Dirty Letters Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 20,427 ratings

An Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestseller.

From New York Times bestselling authors Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward comes an unexpected love story that started with a boy and girl and heats up when the man and woman reconnect.

I’d never forgotten him—a man I’d yet to meet.

Griffin Quinn was my childhood pen pal, the British boy who couldn’t have been more different from me. Over the years, through hundreds of letters, we became best friends, sharing our deepest, darkest secrets and forming a connection I never thought could break.

Until one day it did.

Then, out of the blue, a new letter arrived. A scathing one—one with eight years of pent-up anger. I had no choice but to finally come clean as to why I stopped writing.

Griffin forgave me, and somehow we were able to rekindle our childhood connection. Only now we were adults, and that connection had grown to a spark. Our letters quickly went from fun to flirty to downright dirty, revealing our wildest fantasies. So it only made sense that we would take our relationship to the next level and see each other in person.

Only Griff didn’t want to meet. He asked that I trust him and said it was for the best. But I wanted more—more Griff, in the flesh—so I took a big chance and went looking for him. People have done crazier things for love.

But what I found could change everything.

Review

“An anxious, agoraphobic heroine takes center stage in this optimistic contemporary from Keeland and Ward…Griffin and Luca’s letters are endearing and believably intimate…Readers motivated to see this unlikely heroine succeed will forgive the more fantastical indulgences of this light, escapist romance.” Publishers Weekly

Dirty Letters will have you laugh, cry, and root for this couple as you follow their tragedies and triumphs.” Fresh Fiction

“This story is filled with pain, anxiety (that is so real you can feel it), hurt, a connection that spanned over the years and miles, and a love to last forever.” Wicked Reads

“It was frustrating and sweet and beautifully romantic to see the lengths someone will go through to be with the person that their heart tells them they need, and someone who is willing to face their greatest fears in order to be with you.” Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

All The Stars!
I’m so sad this book is over. I read as slow as I could but I wish I could re read for the first time all over again. “We all have light and dark inside us, love. We try to hide the darkness from others because we’re afraid it will scare them away. But your dark doesn’t scare me, Luca. It only makes me want to hold your hand and be your light until you can find your own again. That’s what people do when they’re in love. I won’t always be able to give you your light back, because sometimes you need to find that within yourself , but I’ll stand by your side and hold your hand in the dark so things aren’t so scary.” I absolutely loved Griffin in this book. Luca suffers from crippling anxiety due to a past traumatic experience and can’t be in small places and large crowds. I loved how this book touched on anxiety issues especially since I suffer from anxiety as well. Griffin was so supportive and understanding and I loved the love he had for Luca. My heart broke for Luca as I read this story because she has been through so much in her short life. I admired her strength and courage in this story. I also loved how when Griffin came on to the scene that Luca was magically all better. Her journey and transformation was authentic and real which I appreciated. I have read many books written by Ward and Keeland and their stories just keep getting better and better. Name a better writing duo? I’ll wait! But on a serious note this story was flawlessly written as always. I love that you can’t tell who wrote which scenes. I have also read their solo books and to this day I can’t figure it out. This story features characters you can’t help but love, cheer, cry and root for while reading.

OMG! I just devoured this most beautiful sweet love story. I was smiling within the first 10 minutes and continued with a giddy feeling for the next 80% of the book. The dialogue was funny, believable and raw. I like when the characters are tender with each other while being true to themselves and there was plenty of that in this story. I felt the angst as Griffin and Luca worked through their own insecurities and absolutely loved the ending. The narration was perfection, especially for Griffin.

This is my 2nd book from these authors. In fact, I read this one after falling in love with “Hate Notes” and I’m about to pick up another one because these ladies know how to write dream love stories.

PS. I am a psychologist, and while I love stories that encourage and normalize therapy, I usually cringe at how the therapist/patient relationship is often portrayed as inappropriate with boundaries crossed left and right. While on the surface the therapeutic relationship between Doc and Luca may seem unrealistic and inappropriate, I did not feel it was, given the severity of Luca’s anxiety. I see 99% of my patients in office and have zero contact outside of our scheduled sessions. However, I have done home visits to patients unable to step outside their homes a handful of times in my 25+ years of practicing and I have attended a baseball championship game after my 17 y/o patient asked me to be there for support.

I really enjoyed this story! I’m a huge fan of pen pal books and they are so hard to come by. I was soooo excited to have across this one. From page one I was all in. Luca and Griffin were adorable. I really enjoyed their letters and friendship even after reconnecting after so many years. Life changed drastically for the both of them and even still they were able to write like no time had passed.

No longer the teenie boppers that they used to be, their letters turned very adult and quite interesting. Vibrating Furby keychain interesting. Not gonna lie, that was a bit cringe 🤣 Their chemistry was felt through the pages of letters that they exchanged and it’s only expected that they each wanted more than just letters. Luca was our mental health rep and she was not prepare to find out that Griffin’s world was her absolute worst nightmare. This story was well written and kept me engaged the whole time.

My only complaint was Luca. Mental health is real and I can’t judge anyone for how they handle their trauma, but it became exhausting after a while. Griffin did literally everything he possible could but Luca was just paralyzed by her fears. I get it. I do. But it’s frustrating to read about in a romance book 🤣 It just came off as her not caring enough to step outside of her comfort zone. She was too complacent for my liking. The last quarter of the book was all about her and her fears. Which I struggled with a bit.

Other than that, this book was really good. It definitely gave me my pen pal trip fix.

This was a case of a book that I judged by its cover/title and skipped over and over, even though it kept showing up in my ads. I’m not proud of that.
I don’t know what made me finally read/listen to it. But to tell you that I am glad that I did is a gross understatement. It altered my soul. I loved this story so much, but it was the character development and beautiful way it was written that pulled me in, scrambled my emotions, and spit me out (changed, satisfied, and with a smile on my face), only to suck me right back in again (yes, I re-listened IMMEDIATELY after finishing my first listen…I have only ever done that 3 times in my life).

Luca and Griffin were childhood pen pals, having started their letter writing in 2nd grade. Griffin lived in England and Luca was in the U.S., so they knew they would likely never meet in person. This gave them a sort of anonymity which lent itself to confessions and conversations they would never have shared with anyone else. Their correspondence led to a deeper connection that abruptly ended when they were 17, with no explanation from Luca. The story begins 8 years later, when Luca is still working through the aftermath of the event that pulled her away from her childhood friend, and Griffin has moved to the U.S., having achieved his dream and become a famous rockstar. Their relationship resumes when Luca goes to her dad’s old house after his death and discovers a new letter from Griffin, in which he vents his anger and frustration at having been ghosted by her 8 years ago. When she responds with an overdue explanation and apology, Griffin stole my heart when he wrote back. It was PERFECT; he threw his own words back at himself AND showed that he remembered something about Luca from when they were kids.

The story was filled with swoony gestures from Griffin, heartbreaking moments from Luca, and laughter as they fall right back into their friendship. I loved Luca’s sense of humor, despite her struggles. Griffin did so much planning so Luca can join him as he works; how could you not love him?! Then there is the relationship between Luca and her therapist, “Doc”, aka, her only friend in the world. The two of them together is heartwarming and perfect. It showed how hard she worked in her healing process, but also illustrated the type of person she is to befriend a quirky older gentleman.

Unfortunately, despite Griffin’s careful planning, things go wrong on their trip which makes Luca question whether she can realistically be in a relationship with him, and she pulls away. He respects her decision but still checks in with Doc to make sure she is ok and taken care of. Their lifestyle differences seem insurmountable, and the reader is left on pins and needles wondering how it will all play out.

Dirty Letters is so much more than a love story. It shows us that fear is temporary and that only regret will last forever, so we may as well take a leap of blind faith, live in the moment, and enjoy the ride. It teaches us the importance of giving yourself grace and accepting who you are during EACH step of your personal journey. It is a story that will stay a part of my heart for a very long time.

I had the absolute pleasure of listening to the audiobook version of this story and it was a work of art. It goes without saying, but Jacob Morgan narrating in a British accent is not something to be missed! Andi Arndt, as always, is pure perfection. Together, their dual narration highlights all of the heartbreaking emotions in each syllable and I cannot recommend it enough!!

This book was a delightful surprise! I love a good pen pal story, and this one was especially sweet. Luca is living my dream life: writing in Vermont 🍂, having a pet pig 🐖, and residing in a secluded small town 💕. Griffin is just perfection—he's sweet, funny, British 😍, and a rockstar with a heart of gold. I adore a main character with emotional intelligence! The narration was flawless, and the accent made this an incredibly immersive read.

I chose this 5 star rating because this book is deep. Its not your usual story. Theres depth and complexity not only to the story but to the characters as well. Having said that, I found the hero to be a bit idealic but oddly relatable. The book also deals with mental illness which I thought was refreshing. At the end of the book I needed to exhale and literally debrief myself. What a saga. Loved it. The characters were frank with their emotions, there wasn't any of the game playing, just straight forward adult communication. Do yourself a favour and read.

Best romance in a long time. Unusual the plot, and so well conceived all the story long. Both characters are special persons, exactly how we dream they should be in a love story. And all those travels throughout USA states, and Doc bird watching, another beautiful person we dream to have in our real leaves.
