Little Dead Red Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 60 ratings

The Wolf is roaming the city in this Bram Stoker Award-winning Psychological Horror novella, and he must be stopped.

Grim Marie knows far too much about the wolves of the world, a world where little girls go missing. After all, she had married one before she/he showed his claws, and what that wolf did to her little girl was unforgiveable. Grim Marie isn’t certain if she can ever forgive herself for putting her Little Aleta in harm’s way.

When Grandmother becomes ill, Aleta offers to take the bus through the concrete forest to Grandmother’s house to bring her some goodies. She knows the way. What could possibly go wrong?

In this modern day retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf takes to the city streets to capture his prey, but the hunter is close behind him. With Grim Marie on the prowl, the hunter becomes the hunted.

Wolves pad through the darkest kind of fairytale: one that can come true.

Interview with the Author:
Congrats on winning the Bram Stoker award for Little Dead Red, Mercedes. What does this mean for you as an author?

Mercedes: Thank you so much, Joe! This was my first nomination, and winning for my first nom simply blew me away. It’s validation for me. I have three small kids at home and I’m always trying to fit my writing in where I can. Writing is my own little luxury that is just for me, my own selfish pleasure, and I constantly feel torn spending that time on myself instead of doing something for somebody else. This award means that readers are aware of my work. It means they took the time to read and to vote, that my work was weighed, measured, and found valuable. It’s one of the most touching experiences of my life.

Did writing this book affect you personally in any way?

Mercedes: It affected me greatly. I tried to capture the horror of their situation (abuse/kidnapping/murder/quest for justice) without making it sensational or trivializing the importance. While Little Dead Red is a fictional story, it delves deep into very real, painful issues. I wanted to treat this tale with the respect it deserved. I cried in parts while I wrote it, and I cried when I finished it. I love Aleta and Grimm Marie so much. They deserve all of the beautiful things of the world for their bravery.

Why should readers give Little Dead Red a try?

Mercedes: It’s a very realistic story written with heart and care. While the subject matter is dark, it’s also very important. This story is a social statement. It’s an exploration. Hopefully it will make us want to do better, to be heroes and support for those who are grasping. It’s also written quite prettily, and I hope that will be a breath of fresh air to readers.

In a recent publication, Caitlin R. Kiernan said that she hated/strongly disliked the classification of longer works, that is, not poetry or short stories, as novellas or, worse yet, novelettes. Most likely this work by Mercedes M. Yardley, "Little Dead Red," will be considered as either a novella or novelette. What I want to say is that I consider it a novel, and I consider it, as with all of Yardley's work that I have read to date, brilliant. This is an entry into an emerging genre, that of retelling well-known fairy-tales and making the old theme sing with new life and/or meaning.
"Little Dead Red" is a retelling of "Little Red Riding Hood" and it is set in the present day. In short, Marie is a mother of a 12 year old daughter, Aleta, who is about to set out to take freshly made soup and other food to her grandmother, Marie's mother, at a nursing facility. She never makes it and the mystery of what happened to her is then unfolded in brilliant plotting and writing by Ms Yardley. Marie knew she had saved Aleta previously by discovering that her third husband had been abusing a much younger Aleta, and seeing to it that that husband was tried and convicted and was in jail. In her mind, Aleta was safe from the wolf who had abused her, but she knew that Aleta was very vibrant as she entered puberty and could attract many sorts of "wolves" in her daily life.
After two months missing, the police tell Marie, now called "Grim Marie" in the story, that they have found her daughter's remains. It is a horrible situation, the body has been ravaged by feral animals and very little remains of Aleta, but there is enough of Aleta's remains and her favorite bright red "hoodie" to make a positive identification.
Marie meets the policeman assigned to the case and he and his wife are extremely sympathetic and actually befriend Marie. In becoming close to the policeman's wife, Marie, noting and trusting both the policeman and his wife, speaks to the wife of her guilt at sending her daughter out while she indulged herself in a luxurious bath. It was during that time that Aleta was taken. I don't usually use actual quotes in my reviews but I want to make an exception here. I do this because it is a very surprising response by the wife, but is also a stellar example of Yardley's unique prose style, which is very sensual/erotic, even while describing or writing about the most gruesome/horrific of things. Here is the wife's response after Grim Marie has talked about her possible guilt, and wondered aloud about if having "Wolf's blood" (meaning the killer's should she hunt him down and kill him) on her hands could possibly ameliorate her guilt. With Marie expecting condemnation, Yardley describes her response: She simply looked Marie dead in the eye and said solemnly, “Darling, you are going through something no mother should ever have to go through. I see my husband pouring over papers and pictures and chasing after every scrap of information and evidence he can. He’s done things that keep him awake at night. But he’s a good man, and I love him.” Her eyes glittered in a way that reminded Marie of sharpened cutlery. It was the soft, sexy, slow slide of blade against skin. “If such things could absolve a person, then I would advise him, or her, to do as much as possible to make sure that tainted blood flows. Make it flow, dear one.”* I find, especially, the use of "sharpened cutlery" followed by sensual/sexual reference to using such cutlery to be an example of Yardley at her best. Adding to that effect is Yardley's ingenious use of alliteration. NO ONE I have read over the years can write with such sensuality.
From that point, the remainder of the story unfolds and what Grim Marie endures to catch the man she suspects is grim indeed. The book ends with a shock and I am not telling that as it would be a spoiler of epic proportion.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If I could I would give it ten stars out of five. It's that good, in this reviewer's opinion.

I waffled between four and five stars on this. I really wish most places rated on a ten-scale system, as I would give this a solid 4.5. Mr. Hempel's narration was spot on and perfect. His voice drew me into this dark tale about grief and the want for justice and revenge. The story itself was a little disjointed, which made it a touch hard to listen to at times, but it was entirely appropriate for the mood. At points, the lead character Marie was on the point of sliding into insanity, sort of skirting the edges as she grieved for her murdered child, and burned to see justice done. I enjoyed the tale immensely as it was dark, but it was very sad. Very, very sad. I can't give out too many details of WHY I found it so sad because it would give away spoilers, and that I do not want to do. Why not five stars then? That disjointed-ness which added to the mood detracted from story, weirdly enough. In places, it seemed... too... overwrought? Which I can understand a parent grieving, but it was just a bit too much for me.

However, this is a stellar story, and, while I might have had a little trouble here and there, overall, it was a grim, dark, and delightful tale and it definitely has enticed me to check out the rest of the author's offerings. As you can tell from the review, I listened to the audio book version, but I DID enjoy the tale so much I bought it as well!

LITTLE DEAD RED by Mercedes M. Yardley should have a trigger warning. While the author is careful not to go into details, hints of rape and domestic abuse set the foundation of the story. This is absolutely one of the most horrifying and traumatizing stories I've ever read, and so well-written, not a single solitary graphic scene was needed to convey the twisted evil of the wolves.

Readers are never shown the wolf attacks, but Yardley reveals the devastating outcomes and gut-wrenching emotions with such skill, one can easily imagine the hot breath and sharp teeth of the wolves, without witnessing the desecration of the flesh.

Absolutely no surprise this story won a Bram Stoker award. Recommending to all horror fans who can manage the content.

Damn... damn. "Little Dead Red" is a test, a soul check. If something doesn't stir deep down inside of you, if you don't experience at least a slight sting in the eyes, if you don't receive a solid squeeze to the feels whilst reading this novella then you are a lost cause, damaged beyond repair. And I'm sorry.

This piece, another in a long line of immensely satisfying reads from Mercedes M. Yardley, is the darkest thing I read in 2015. Prose like a river sweeping you along, sweeping you under if you're not careful, It's an emotional journey of a mother seeking answers, purpose, revenge after the loss of her only child.

Like all of MMY's work the characters that populate this night terror twist on a fairy tale are flesh and blood and their essence spills upon the page, staining your fingertips. And Marie is the centerpiece, Happy Marie, Grim Marie. She hurts, and so do you. She makes irrational but emotional choices, and you support her, you encourage her. She falls apart, you are already in pieces.

The only thing you can do is get up and live. Beware the wolf.

Place little dead red on a playlist with your favorite bottle of hooch, Kyle M. Scott's "Where the Dead Ones Play" (formerly Protection) & Jonathan Winn's "Eidolon Avenue"

I couldn't read this fast enough. It's a dark, grim story that demands to be told. Although I had an idea of what was going to happen, it didn't lessen the impact. Recommended for anyone who likes an emotional connection with their stories, but do check the TW if needed - it's a hard read. An easy 5 stars.

This was an absolute heartbreaker of a story. The depth of suffering of the mother for her daughter, the horrific lengths she would go to to try and catch her daughter's killer and the betrayal of the innocent by one who is supposed to be the guardian of justice all combine perfectly in this wonderful little book.
