- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2014The Monda Guardia are after Diego as he walks home one dark night and all he can do to remain civil and hope they leave him alone. His much loved horse is worth a bob or two, and his mule has scampered off into the night carrying an exotic cargo, a cargo he doesn’t want them to see. But when his young son, Paco, gets into trouble, Diego’s afraid for his family and his livestock.
Paco is a resourceful boy just like his father and when a most prized possession is seized, he has a plan. Problem is, he’s up against a force far stronger than he anticipates.
Harlond is very skilled at holding her readers attention, even to the bitter end. It’s impossible to put a good story down, especially one that is based on true events during the first year of the Spanish Civil War. An added bonus at the back of this book is the first chapter of Empress Emerald. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2019Format: KindleA lovely, beautifully written short story based on true events at the start of the Spanish Civil War in rural Andalusia. Loved the authors style of writing. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2014Set against a background of fear and mistrust, this simple tale of a young boy who faces danger to regain his father’s good favour, does an excellent job in illustrating the challenges faced by rural civilians during the Spanish Civil War. At the same time it provides us with the heart warming tale of Diego the smuggler of contraband whose valuable stallion is ‘saved’ by the ingenuity of his eight year old son. A super little story made all the more meaningful by the authors note explaining that this is based on a true story.
The first chapter of the author’s novel The ‘Empress Emerald’, at the end of the short story, was an unexpected bonus, which I’ve also downloaded and look forward to reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2014What a lovely simple tale that takes the reader into the world of fear, mistrust and bravery that existed in Spain during the Civil War. I so enjoyed reading it that it was with a sense of disappointment that I remembered it was only a short story and here I was already at the end. Harlond should consider reworking it into a full length novel; all the ingredients are there. It is also a book that young readers would enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2014Based on a true event at the brink of the Spanish Civil War this short story gives a great insight into the terrible pressures rural communities were under during the time period. In a poor rural community in Spain Paco tries to make some extra money for his family by bringing in black market goods at night and selling them on. One night he encounters the military and his efforts to appear an innocent man coming home backfire and they spy his beautiful stallion. The outcome challenges the family’s courage and daring.
A wonderful little read that beautifully evokes the country side and the time period with an added dash of suspense that makes it very satisfying.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2015This is another heartrending action packed tale set within the timeline of the Spanish Civil War, in which J.G. Harlond reveals life behind the frontline and of those who find themselves caught in the crossfire between warring factions. Even the mobilisation of troops, militia, whatever can prove dangerous on mountain trails that were once safe for those who trek them by moonlight, more especially for a small-time smuggler. But in this cracking little story it is a boy who becomes a gallant hero, and all because of a horse... Need I say more? Read and enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2014A boy tries to protect the family’s beautiful stallion and his father tries to protect the whole family. The stark, impossible choices are written with an insider’s knowledge of Spain, the people and the history, all conveyed in a long story that focuses on the invasion of war itself into everyday life of ordinary people. I was drawn into those choices, worrying about what I would do if it were me, feeling the tensions, understanding that the consequences of any decision could be fatal.

5.0 out of 5 stars As she explains in a note at the end of ...
As she explains in a note at the end of her story, J.G.Harlond takes an actual event from Spain in 1936 which she heard about from a resident of the village near where she lives. On this basis she has built a quite enthralling story. It can be read in a half-hour but the sense of dread and oppression of Spain at the opening of the Civil War, when nobody knew if they could trust their neighbors, will stay with the reader for a long time. I worked briefly in Spain just after the death of Franco and in the period before the first free elections were held for some forty years I remember the sense of fear and foreboding that still hung over the country lest teh events of 1936 were repeated. Ms. Harlond does well to evoke the atmosphere of that dreadful year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Evocative short story
JG Harlond takes us to Andalucìa at the beginning of the Spanish civil war to meet Diego, a 'contrabandista', and his family. Diego's son Paco is desperate for his father's approval, even if it means break the law. The Guardia are everywhere and neighbours are no longer to be trusted - has 8 year old Paco inherited his father's cunning and courage?
In this short story the author captures perfectly both the uncertainty of the time and the guile needed to survive, leaving the reader with a warm glow and the feeling that yes, the underdog does, sometimes, get the last laugh.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and recommend that you do too.
