Deke (Fake Boyfriend Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 5,693 ratings

Ollie

Word of advice: don’t come out to random guys in public restrooms. Even if they’re charming and adorably nerdy and offer to help.

My family believe I can’t be happy if I’m not out to the world. I have a bitter ex-boyfriend and an unstable NHL career to show for it. A fake boyfriend seems like an easy and quick solution to get my family off my back, and this guy is volunteering. I take him up on it without asking his name.

I really should’ve asked for his name.

Lennon

Word of advice: learn how to introduce yourself properly.

In my defense, I don’t recognize Ollie Strömberg right away. I cover football, not hockey.

I’m not supposed to see him again, and he’s never supposed to find out I’m a reporter.

That all changes when my editor reassigns me.

It’s a lesson I should’ve learned by now. Nothing’s changed since high school. Jocks still hate nerds. But even worse, athletes hate journalists. Especially ones who know their secret.

*Deke is a full-length MM novel with a HFN/HEA and no cliffhanger*

Fake boyfriends, reporter/athlete trope, entertaining
Hockey Romance? Count me in! Deke is the third book in Eden's Fake Boyfriend series and the last with the fake boyfriend trope itself. And it covers Lennon and Ollie's story to love. Lennon showed up at the end of Trick Play, while Ollie was first introduced at the end of Fake Out. And how their fake relationship comes to be? With a spur of the moment idea! Ollie is being nagged by his family to come out of the closet. In the NHL there are no out players and Ollie fears coming out would effect his carreer. That already broken his last realtionship. At a family dinner he meets a cute guy in the bathroom and somehow they end up spending the night pretending they are together in front of his family. And yes, if you were wondering that guy is Lennon... though Ollie doesn't know his real name. Lennon is a sports journalist. The last person Ollie should come out to, but he doesn't know that. And Lennon is not about to out someone! And that's how, six months later, when the truth about Lennon's profession comes out, Ollie freaks. Ollie's struggles with and fears from coming out and losing hockey which he really just wants to play is a powerful storyline. Add the stifflingly supportive family who pressures him and the fact that noone has come out yet in hockey and it is an obvious choice to hide who he is from the world. Lennon as a gay sports reporter suffers the same discrimination and prejudice as Ollie fears. Shouldn't he be writing fashion instead of sport? And all he wants is to normalize gay man in sports. And Ollie. He wants Ollie too. Their dance around each other, fighting their attraction is sweet. Lennon's support for Ollie is admireable. Ollie understanding and rearranging his priorities for the first time is amazing to see. And the family ribbing, friendly banthering with their friends and family is very enjoyable. All in all, I adore this story as well in the series! Why? Just because. It's sweet, lovely, hot and honset. And just makes me feel good even affer three rereads!

Saying I love this one even more than the last one seems to be a running theme for me when it comes to this series! But I can't help it's true! Each installment gets better and better! Lennon and Ollie are so great together! I enjoyed just about everything this book had to offer and am looking forward to the next installment!

Summary: Ollie is a closeted NHL player (closeted to the public anyway). He’s recently been traded to New York, and his still getting over breaking up with his longtime boyfriend who couldn’t stand the closet anymore. His family are pressuring him to come out so he can get back together with Ash, but Ollie doesn’t want to do this. So when he meets a cute guy in the bathroom of a gay bar/restaurant, and finds himself sharing his story, and the cute guy offers to pretend to be his boyfriend for the evening to get Ollie’s family off his back for a while, Ollie says yes. Lennon honestly didn’t recognize Ollie when they met in the bathroom and he made his offer. Even though he’s super attracted to Ollie, once he realizes who Ollie is, Lennon’s kind of glad they won’t see each other again because he’s sure Ollie would freak out if he knew Lennon is a sports reporter. Six months later, not having been able to forget Ollie, he’s not sure he’s glad or not to be reassigned to cover hockey, with special attention to Ollie’s team.

Review: I think this might be my favorite installment in the Fake Boyfriend series so far. Ollie and Lennon are so great together. They’re funny and sweet and honest with each other. I like that they’re given time to get to know each other. I’m as much of a fan of spicy stuff as most, I guess, but I also appreciate it when it’s clear the two characters have more in common than their compatibility in the bedroom. So I kind of like that it takes a while before Ollie and Lennon get very far in that regard. I like that they truly seem to be equals in their relationship, especially since that was an issue for Ollie in the past. I like that they face real dilemmas about their relationship, too. And I like how Ollie finally comes out—the why especially (I won’t get more specific so as not to spoil anything). I also think it’s interesting to look at Ollie’s family who are super supportive and see how even in a truly supportive and loving family there can still be difficulty and conflict. It’s good to see that nuance.

And as usual, I love the side characters. Ollie’s family are really fun. Jet once again is a scene stealer—I’m really looking forward to his story. And I’m glad I discovered an offshoot collection of novellas (Fake Boyfriend Breakaways) that tells the stories of some of the side characters because I really want to know that Ash gets a HEA too. Just like with Ollie’s parents—even though I liked Lennon and could see that he and Ollie are good together, just knowing that Ollie and Ash had been childhood friends who had a four year relationship made me really sad that that wasn’t going to work out—probably because childhood bffs to lovers is one of my favorite tropes.

Ollie and Lennon are officially my favorites so far, sorry Damon and Maddox.
I love a good fake boyfriend trope, and this was lovely and with love angst to go with it. I loved how supportive Ollie's family were, even if they didn't truly understand his issue till Lennon stood up to them and pointed it out. Lennon and Jet's friendship was adorable and I'm so freaking excited about his book, he was like an excited little puppy and the "negotiating" between the two was very amusing.
The story was cute, funny and of course sexy, the low angst was great, there was an ex (Ash) who I didn't particularly like but he didn't actually cause the issues which was a nice change.
The little cameos of Matt and Noah along with Damon and Maddox was cool and love how we still get the little i sights into how they are all going. Even though this is a standalone, I would highly recommended reading both Fake Out and Trick Play as they are all interconnected with the couple's appearing and other side characters popping in (Talon and Miller 😉). I can't wait for the next two books especially Jet and his guy who we meet in Deke. Thank you Eden for giving us this lovely story of Ollie and Lennon .

Deke was book 3 in the Fake Boyfriend Series by Eden Finley.

OK, I love, love, love, love the meet cute for this story. It wasn't planned ahead, and fate totally played a part. Who knew Ollie freaking out in a restaurant bathroom would be found by Lennon. Lennon didn't even know if Ollie was gay when he offered to be his fake boyfriend to finish dinner with his family. They didn't even learn eachothers names, which is how Lennon becomes Clark because he looks like a blond Superman. It was only supposed to be one dinner and one super hot kiss goodbye. It was for a while until their paths crossed again, and Lennon's true identity is revealed.

Ollie is an NHL star who is out to his family and friends but not the world, and Lennon is a sports reporter who is assigned to follow Ollie’s team, which could lead to disaster. It takes some convincing to ensure Ollie that he won't be outed, which was never his plan. Lennon wants Ollie to shine and get the recognition he deserves.

This one was a slow burn and it was perfect for them. They had so much to figure out. I really loved that Lennon didn't try to force Ollie to do anything and truly just wanted to support him, which allowed Ollie to see what a real relationship could be. Ollie could come out publicly when he chose to on his own time.

Matt's little brother Jet is Lennon's roommate, so we got to see more of his hilarious personality😃
