- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat an interesting take on a paranormal fantasy. I was hooked from the first chapter and even tried to weasel taking my future lunch breaks so I could keep reading...I was denied! This series started off with a bang and didn't overload you with world building right from the start. Inadevertet time travel, 'go ahead and kill me cause my life cannnot get worse than this' attitude from the heroine and it created an awesome story I found hard to put down. I was enthralled to the end and immensly happy that the second book picked up quite literally where the first one ended.
My only GAH! part of the book was the typos and the incorrect word being used. Really, who actually gets paid to proof read these? If it's a friend, find someone more competent, put out a call for a knowledgeable person who actually uses correct speech and has the ability to know that to and too are two different words...those inconsistencies usually detract from the entertainment value of the book. It definitely should not have been so cheap due to it being a full length novel, but who am I to complain?
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDark Hope is a unique read. Our protagonist Claire is employed as the Devil/Summer Kings assistant. This isn’t exactly a job you can just quit; that could land you in hell. The Boss is prickly, impatient and will not provide Dental, and he’s serious about no Dental! Claire is pretty sure the Boss actually hates her but so far she manages to keep her job and her soul in one piece. That is until someone decides to interfere with Claire’s life.
This urban fantasy is gritty. Frankly Claire’s life kinda sucks; she handles it pretty well but man you really feel like she drew the short straw in life. You really do hope that the fates give her a break because wow she deserves one. Her goal in Dark Hope is just to survive the next few days, try and figure out what is going on, why she’s being set up, and who is doing the setting up. After this week is all said and done her life is never going to be like it was, for better or worse.
Dark Hope was entertaining; the topics are fairly dark and it does have a bit of violence, much of it is against Claire. There is no romance and no sex scenes; only some attempted ones. Probably to mature of subject matter for most YA and more of a new adult to adult novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2014This is a genre that I enjoy and read often, but I found Dark Hope refreshingly different. The imagery is vivid without excess description. The dialog is bold and engaging. The characters were well developed. For all books in this genre you have to easily suspend disbelief, but I had no trouble; I was hooked in the first few pages. I'm looking forward to more from this author
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was a very interesting premise, and the start to a new series about Claire, who is the personal assistant for the devil.
The world building and different places like the underworld were explored and played an important part in story development.
Writing was good, one error, scrapped instead of scraped, was all I noticed.
Unfortunately I am just not that excited about this genre of fantasy as I am some others.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2014Dark Hope was an incredible read! I didn’t want it to end and I simply couldn’t put it down. I was instantly sucked into the world H.D. Smith created and became so invested in Claire that I had to keep reading. Claire is both smart and strong but she has been dealt a raw deal. I love the way she kept her head and solved problems, learning to use her emerging powers. I felt her hurt and betrayal; my heart ached for her each time she learned a new truth. The action never slows or stops. I think it would be a spectacular movie! The ending was fantastic--everything was tied up perfectly. I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed a book this much. I can’t wait for the sequel!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAn awesome storyline with strong characters and a fast paced plot. All in all a great read and I'm ready to read the next in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI think there's a lot that can be said for books like these. At heart, Devils Assistant's first book is a convoluted Sue-filled disaster. That doesn't mean it can't be fun and it certainly doesn't mean that the writing is terrible. In fact, the fantastic narration and clear cut skill is what makes this book a 5-star despite the tall tale signs of Fanfiction Originals. I really love the character, and while the placement can sometimes be confusing, you can tell heart and soul was poured into this story. I can't wait for the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am now just finished reading books 1,2 and 3 ! WOW. couldnt stop long enough to post a review after each book, so am going to post this to all 3 if possible. I got these books with Kindle Unlimited, so worth it !! The writing is fantastic. Noticed only a few errors, excellent editing. The story is so alive ! It grabs you and doesnt let go. Not going into details, since there are enough out there already. Only want to say READ THIS SERIES !! You will not regret it ! It has everything !

1.0 out of 5 stars Confused mess
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIve said it befor and ill be forced to say it again "suffering is no substitution for character development" it is sad how many authors mistake the two. There is also a difference between a plot twist and simply not telling the reader what is happening.
The main character is unlikeable as is every other character. Plot is discrded to make room for nothing happening and of course more suffereing both for the characters an the reader.
