus, Duke of Bedwin & his wife, Duchess Prunella Adolphus Bedwin.

Cass & Lottie find themselves in love with one another, but they can't let it be known because it will hurt Lottie's sister. This couple is perfectly amazing as they are meant for each other & the story makes the reader turn pages to see what will happen. I loved seeing the older character from earlier books & meeting the new brothers, sisters, cousins & friends in the new generation. I cannot wait for the next book with Nic & Eliza's story & more dares from "The Hat".

    What I liked:

    -Sweet hero
    -Vivacious, self-effacing, What-you-see-is-What-you-get heroine
    -Interesting secondary characters
-Funny, chill (for the most part) parents
-A soothingly simple love story. Yes, there is some angst, but not too much (at least not the main hero and heroine). This is a sweet, slow burn romance that does eventually get to some real heat. I am so glad that the H and h didn’t decide to “end” their relationship out of guilt over their friend and sister. The French brothers’ story, I fear, will be filled with angst.

    What I liked less:

-Trying to keep all the characters straight. The family trees helped, but in the e-book, they are not visually crisp, especially the Bedwins’.

-The fact that a friendship so strong it inspired two young adults to believe they would marry was never demonstrated. We only heard about it. Yet I took to heart the truth that such a friendship existed, so as I will explain later, the hero gets no pass from me for his behavior.

-The kernel of affection that was supposed to have been building over the years between the H and h was also described but never demonstrated. So, despite the fact that Cassius and Charlotte made a cute couple, it came off as simply a strong physical attraction on the hero’s part, at least in the beginning. If we had been provided a prologue that showed the relationship of the two sisters and Cass before he left for France, there might have been a way to create more sympathy for the H and h.

-The lack of real recrimination for the H and h’s behaviors. As written, I could not help but be angry with Cass and Charlotte. The only character that reacted appropriately to how Lottie was betrayed was Nic Demarteau.

Sometimes Ms. Leech (whom I love, btw) effectively breaks the fourth wall to make excuses for her characters. She wants us to forgive them and tries to manipulate that reaction, but I’m a bitter wench when it comes to my expectations of literary heroes and heroines. It matters not that marriage contracts weren’t signed. EVERYONE from the butler to the Duke to the fly on the wall knew that Eliza and Cassius expected to marry regardless of said friends and family’s personal misgivings. The only ones that didn’t seem to know - which is the most damning black mark against Cassius - are the French brothers.

Cassius was gone two years, all the time writing letters to Eliza that left no hint that his feelings had changed. Yet in that time, he never told his French friends he had an understanding with Eliza? Furthermore, he took lovers while Eliza was back home turning down marriage proposals from dukes and marquesses because she was staying true to him. It’s one thing to sow your wild oats when there isn’t an intended, but not when there is one you supposedly love who is waiting patiently for you. And then when he finally comes home, he avoids her. He was so immature, though charmingly so in many respects, just not here.

And as for Charlotte, what she did was almost unforgivable. She tried to seduce Cass before she even knew he was going to break it off with Charlotte. And to make matters worse, she had never been honest with her sister about either her feelings for Cass or the fact that she thought Cass and Eliza did not suit. Then she (and her mother, to my great disappointment) steers Eliza toward the Comte even though no one knows a thing about him. I had Deja vu of Matilda (Girls Who Dare series) who was always being maltreated because of her proper ladylike behavior and agreeable nature.

In some ways, this was not Cass and Charlotte’s story, but Eliza’s. And because of that, the actual H and h suffered in the eyes of this reader. I’m not arguing with the plot elements. An ill-advised informal betrothal plus the hero’s burgeoning interest in the younger sister and that sister’s returned affection is a GREAT plot. Furthermore, I’m not even saying that Eliza shouldn’t have eventually forgiven them, but she did so way too fast.

Even if she was starting to have her own doubts, neither Cass nor Charlotte gave Eliza the time or opportunity or the respect of a conversation to work it out. I would have been completely happy from a plot standpoint if Eliza had not attended the wedding and had visited friends in Scotland or London instead, and I think everyone should have supported her, including her parents. It was too much to expect Eliza to get back to business as usual. But that was the theme, after all. Everyone expected Eliza to grin and bear it even whilst obliquely condemning her for being so accommodating which, by the way, was my final criticism.

Why four stars? This is so well written, and despite the lack of a prologue (or flashbacks) to garner sympathy for the H and h, the couple is very sweet. And most readers will be enchanted with the extended family and the anticipation of their stories yet to come.

A great start to the Daughters of the Peculiar Ladies Club.
Lottie (Charlotte) & Cassius's characters were Absolutely Wonderful.

Eliza & Lottie whom are sisters are excited for their childhood friend coming home from being abroad. Eliza believes Cassius is going to propose to her, & Lottie has been in love with him for years now.

Both sisters are complete opposite, Lottie loves adventure & Eliza is the prim & proper one.

I am looking forward to reading Eliza's story next in this series.

I loved it! From the first page to the last Dare to be Wicked will keep your attention from the moment you begin the journey with Charlotte and Cassius until the very end! This is the first novel to the series Daring Daughters. Emma V Leech has written a heartfelt story, filled it with characters that come off the pages and pull you into their tale, a story that is well-written, sizzling passion, an enjoyable plot with witty and playful banter. With visits from characters who you found a special place in your heart from the Girls Who Dare series was very enjoyable.

I agree with other reviewer's stating the H and h acted more like teenager's. Not to be honest with supposedly your best friend. The h is 21 and the H older - everyone assumed when the H came back from France he would purpose to the h's sister/Eliza. Nope didn't happen because the H fell in love with the sister/Lottie and she with him.

All the sneaking around was childish. I know the author thought if she threw in that Eliza was having doubts and was feeling an attraction to someone else all would be forgiven. Eliza felt like she was being made a fool of and was hurt.

I didn't feel a connection to the H or Lottie at all. So when they have sex it isn't filled with passion/love but lust. Heat level 4 out of 5.

I rated it higher than I would have because I did enjoy the secondary story with Eliza and her Frenchman.
    There story is left hanging.

Wasn't romantic for me, no cliffhanger for the main couple and steam. (ljb)

This was a good story, great characters, but a little to many for my liking, a sister betrayal to another, two brothers, who aren't quite suitable, and a young man torn between the two sisters, and an ending, that leaves room for Elizabeth story .
    Thank you♥️

I so enjoyed the series that led up to this, the "Girls Who Dare" that I couldn't wait to read the first of their daughters' stories and wasn't disappointed. Emma V Leech creates characters with personality, the girls have spirit, the men have backbone and you know sparks are going to fly. Sit back and enjoy the read.

This book felt like when you come home and that feeling of warmth and love envelops you - this book made me feel right back in the love of the peculiar ladies !!!

Lady Eliza is convinced that after two years travelling, her childhood friends Cassius Cadogan will settle down with her as oer their childhood promise. Little does she realize that life often takes a different turn and she does not find that she is very attracted to Cassius !

When two of Cassius's french friends arrive - Lady Eliza is drawn to the illegitimate brother making her questions her own feelings and when her sister seems to be drawn to Cassius - she is at a loss to understand. Lady Lottie and Lady Eliza decide to understand each other and confronts their feelings !

Witty, romantic and with full of french surprises ( *WINK*) - this book is indeed a wonderful start to what seems to be another best seller for Ms. Leech !
