BEHIND THE SCENES
Where possible, I try to visit the locations I write about, or at least ones that are similar. This is obviously not always practical, and with the likes of Google Earth, today’s authors have an amazing resource that can take them anywhere in the world. But it can’t replicate the sounds and smells of a place, or how you might feel actually being there.
In Deep Impact many of the underwater locations described are real. When we first meet Suki’s character in an underwater tunnel - that’s real. When she’s trapped by the Russians in a cave - that’s real, and the cove in Japan that traumatizes her as a child, that is also real, along sadly with the events that take place there.
When writing dramatic sequences, having actually experienced, to some degree, what the characters are going through, allows the author a freedom and authenticity to take the reader right to the heart of the action and make them feel as though they are really there.
This is no more true than for the typhoon sequence in Deep Impact.
In 2013 I was diving in Palau when Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines resulting in the death of over six thousand people. Before reaching the Philippines it had swept through Palau. Most of the devastation was in the more northerly islands, and while further south, only the tail end of the storm was felt, it was enough to flatten palm trees and create a terrifying few hours until it had past. No amount of video or second-hand stories can replicate the experience or fear that was felt at the time.
Of course, to tell a story, reality is always heightened to some degree and things are pushed to the limit, but sometimes real life can be exciting enough!

About the author

Throughout my life I have always tried to seek out adventure, whether real or imaginary. Much of this has taken place in, on, or under the water.
My love of diving has allowed me to explore the oceans of the world and also work extensively in the film and TV industry.
This spirit has filtered through to my creative writing, which includes the John McCready thrillers - a smart, fast paced action/adventure series with twists and turns right up to the end.
In the real world, LIGHTS! CAMERA! SUB ACTION! takes you behind the scenes of underwater projects in the film and TV industry.
But the one thing all the books have in common, is a sense of excitement and the unknown; whether journeying with a hero battling the odds on thrilling and dangerous adventures, or diving sunken shipwrecks and coral reefs in the company of sharks, manta rays and other creatures of the deep.
The aim, above all, is to entertain, inform and surprise...

- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025I have read two of the authors books and the DEEP IMPACT story is absolutely amazing. The characters are so interesting and the story is so good I haven’t done anything except read for two days. Thank you.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2023Getting involved in governmental international affairs is dicey at best and fatal at worst. But when you're the only person in the world who can do the job, needs must. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2024I love action and complex plot books. This author and book hits a bulls-eye and keeps you wanting more. The weave of military, non military and espionage is very satisfying.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2022Would you take a job without knowing all the details?
. . . or most of the details.
John takes on a job that is complicated and dangerous. He is committed to completing the job while risking everything for someone else.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2022After reading the first chapter, no one can ignore the compulsion to keep reading, and reading. The first 70% is riveting. For a short time, the story feels long. Then the action picks up. The last sentence of the story is just perfert.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2022I really enjoyed the emotion and the edge of your seat action not to mention three twist you don't see coming. I would recommend the book for all readers. Ther is something for everyone in there.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2022I have just finished reading Deep Impact. Mike Seares has a way of twisting the plot in different ways, that makes a person want to continue reading. Great book
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2022Book seemed well written with engaging characters but I have problems with some of the action. The main character, John McCready , is coerced by the UK government into retrieving a computer drive from the bottom of the ocean. McCready is successful but leaves his business partner on the bottom of the ocean in a powerless submersible. He rides like out a typhoon on the surface until, Suki, a young Japanese woman who had been trafficked by the yakuza (sp) shows up to steal anything valuable to turn over to her current master. McCready resist and she leaves empty handed. Then the Russians show up and shoot McCready. Suki rescues McCready and gets him to the hospital then steals the drive and lures the Russians away. McCready heals up enough to contact his handler and leave the hospital. He tracks down Suki and together they retrieve the drive during which Suki kills her master and is truly free for the first time in years. Here is where things get weird. Suki and McCready return to Suki's shack and have sex. Never mind that the Russians are still out there. During the night a woman McCready had gotten close to in the last book tracks McCready down at Suki's shack and walks in on them. Who travels to a different country and walks into a strangers house without knocking? Claire leaves in tears. In the morning, Suki takes a shower while McCready eats breakfast and who should show up but the Russians. Surprise! The Russians now have the drive and the main bar Russian also takes Suki because he had a thing for torturing Asian women. McCready hatches a plan to rescue Suki from a secret Russian submarine bar and calls on a Arab prince that owes him a favor. McCready is able to infiltrate the sub base with 2 Arab body guards to help. They find Suki but leave the Russian bad guy alive who then finds them down and kills The 2 Arab body guards possibly because they neglected to wear body armor. Suki drowns in cold water and the author states that people have been revived after being submerged for up to 12 minutes. I live in North Dakota US, and know people have been revived after being submerged much, much longer than 12 minutes. At the beginning of the book the author states that the book is written in British English which was fine for the most part, but at one point Claire is looking thru her moving boxes for a particular item and finds it with labeled on top with ( I forget the British word used) but looked it up and found it's brand of ink pen, like an American would say Bic. Claire is an American but regardless, why not just say pen?

It just kept getting more unbelievable, as it came to a conclusion there was another problem that had to be solved.
