Donkey Work (Feline Frolics Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 177 ratings

After cats there comes donkey… For cat lovers old and new – particularly those whose lives are ruled by feline fancy!

There is a new edition to Doreen’s animal family…

You would have thought that having two curious Siamese cats and a tortoise with wanderlust was enough to keep anyone on their toes.

Not so for Doreen and her husband Charles, who decide to take on a baby donkey to keep the nettles under control in the orchard.

When Annabel clip-clops into their lives they realise that, from the ear-splitting nocturnal howling to the numerous escape attempts, living with a donkey won’t be plain sailing…

DONKEY WORK continues Doreen Tovey’s memoirs about living with Siamese cats – and other animals: set in the British countryside, it is told with wit, mischief, and above all humour.

‘If you love cats, you'll enjoy every chapter of each book in this witty, warm-hearted collection’ -
Your Cat Magazine

‘Many a time I have laughed out loud at Doreen’s antics and looked forward to reading more about Mrs Binney and Father Adams’ -
Homes & Garden

‘No-one writes about cats with more wit, humour and affection than Doreen Tovey. Every word is a delight!’ - The People's Friend

‘a
highly amusing story of life with pets’ – Bookish Beck

‘Doreen has
a wonderful, warm, and witty way with words that bring the personality of each cat to life and perfectly describe her love of them.’ - Life With Siamese Cats

‘Every so often, there comes along a book — or if you’re lucky books — which
gladdens the heart, cheers the soul… Just such books are those written by Doreen Tovey’ – Cat World

A friend told me about this series and I ordered the first book ONLY "just in case." I WAS CAPTIVATED - by the story line, the author's charming writing style, and the added bonus of life in an English village earlier last century. I was smitten! I promptly ordered all her books, yes All. Have just enjoyed these so thoroughly as not only a cat lover, but an animal lover. She has such a unique way of translating cat behavior that is so, so true!!! Being an animal lover, she managed it with their donkey too ... and her take on human nature for the people in the village is wonderful. She sees humor in almost everything and it really shines through the stories, without demeaning the people or the animals. I suppose it is a sense of humor with love running through it, not sarcasm, so different than how things are approached today. These are totally UPLIFTING reads, highly entertaining if you are an animal lover.

Doreen Tovey's books have been a favourite with me for nearly forty years. She writes about her darling cats and donkey with such humour, I often laugh out loud. I never get sick of reading these books and have downloaded them to my Kindle so that I can keep on re-reading them and so has my daughter. We've all lost beloved pets and Doreen takes us through the highs and lows with such charm and wit that it is impossible to be sad for too long. Feel good books for all ages. (Especially if your neighbours think you are a bit barmy)

I have a donkey that I rescued and so this book was such a pleasure to read. Donkeys on the whole have a hard time as they are overloaded and abused so it is good to know that there are people out there with kind hearts. This book proves that donkeys are much smarter than people give them credit for. They do get themselves into difficult situations sometimes because they are so inquisitive and I can relate to the episode of where the donkey gets in a fix but has the sense to wait for help. One of the funniest parts is where the donkey collapses regularly at the same spot and has to be revived with whisky - and they call them stupid. A very refreshing read for adults and children alike. Light reading and highly recommended.

I would love to have known the author and her husband. I think we would have been great friends.

I have done the Siamese cat thing, best cat I ever had. Smartest one too. Had donkeys living next door, so I understood first hand much of what is happening.

This series of books is out and out hysterical.

Another lovely book by Doreen Tovey to add to my collection! I've so enjoyed all her books and this is no different. Her heart-warming tales of village life, her cats and her donkey brings her experiences to life and I've loved sharing them. I especially love Annabelle the donkey, Doreen's descriptions of her are just wonderful!!

I've got all the books by Doreen Tovey, convinced she is the best writer of all on the subject of (beloved, bewitching, bewildering) cats and pets. Such a loss to think that her books may not be available for much longer. Advice to the uninitiated: Be careful when you read her books in public. People might look at you very strangely when you're about to fall from your seat with silent laughter...

The whole Cats in the Belfry series is wonderful, I’ve just finished Donkey Work (third in the series) and I was laughing out loud again as I read it. Such a sweet and entertaining look at the lives of a crazy animal/cat couple, it’s an easy and comforting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life with a donkey
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 14, 2010
This is an amusing account of life with a donkey. Anyone who owns these lovely animals will appreciate the trials and tribulations of getting to know your donkey's character, so aptly described in this book. The Toveys certainly learnt not to underestimate the intelligence of these clever equines, whilst at the same time finding endless amusement with Annabelle, the little donkey who quietly crept in to a corner of their hearts.

Those thinking of getting a donkey (or two!) will hopefully not be put off, but more determined to understand their foibles and enjoy the fun of ownership and the love that will undoubtedly develop between you and your long-earned companions.
