Dead Drop: A historical thriller you don't want to miss... (Julia McAllister Victorian Mysteries Book 4) Kindle Edition
The truth hurts, but secrets kill…
1896, England
Seeing an easy way to pay off her debts, Julia McAllister takes in three female lodgers from a travelling show.
With musical halls more popular than ever, Buffalo Buck’s Mild West is the perfect antidote to the noise and smoke belching out of the factories, and the tide of Julia’s fortune quickly turns.
Until one of the three girls is found hanging under a bridge.
Julia doesn’t believe it was suicide. Annie had been excited about the future, not depressed.
And when another body is found on the railway line, a distraught widower, inspired by Julia’s role as crime scene photographer, asks for her help as the police are refusing to give out any details.
When Julia raises the matter with Detective Inspector John Collingwood, he explains that they’re keeping the case close to their chest because the body had ligature marks, showing he’d been chained up. Their fears are that this is just the tip of a particularly nasty iceberg.
Is Annie’s death connected to the body on the railway? Can Julia work with Collingwood to solve the mystery?
Or will the secrets they uncover put their lives in grave danger…?
DEAD DROP is the fourth book in the Julia McAllister Victorian Mystery series: historical romance murder mysteries with a courageous woman sleuth embarking on a traditional British, private investigation in nineteenth-century London.

About the author

Marilyn Todd is a critically acclaimed author of short stories and historical thrillers, who "paints antiquity with a particularly suspenseful brush and skillfully tangled plots" (Booklist). Her Roman series features "a gorgeous rich bitch, plotting and spying to survive adverse fortune" (Daily Mail). The Greek novels feature "an abundance of historical tidbits and robust prose" (Kirkus Reviews). All her work embraces humour, suspense and a lively sense of drama, often inspired by the places she visits.
In 2015, her short story "Blood Red Roses" won one of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine's prestigious Readers Awards.
The year before, "The Wickedest Town in the West" scooped the same award.
And another story, "Room for Improvement", about quickie divorces in 1950s Brighton, was nominated for a Shamus.
She and her husband currently live on a French hilltop surrounded by vineyards and woods, and when she isn't killing people, Marilyn enjoys cooking. Which is pretty much the same thing.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have read every book in this series and this one is so good! Julia needs to pay off debts so she agrees to house three ladies from a travelling troupe in town for a show. When one of them is murdered, she goes undercover to help solve the mystery and help out the troupe. Unfortunately, while trying to help solve one crime, Julia herself becomes involved in a separate case that puts her life in danger but doesn't realize it until it is too late..
A gripping plot, I couldn't put it down. I look forward to the next book and thank #NetGalley for the opportunity to read #DeadDrop.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe fourth entry in Marilyn Todd's Victorian era mystery series and the best of four mavelous thrillers. The plot keeps you guessing until all is revealled in literally the last dozen pages. I highly recommend Dead Drop as well as the first three entries in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI've read this whole series and this book is the best yet! Murder is all around, and Julia is distracted by the traveling Wild West Show, which she becomes a part of for a time. Meanwhile, her sometime love and always cop John is scoping out the murderer (s). Is Julia's life in danger in the show or is there a murderer hiding in plain sight? READ this! Wonderfully entertaining!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe series started out great, good but flawed characters, interesting backgrounds, complex plots. This book is sloppy and sensationalized. One huge flaw is that the copy being sold to the public has not been completely edited, as is shown in all the parts crossed out at the end. What had been a good look at the darker parts of Victorian society went overboard into unremitting evil. There was a lot of explicit sex and violence that did nothing to forward the story line. Finally, the protagonist ended up behaving in a way that was out of character and served no purpose except to make me not interested in reading about her again. It looks like this series is over, only a little too late. High hopes dashed.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot as good as the last ones the carnival was too much and filled too much of the storyline hope the next one is better
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2022Format: KindleDead Drop is the fourth Julia McAllister period mystery by Marilyn Todd. Released 29th Dec 2021 by Sapere, it's 230 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free (along with the rest of the series).
This is a very well written period murder mystery with a strong, intelligent, and sympathetic female protagonist. This is the fourth book in the series, but the mystery is self contained and all background info is written into the story. The plotting is spare and tightly controlled. The technical aspects of the writing are well done (dialogue, characterization, etc) and unobtrusive. It's an engrossing read. It's not a cozy, it's serious and in some places gritty. The crime scene descriptions which Julia photographs were so well described they raised goosebumps.
It's always fun to find a new to me author and series to read. I would recommend this one to fans of period mysteries. I'm looking forward to more from this author. This is the fourth book, and the series would make a good candidate for a rainy weekend binge read.
Four and a half stars. I really enjoyed this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGood story, great characters. I've read the others and will read the next when it comes out. The Kindle version needs some tidying up though. There are some crossed out sections where text was changed. Not enough to ruin the story though

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong female protagonist
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEnjoyed the four books & the 4 different storylines. Well developed characters. Only one bugbear: Why is Bugs not mentioned again after his death although the models are referred to.?
