About the author

Graham Brack has been writing for as long as he can remember, but now concentrates on crime fiction. Three times shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association's Debut Dagger prize (in 2011, 2014 and 2016) he never quite managed to win it.
Graham lives with his wife Gillian in Northamptonshire and has two children and three granddaughters, who are too young to be allowed to read Grandad's books, so he provides other stories for them.
He trained and practised as a pharmacist and has also written about football, rugby, cricket and medical law. He is an ordained priest in the Church of England.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2021Another excellent entry in the Slonsky series. Funny, exciting and a great fast-moving plot.
I love how Slonsky was made Acting Captain, and immediately made Peiperova Acting Acting Captain. She is a great addition to the series. I just hope Navratil can lose some of his uptight behavior!
I've never been to Prague or really to central Europe at all. I love reading thrillers set in different countries and eras of history, and this series a a great addition to my list. I've read the author's Mercurious series, which is where I discovered him. I love the humor Brack puts in his writing.
Going to keep reading through the rest!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2021I love the setting, the plot is really well thought out and above all, l love Lieutenant Slonsky!! He's wily, he's gruff and tough, but with a heart of gold. He's a criminal's worst nightmare-an honest cop who loves what he does.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2018This is classic Czech humor at it’s best. It’s a wonderfully written detective procedural set in the years after the Velvet Revolution where Czechoslovakia overthrew communism and split into two countries and a 30 year old mystery lands in the lap of Prague’s “laziest detective”.
This is wonderfully written, contrasts the conflicts of the socialist era and the capitalist era with the very best of Czech cynical humor. It’s a wonderfully dry, funny - and still deadly serious detective procedural.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2018Fun to read but not as good as the first two parts. The resolution of the case was a little too far fetched for my taste and did not really develop as integral part of the story

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2021Well-written series with great characters, sharply hilarious dialogue, and a terrific setting. Think a funnier, edgier Columbo in an authentically gritty Prague.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2018Many thanks to the author / Sapere Books / Caoimhe O'Brien for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
DEATH ON DUTY is the third international crime thriller in the detective series featuring Lieutenant Josef Slonský.
Lt. Josef Slonsky is possibly the laziest policeman in Prague, probably in Central Europe. He rarely sees the need to rush and is frequently found conserving his energy with his feet on his desk. He meets with his protege and other members of law enforcement to discuss business over beer and sausages ..sometimes a biscuit. Detecting for 40 years, he is due to retire soon.
He has a wry sense of humor that not everyone understands and a strong stubborn streak that does him well. He doesn't exactly cross that line, but comes close enough to cause all kinds of problems.
Lieutenant Josef Slonský, along with his dynamic officers, Kristýna Peiperová and Jan Navrátil are sent to check with their informers after the Bosnian government send them an alert about possible criminals who have escaped.
As usual, Slonsky sits in a restaurant across from a hotel where these men may be hiding, and sends in Navratil to check it out .. and sends Kristyna back to the home office to arrange a Christmas party.
An undercover policeman is stabbed to death one sunny afternoon right cross from the hotel that has been watched. Who knew he was undercover? How did he mange to be killed without any witnesses in the brightness of the day?
It's up to Slonksy to find the killer/killers before anymore lives are snuffed out.
Lt. Slonsky is an unforgettable character.. reminding me of a teddy bear but with a brain and the smarts to always manage to solve whatever crime he's working on. But this time around, he may not be as smart as the killer.
His wry sense of humor and strong stubborn streak may be his saving grace in this gripping crime fiction. I look forward to his next adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series of 1980 Czech police procedurals.
Josef Slonsky seems most concerned with stopping for coffee and pastries, or beer and sausages, or if neither of those are available he loves to take a nap. Despite this, he manages to outwit crime syndicates, Bosnian people traffickers and corrupt officers, with the help of his two young sidekicks. I love these books, which always make me laugh. It also interesting to think about life in post-Communist Prague, with all the legacy of that era. Don’t be put off by the names. At first it is difficult to tell the difference between Smejkal and Savovic, or Dolezal and Dvornik, but you will get there in the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read 1 and 2 first for maximum effect
From sausage fest to people trafficking, Slonsky reigns supreme. Onto numbers 4 and 5 with vigour

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb series which seems to get better
It is fairly unusual for a crime writer to have such a consistent series as this. The Czech background is so well done and there are always little cameo shots of just how grim life before the Velvet Revolution actually was. The plotting is consistent and balances well with the continuing development of all the characters; no cardboard here .
Whilst one can read them in any order ,I would suggest starting with the first one. The synopsis tells just enough . Unlike in so many crime series I do feel there are quite a few books to be mined from this seam . A most enjoyable set of books and so fairly priced .

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read
Sadly this is currently the last of an excellent series. Atmosphere, thrills and humour are all present in abundance. Slonsky compares very favourably or even exceeds Rebus - and that is high praise indeed. Excellent characters, excellent plots and copious beer make the trilogy excellent reads...not to mention the sausages!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, interesting storyline and intelligent humour
Another excellent yarn from Graham Brack that further develops Slonsky and his team. It has interesting plot twists, intelligent humour and is obviously well researched to provide political and geographic context.
I'm really looking forward to future books in this series
