- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLondon, 1902. Dr. James Carlyle of the London Hospital in Whitechapel has discovered something very odd. He’s examining the body of a dead man and discovers his fingerprints match those of a criminal – a man hung some time before. How can a man die twice?
Carlyle calls upon Matthew West, a Wesleyan minister serving in a mission who’s worked with Carlyle on a previous case. West, as it turns out, was the minister who accompanied the criminal to his hanging. But he didn’t see anything unusual; in fact, he didn’t see anything at all, as he always shuts his eyes when he attends an execution.
But West goes to Newgate Prison to look at the visitor ledgers, and he discover that a woman had visited the condemned man four times before his hanging. He also notes who else attended the execution. And then he, Carlyle, and Carlyle’s very modern and outspoken daughter Adelaide discover that everyone involved in the execution are dying one by one. And Matthew West may be next. Com;licating Matthew’s life is the appearance of an older women who seems to be doing her best to seduce the minister.
Matthew is in love with Adelaide, but without a parish of his own and a stable income, he has no means to provide for a wife. For her part, Adelaide seems to go out of her way to keep the minister at arm’s length, even as he helps her with an election campaign. That is, until he’s threatened first with seduction and then bodily harm.
“Death Comes But Twice” by David Field is the second of four books in the Carlyle & West Victorian Mystery Series. The first is “Interviewing the Dead,” the third is “Confronting the Invisible,” and the fourth is “Death Among the Nightingales.” It’s a historical mystery that has a fascinating premise supported by rich historical detail and a growing romance. That detail includes the then nascent science of fingerprints, which were just coming into use by police organizations but had yet to be tested in court.
Field also written six historical novels set in Tudor England and eight novels in the Esther and Jack Enright Mystery Series. A native of Nottingham, England, he practiced and taught criminal law for his professional career. He now lives in Australia.
It’s a fun, enjoyable series, full of late Victorian and early Edwardian history.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2021Format: KindleVerified Purchasethe answer was obvious but the figuring it out was well done. the romance was obnoxious. i feel bad for the curate’s wife. matthew did more in this mystery than the last. and the reveal of the murderer was more traditionally timed (which i prefer). what sort of twist to the style will happen in the next book?
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt is enjoyable to feel like an active perticipant in trying to solve a series of murders. It can also be an axhausting bit of work. Fortunately for our characters, DEATH COMES BUT TWICE requires a period of months to solve during which time so many other events are also taking place. Very enjoyable.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2020Format: KindleCan two bodies have the same fingerprints? Not likely, according to Dr. James Carlyle, who has been taking fingerprints of all the hanged prisoners and murder victims in London. His friend Wesleyan minister Matthew West officiated at the hanging of one of the two men so Carlyle is able to question him about the execution. This leads to serious doubts about the first death and the identity of the second victim. Adelaide, Dr. Carlyle's daughter and assistant, a firm believer in woman's rights is running for a seat on the London county council. Needing all the help she can get, she allows West to aid her in campaigning. A mysterious widow also wants West's help in abolishing capital punishment, a cause West believes in.
Death Comes But Twice gives us a picture of London,1893; both fashionable and criminal. With the aid of the new science of fingerprinting Carlyle and West are able to solve the various crimes. The romance between West and Adelaide comes to a happy conclusion. This is a well-written and researched historical crime story with something for every taste, mystery, romance, and humor. A pleasant and diverting read.
Thank you to Sapere Books for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2020Format: KindleThis second in the Carlyle and West series is as entertaining as the first. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Matthew and Adelaide, and the secondary characters, better; they're becoming old friends. The historical facts are well researched, particularly the use of fingerprints as a new form of identification, which we take so for granted today. I like the gentleness of these novels: despite the slow pace of the investigation and the action, it's still gripping, and I read it in two sittings. I'm eagerly awaiting the next in the series. My thanks to Sapere Books for the opportunity to read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2020Format: KindleI enjoyed the mystery of Death Comes But Twice, with its surprising twists and turns. I could have done without the love story between two of the main characters, but it didn't take away from solving the crimes that kept piling up through the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2020Format: KindleAnother fine installment in this series. I like the characters and the inventive way they used to get fingerprints. I enjoyed it!
I’m looking forward to their next mystery.
Thanks to Sapere for the copy
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI've got to say this was one fantastic read for me. It kept you guessing the whole time. The emotions between Matthew and Adelaide throughout the story finally come to a head in the end, so much so that I fertile I was right there with them. Great ending to a fantastic book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and interesting read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAn easy read, full of Victorian interest and information. I really liked the atmosphere of the book, the characters were well drawn and the plot - though not particularly robust - moved along quickly. A great book for curling up and spending the evening with. I'm looking forward to reading the others in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Victorian mystery
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseAt the time of writing this review about the second book in the series I have in fact got to the fourth book. Whilst these books are not long they are well written with good main characters which have developed as the series progresses. The detail of Victorian London is excellent. The books have been well researched by the author and I like reading his notes at the end which expand on the incidents and locations described in each book. Thoroughly recommend this Victorian London mysteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a great book. Carlyle and West are developing into a great pairing, and, of course Adelaide is bulldozering her way forward.
The plot was very well constructed. I love the nod to history too. On to number 3. Thank you Mr. David Field.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but not as good as it could be.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed this enough to go on to read the next but I am irritated by the overuse of modern idioms and vernacular. Background is quite good but some loose plotting along with the dialogue, let it down. It could partly be my frame of I nd though and all reviews are just opinion and subject ive of course. course
For me it's not in the same league as Ann Perry's though I enjoyed the later stories she wrote less than the earlier ones. I prefer J.C. Briggs books of Charles Dickens era better too and Mary Kingswood's set in earlier years are very good too with many of them combining romance with crime solving and they have more engaging characters. I wanted to like Mathew and Adelaide more and be more engaged with them but I find them a bit lacking. Again that's only my subjective view. I readily admit I am unlikely to be able to write even half as well, especially dialogue. I would love doing the background research but putting that into a readable and enjoyable story is something else entirely and plotting would probably be another challenge I'd be unlikely to risen to
