Death on the Diagonal (Robin Vaughan Equestrian Mysteries Book 4) Kindle Edition

3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

A gripping equestrian murder mystery! Perfect for fans of Dick Francis, Leigh Hearon, Mary Monica Pulver and Laura Crum.

Can Robin uncover the murderous secrets of a sleepy small town?

Texas, 1990s

Bead, Texas, is a one-horse town if ever there was one. Or at least that’s what
Robin Vaughan thinks when she and her husband Jeet travel there for the funeral of Jeet’s old friend Townsend ‘Towns’ Loving, the editor of Bead’s local newspaper.

So when Towns’s widow
Della asks Jeet to stay on as temporary editor, Robin isn’t exactly jumping for joy.

But Bead isn’t quite the sleepy backwater it seems, and soon Robin’s caught up in a bizarre chain of events including being imprisoned in a sweltering hot trailer and accidentally stumbling on to a film set.

And along the way she makes a discovery that leads her to question the police’s account of what happened to Towns…

Was Townsend Loving’s death really accidental? How did such a good-hearted man come to have so many enemies in Bead?

And can Robin discover the truth without becoming murder victim number two?

The fourth in Carolyn Banks’s Robin Vaughan series, DEATH ON THE DIAGONAL is a lively and entertaining equestrian murder mystery.

From the Inside Flap

--The New York Times
BEAD, TEXAS, IS A DEAD END.
Little white houses, the yard-of-the-week competition, new hanging files in the insurance company--that's about it for Bead. Not even the hit-and-run death of the editor of the Bead Weekly rouses this Texas backwater from its torpor.
But nosy newcomer Robin Vaughan, hunting for a place to board her two cherished horses, sniffs trouble in this tumbleweed paradise. While her husband, Jeet, settles in as the new editor of the newspaper, reckless Robin asks incautious questions. Why is a famous equestrienne, a star in the exclusive world of dressage, holed up on a rundown farm? Who's the lurking local clone of Norman Bates in Psycho? Is it senility that makes old Boone DeWitt claim he's oil rich? Who killed nice Townsend Loving and why? Before she knows it, Robin's headed for a dead end of her own. . . .
"Banks's technique . . . is as sharp as any killer's knife blade."

This book wasn't my favorite in this series. The premise of moving her and her horses to a different town when her husband was working a temporary job there just didn't sit right with me. We horse people don't like to upset our horse's routines and living quarters for something that short term. Also, being from a small town, I wasn't happy with the MC's disparaging remarks about Bead. Overlooking those things, as usual, the book is well written and the plot moves along nicely.

Allright, compared to the other 'Banks, this one's story seems a bit wobbly. But it's funny. Carolyn Banks has a sense of humor and reality that reminds me of the old tv-series "Soap". Really, they should make her books into a tv-serie. I'll watch.

I haven't read any of her other work, but judged as a mystery and a horse novel it was OK. I wasn't particularly impressed by the plotline as it tended to be slow in many places. The ending, however, was an excellent surprise. This isn't a bad book, but I wouldn't read it again.

3.0 out of 5 stars This was a disappointment

Being a dressage rider I've enjoyed this series with all the fun and pretty accurate horsey and dressagey references - even though the plots are a bit predictable. But this book 4 was rushed and confusing, it felt like the author only had half the time she needed to write the book. I may soldier on to read the last book in the series but then again maybe not...
