After five years of working for the Devil, Claire Cooper believes she lives an otherwise normal life. Until she finds herself in jeopardy for a murder she did not commit. Desperate to save her life and soul, she enters Purgatory, but runs afoul of the Devil's sister, Pagan Queen Mab. Mab has her own agenda and uses Claire to get even with the Devil. Claire learns each ruler is in a race to discover “the girl” in the prophecy to fix time. As Claire peels away clues to the real killer, she realizes she must outwit the Devil’s children or end up a prisoner in Purgatory forever.

Darkly Delicious

"I feel absolutely head over heels in love with this book! It truly was dark & delicious. Mayhem, death, Demons, Pagans, Druids and a kickass heroine!"

- Taking It One Book at a Time (Blog)

From the Back Cover

Claire, the Devil's assistant, knows very little about the world she was dropped into five years ago, when she inherited her mother's unpaid debt to the Demon King. She certainly didn't expect to be a contender for the Fallen Queen's throne, a target for the Druid King's mafia, or a suspect in the murder of Junior, the Devil's oldest hell spawn.

In a last ditch effort to save her life and get out of her deal with the Devil, she sets out to solve Junior's murder only to be taken prisoner by the four most dangerous immortal hell spawn alive.

Not to be out done, the Pagan Queen Mab, claims Claire for entering her realm uninvited. She has an old debt to settle with her brother the Devil. Taking Claire from him after losing her years ago is just icing on the cake.

Will Claire win her freedom, and save herself from the Devil? Or be trapped by Mab forever?

What an interesting take on a paranormal fantasy. I was hooked from the first chapter and even tried to weasel taking my future lunch breaks so I could keep reading...I was denied! This series started off with a bang and didn't overload you with world building right from the start. Inadevertet time travel, 'go ahead and kill me cause my life cannnot get worse than this' attitude from the heroine and it created an awesome story I found hard to put down. I was enthralled to the end and immensly happy that the second book picked up quite literally where the first one ended.

My only GAH! part of the book was the typos and the incorrect word being used. Really, who actually gets paid to proof read these? If it's a friend, find someone more competent, put out a call for a knowledgeable person who actually uses correct speech and has the ability to know that to and too are two different words...those inconsistencies usually detract from the entertainment value of the book. It definitely should not have been so cheap due to it being a full length novel, but who am I to complain?

Dark Hope is a unique read. Our protagonist Claire is employed as the Devil/Summer Kings assistant. This isn’t exactly a job you can just quit; that could land you in hell. The Boss is prickly, impatient and will not provide Dental, and he’s serious about no Dental! Claire is pretty sure the Boss actually hates her but so far she manages to keep her job and her soul in one piece. That is until someone decides to interfere with Claire’s life.

This urban fantasy is gritty. Frankly Claire’s life kinda sucks; she handles it pretty well but man you really feel like she drew the short straw in life. You really do hope that the fates give her a break because wow she deserves one. Her goal in Dark Hope is just to survive the next few days, try and figure out what is going on, why she’s being set up, and who is doing the setting up. After this week is all said and done her life is never going to be like it was, for better or worse.

Dark Hope was entertaining; the topics are fairly dark and it does have a bit of violence, much of it is against Claire. There is no romance and no sex scenes; only some attempted ones. Probably to mature of subject matter for most YA and more of a new adult to adult novel.

This is a genre that I enjoy and read often, but I found Dark Hope refreshingly different. The imagery is vivid without excess description. The dialog is bold and engaging. The characters were well developed. For all books in this genre you have to easily suspend disbelief, but I had no trouble; I was hooked in the first few pages. I'm looking forward to more from this author

This book was a very interesting premise, and the start to a new series about Claire, who is the personal assistant for the devil.
The world building and different places like the underworld were explored and played an important part in story development.
Writing was good, one error, scrapped instead of scraped, was all I noticed.
Unfortunately I am just not that excited about this genre of fantasy as I am some others.

Dark Hope was an incredible read! I didn’t want it to end and I simply couldn’t put it down. I was instantly sucked into the world H.D. Smith created and became so invested in Claire that I had to keep reading. Claire is both smart and strong but she has been dealt a raw deal. I love the way she kept her head and solved problems, learning to use her emerging powers. I felt her hurt and betrayal; my heart ached for her each time she learned a new truth. The action never slows or stops. I think it would be a spectacular movie! The ending was fantastic--everything was tied up perfectly. I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed a book this much. I can’t wait for the sequel!

I think there's a lot that can be said for books like these. At heart, Devils Assistant's first book is a convoluted Sue-filled disaster. That doesn't mean it can't be fun and it certainly doesn't mean that the writing is terrible. In fact, the fantastic narration and clear cut skill is what makes this book a 5-star despite the tall tale signs of Fanfiction Originals. I really love the character, and while the placement can sometimes be confusing, you can tell heart and soul was poured into this story. I can't wait for the next book.

Ive said it befor and ill be forced to say it again "suffering is no substitution for character development" it is sad how many authors mistake the two. There is also a difference between a plot twist and simply not telling the reader what is happening.

The main character is unlikeable as is every other character. Plot is discrded to make room for nothing happening and of course more suffereing both for the characters an the reader.
